Subject: Shatteredkit's Apprentice Ceremony Tue 26 Dec 2023 - 17:03
Where, oh where, had the time gone? It felt like just yesterday that her own kits had been born, now her second son had grandkits of his own, and those kits were ready to become apprentices in their own right. Shatteredkit had grown fast, and she was excited to get this ceremony started as she sat on a low-hanging branch that overlook their new camp. It was no true tallbranch replacement, but it would do.
"Let all... Cats old enough to climb a tree gather for a clan meeting!" Her summons was punctured by a cough, but her voice still rang out over Skyclan's camp.
An apple a day keeps anyone away if you throw it hard enough
Shatteredkit knew that it was time. He glanced at the nursery, where the rest of his siblings still stayed, and found himself nervous at the prospect of having to sleep alone tonight. He threw away that thought quickly. Brackenkit was sure to be an apprentice next, and Honeykit wouldn't be too far behind. It wouldn't be soon before their entire litter was in the apprentice's den... except for Harekit. His sickly brother didn't look any closer to getting better than the day he was born six moons ago. Shatteredkit quelled his nerves and joined the crowd, Brackenkit's words still echoing in his mind. He had to be strong, for all of them.

It took a moment to find the face she was looking for, and Wolfblossom smiled when she spotted Shatteredkit stepping from the nursery. He and his siblings had been born into quite the chaotic times, and while she still thought of Thornstalker, she was glad to see that her kits grew strong.
"Shatteredkit, step forward." There was a raspy quality to her voice from the coughing and congestion, but the warmth in her tone was clear as she continued. "You have reached the age of six moons-" She struggled to stifle another cough, and saying that her grandson was six moons old made her want to scream. And bundle them all right back into the nursery. "And it is time you become an apprentice. From now until you earn your warrior name, you will be known as Shatteredpaw." She had thought long about who would mentor Shatteredkit, and with less than a pawful of cats truly healthy, Wolfblossom worried that she would be pushing her warriors too hard. But training must go on, and the clan would survive this too. "Your mentor will be Mintglade. She's a skilled warrior, and I trust she can teach you all she knows."
Honeykit poked her head out of the nursery, roused by the sounds of the bustling clearing outside. Her attention was drawn to her littermate, Shatteredkit, who stood with Wolfblossom at the center of the clearing, surrounded by their clanmates. Honeykit was happy to see that there was just enough space for her to squeeze herself in between two older cats. She clambered out of the nursery and made her way between the two cats so she could have a better look at the ceremony.
Eyes wide, she observed the proceedings with a mixture of anticipation and awe. As Shatteredkit stepped forward, Honeykit knew what a special moment this was for him. Of course Shatteredkit would be the next one, she thought, he deserves it. Her heart swelled with love and pride for her brother.
Honeykit mewled her encouragement, not entirely sure if her voice reached her brother. As Wolfblossom gave him his new name - Shatteredpaw - the sight of her brother stepping into a new role within the clan filled her with a mixture of emotions. She felt a touch of excitement, tinged with a hint of the unfamiliar. She would miss his warmth in the nursery, his gentle teasing, and his confident air. The image of Shatteredpaw replacing Shatteredkit was a symbol of growth and the start of a new chapter in her brother's journey.
"Shatteredpaw!" she squeaked, as loud as her tiny voice could manage. From her spot in the crowd, it was impossible for her to tell if her brother had heard her call out his name, and she imagined it could have been drowned out by the powerful voices of the warriors around her. She drew in a deeper breath and yowled, "Shatteredpaw!" That's my brother, and he's amazing, she mused.
As Shatteredpaw's mentor, Mintglade, was named, Honeykit's wide, wondering eyes searched the clearing, waiting for the she-cat to step up and greet her new apprentice.

"I hope that we can meet again one day, you and I," she mewed, "under peaceful skies."
Brackenkit took his time leaving the nursery, not exactly sure why Shatteredkit had joined the others, until he realised they were 6 moons old today. The toms heart stopped, and suddenly he was dashing out of the nursery and joining shatteredkit, Honeykit in tow. ”So you think todays the day?” he meowed cocking his head. Before his siblings could reply though, Wolfblossom was calling Shatteredkit’s name. A wave emotion washed over Brackenkit partially jealously, partially excitement, but mostly pride. With a purr he shoved Shatteredkit forward into the clearing below Wolfblossom. ”Make mum proud Shatteredpaw,” he purred joining in with Honeykit as she chanted their brother’s new name.
Harekit watched from the edge of the medicine den. He grew in size but ageing didn't seem to quell his illness in the slightest. So there he sat watching his siblings get their apprentice names while he was left behind. He was happy for them but at the same time he hated being left behind. All of his siblings would be getting their name after Shatteredkit, he just knew it. The gold tom didn't join in the joyful cheers like the rest of his siblings, he gave a simple nod before settling down in front of the medicine den. It was going to be a long and hard evening.
Mintglade had been doing better than she had been sunrises ago, and for that, she thanked Starclan. Or, well, she more accurately thanked Smokepetal. The herbs weren't helping her get back to full capacity, but she certainly was now well enough to actually do some of her duties. As such, she had found herself at the edge of the ceremony, and when her name was called... the grief that had panged in her chest at the loss of her last apprentice lessened. Lifting her head high and fighting back a cough, she dipped her head before going to her apprentice. "I'd touch noses, but I don't think you want this nasty bug I've been fighting. So, I look forward to training you, Shatteredpaw!" Her voice lightened with every word, the joy creeping further into her demeanor.
An apple a day keeps anyone away if you throw it hard enough
Shatteredpaw spared a glance for his siblings before searching for Mintglade. Their confidence in him was worth more than anything he had, and he could only dip his head in thanks. "I will," He promised Brackenkit, then turned to confidently stride up to his new mentor. He had never met the energetic she-cat before, and he found himself slightly put off by how upbeat she seemed, but figured that as long as she did her job well there would be no problem. "I look forward to training," he mewed simply.
