Welcome to the third Duties & Patrols for 2024! The rules are simple: post in a posting order, do your duties well, report any problems encountered during the patrol to a leader or deputy, and enjoy! You can’t fix the past, but you can change the future.
Daisyfang was still sick, the small cough seeming to have claimed the she-cat and kept her in the medicine cat den for days at a time, emerging only to fetch water and food. Sootstorm had taken over most of her duties, even though he knew very little about any herbs. He asked Daisyfang for advice whenever she was clear-headed enough, and relied on his memory from the brief period during which he had helped Sparrowthorn gather herbs in an attempt to cure Ferntwist and their kits. The herb storage was dwindling, something that occured to him only when his paws scraped bare stone when fetching another bundle of goldenrod for an apprentice's wounds. Embarrassment burned in him as he led the last-minute herb patrol out in search of several herbs that he had noticed too late were almost completely gone. He turned to his patrolmates, trying to seem certain about himself. "Okay, split up and call me over if you find anything you think may be a herb. Don't try touching anything; you never know what may be deadly," He instructed, secretly hoping that if they ever found poison, he'd be able to recognise it.

Sadness pooled in Cloudypetal's eyes when she realized what this patrol truly was about.. Herb hunting. Daisyfang wasn't looking good, at all. It shattered her heart to see her friend look so awful - and Sootstorm looked so exhausted he could collapse. It had happened almost as soon as they came back to their moorland. She had a pit of guilt weighing heavily in her stomach, having avoided the sick medicine cat out of fear of also falling ill. Sometimes she wondered if their homeland was truly cursed, but she'd never speak those words around the deputy. Maybe I'm just feeling negative - Daisyfang is going to be okay, she thought, trying to reassure herself. This is home.
She dipped her head in acknowledgment, wordlessly splitting from the group. She knew what she was looking for - she had done this with Daisyfang before. She sniffed along the clearing, trying to smell something somewhat familiar after her long stints in the medicine den as an apprentice.
Cloudypetal rolled a 1+2 because we're at the Lone Stump and found... Cobwebs!
She could recognize the dusty scent of cobwebs anywhere. They're not in the best shape, but they could use anything at this point. She grabbed a stick and carefully collected the fragile strands before returning to her patrol.

Oatpaw frowned as he followed behind warrior and deputy. His tail was uncharacteristically low, swinging back and forth as he thought of Daisyfang, barely conscious in her sickness. The fever that plagued her worried him. Nobody knew as much about herbs as she did, especially not him - he'd been by the medicine den all of once in his entire life, and he'd been all but scruffed and dragged inside to take the herbs she offered. StarClan knew what they were. Gross, he thought bitterly. All I know is that they were gross and they sucked.
It was hard for him to not be able to help. It was something he'd grappled with even when he was sick. Not being able to help his Clan was so frustrating. It was why he'd volunteered for this patrol - if there was anything he could do, he would do it. Even if he didn't know feverfew from yarrow. He split off from the group with pinned back ears, scouring the soil beneath his paws for anything that looked even remotely like an herb.
There. Red berries! They stuck out on the white, snowy moor, shiny and small in the dampened leafbare grass. Spiky leaves surrounded the small, hard berries, but Oatpaw picked a few off carefully, forgetting Sootstorm's earlier words. He padded back toward the patrol, careful not to puncture the berries with his teeth as he held them gently in his maw. He looked for his Clanmates, presenting his find with eager eyes and twitching tail, hoping he'd found something useful. "Thootthorm!" Oatpaw called, but his words were muffled. He growled softly, dropping the berries at his paws and trying again. "Sootstorm! I found something!"
Oatpaw rolled a 1 and found...holly berries! (Opting not to use the bonus)

Sootstorm nodded in approval as Cloudypetal returned with a stick full of cobwebs, knowing that though they had yet to run out of it they'd need it eventually, and it was always better to keep a large stock of such things just in case there was a large battle. He looked up as Oatpaw came padding up to him with red berries he had never seen before clamped in his jaws. Oh Stars, he hoped whatever those berries where, they weren't poisoneous. He vaguely recalled Batsong ever mentioned red berries, but couldn't remember what they were called, and most certianly did not remember what they were supposed to heal-- or damage. Sootstorm tried not to let his panic show on his face while he gave the berries an experimental sniff. "Let's leave them here for now, and uh, Cloudypetal, could you fetch some grass to wrap these with?" He asked the she-cat, then turned to Oatpaw with a veru serious expression. "Oatpaw," He began, nudging a pawful of snow the tom's way, "Please stuff as much of this snow as you can into your mouth then spit it out." Was that the way poison was removed? Probably not, but Stars, he had to try something.
