The moon has finished chasing the sun away, and though it didn't banish the dreadful Greenleaf heat, hunting conditions are perfect for the night.

Briarpaw had been eager to go on the hunting patrol, trotting alongside aunt Lilyvalley as the patrol left camp. She was less familiar with the rest of the cats on the patrol, but she was sure she'd get to know them in time.
"It's so warm out... At least the night is cooler than the daytime. Makes you feel bad for the other clans not being smart enough to hunt like we do, really." Briarpaw mewed absently, green eyes scanning the marsh for signs of prey. The night was still warmer than what she was used to, but it wasn't overwhelmingly uncomfortable with her short fur at least. Hopefully that meant the prey would be up and about as well.

LILYVALLEY
If we did what was easy
Lilyvalley chuckled as she walked beside her niece. "Not all prey is active during the night. The Clans hunt according to what better suits their territory. I bet SkyClan cats wonder why we don't all hunt in the trees, or RiverClan wonders why we don't swim as much. It is just what works best for us." Stars, if she had a squirrel for everytime a cat questioned the actions of the other Clans, or simply considered them weird, she would be fed for life. Then again, she supposed at one point she would have thought them odd, too.
Speaking of squirrel, Lilyvalley just so happened to spot one. The rodents were not as common on ShadowClan territory as they were in ThunderClan, so seeing the bushy tail brought a smile to her face as she began to creep forward.
She was reminded of how inept ShadowClan, and her especially, was at catching those critters, as it hurried up the tree, chittering at her from one of the tall branches.

I feel like I’m waiting for something that’ll never happen
Quillsplash trotted behind Briarpaw and Lilyvalley, ears flicking as the two she-cats spoke. On one paw, Briarpaw was reciting what Quillsplash could've sworn every other apprentice had said before, and on the other paw Lilyvalley spoke as if she had been alive since the Fourtrees were acorns. He... still didn't trust the tortoiseshell she-cat much, and if not for the other members of the patrol, he'd be worried this was another attempt by Sablestrike for his life.
The tortoiseshell shook his head, as if to clear his thoughts. The heat must be getting to him. Stars knows why he had to be born with fur thick enough to make him feel hot in Leafbare. Huffing, the warrior's gaze scanned the forest, hoping to find a prey or two in the shadows. Though he wouldn't blame them if they were hiding in their burrows somewhere... he wished to be back in his nest too.
And, sure enough, there wasn't a single prey-scent to be found. Quillsplash sighed and looked around the patrol, not surprised to find that nothing else had been caught either. Sometimes he really wished ShadowClan didn't hunt in the middle of the night...

Stars, he’d forgotten how irritating Lilyvalley’s voice could be. Even if Nettleweaver’s anger these days was less guided toward her, he still despised her. He looked to Quillsplash, who seemed slightly irritated by the conversation, which made him smile smugly. His friend was discreet, but he was glad they shared the same disdain. He watched in mild amusement as the she-cat let the squirrel go, it really hadn’t climbed that high up. “Maybe we should try and be like the other clans, they’re all skilled at their own things if we-“ he attempted to leap up into the branches only for a raccoon to smash into him.
Nettleweaver growled, scurrying back from the creature before it could attempt to actually hurt him. He lunged forward, grabbing the raccoon by the scruff and hauling it towards him. Blood filled his mouth, and he bit down harder. If he was going to look like a fool while hunting, he would at least look competent in combat.

Nettleweaver huffed, placing a large unsheathed paw on its neck to hold it down as he readjusted his position. With a sharp jerk and a loud snap! The raccoon stilled. He released it, taking in a deep breath to appear a little more composed than the rapid beating of his own heart let on.
Nettleweaver used bite and hold but not rolling bc raccoon takes the L regardless
He took another breath, eyes scanning for any more danger, before stepping over the fallen mammal. “As I was saying, if we train at what they’re good at they won’t be so skilled and we’ll have an edge on them. See, ThunderClanner’s are strong and big and I fought like one of them and now there’s one less predator in the forest. And if we don’t go to war, then we have something to bond over.” mewed Nettleweaver with a cocky smile “After all, imitation is the highest form of flattery.”

Briarpaw didn't have much time to consider her aunt's answer, as she had veered off to attempt catching prey... And then a raccoon had decided to charge Nettleweaver. She wasn't sure she agreed with what he'd been saying about trying to be like the other clans - Shadowclan was unique, Shadowclan was better than the others. But all thoughts fled as the scent of blood filled the air.
Briarpaw instinctively darted forward, ready to help, but it seemed the warrior had the situation well in hand, the raccoon quickly falling under his claws and fangs. "Dumb beasts... You'd think we'd rid the forest of them with how many I've run into with Larkshine." Briarpaw huffed out, turning away. With the raccoon gone, maybe they'd have better luck searching for prey.
