Subject: Escape Attempt [c] Sat 1 Jun 2024 - 22:36
Crouched in the semidarkness with the roar of the Twoleg monster echoing in their ears, each cat began to realize that they were rapidly accelerating. An unpleasant metallic tang filled the air, clouding their heads. To make matters worse, with every sudden stop or turn they made, their cages shifted, making it even more difficult for them to orient themselves. Panicking would be all too easy in this strange and overwhelming place. However, as each cat felt their homeland quickly growing further and further away, it became clear that time was of the essence. All moving things eventually stopped– the monster couldn't run forever. This was a time for quick decisions. When the monster did stop, would they greet whatever creature met them on its terms, or their own?
Briefly scanning the inside of the monster's belly, each cat was aware that there were four total cages, each made out of the same thin metal mesh material that only the smallest of cats could barely fit a paw through. The cage walls felt dismayingly solid, and while the cage door had slightly more give, it was obvious that pushing it open would require a great deal of strength. Each identical cage was held shut by a latch on the outside that had to be both turned and slid to open– an exceedingly difficult task in broad daylight, let alone in a constantly shifting, semi-dark environment.
Dice Rules: –No more than one dice roll/post –To keep things organized after everyone has posted 1x, I will post to update stats/escape statuses, and then everyone can post again, and so on. –There is a time limit, each cat only gets 3 dice rolls! –Cages can be opened in two different ways:
1. Opening the latch: Batting at the latch from just the right angle can open the door. Requires focus and teamwork. When there's only one cat in a given cage:
Spoiler:
To open your own cage, you must roll a 1 or a 2.
When one cat is helping another to escape their cage, both RPers must roll the dice. For a successful escape, only one of them needs to roll either a 1, 2, or 3.
The more helpers, the more numbers are added on/the greater the odds (Two cats working outside with one cat inside the cage need a 1, 2, 3, or 4 for an escape).
Risk!! For every failed escape attempt, deduct 1 EP from every cat trying to aid the escape both inside and outside the cage.
Opening the latches on shared cages (Elm and Cardinal):
Spoiler:
Sharing cages makes it harder to work. For Elm and Cardinal:
Only a 1 will set them free unless every other cat in the van is working together to save them, in which case a 1 or a 6 will.
Only one of the two trapped cats needs to roll a 1 for both to escape.
Risk!! For every failed escape attempt, deduct 2 EP from each cat inside the cage, and 1 EP from each cat helping on the outside
2. Bending the bars: With enough pressure, the thin wire mesh doors can be bent, allowing the latch to slide open on its own. Requires strength and perseverance. When there's only one cat in a given cage:
Spoiler:
Apprentices must roll a 2.
Warriors and ½ feral apprentices must roll either a 2 or a 1.
Strong guy Wiggleworm can roll a 1, 2, or 6.
Risk!! For every failed escape attempt, deduct 5 HP.
Bending the bars on shared cages (Elm and Cardinal):
Spoiler:
The cramped space makes it nearly impossible to gain enough momentum or force to bend the wire from the inside of the cage. Both characters must roll a 3 or a 4 in the same round to escape this way.
Risk!! For every failed escape attempt, deduct 5 HP.
Natural Instinct +1 to all Hunting rolls regardless of location, clan and prey.

The monster rumbled to life beneath Wiggleworm, and his claws slid out, scraping against the smooth floor of his trap with a screech. Fear-scent permeated the air around him and he trembled slightly, pupils blown wide. It was dark in the belly of the monster, but his eyes slowly adjusted to the dim lighting. After several long seconds, the beast lurched and he tipped to the side, flank hitting the solid side of his box with a painful thump. It rumbled and Wiggleworm looked around nervously as if he could feel them getting further from home.
Wiggleworm could barely smell through the thick, foul scent of the monster, but even so, he could tell that Bearpaw's box was just below his. Careful to keep his voice from shaking, he dipped his muzzle closer to the metal mesh at the front of his box. "Bearpaw?" He asked, uncertain. "Are you okay? Don't worry - I'll get us out of here. I'll get us home." Though, even as he said it, the severity of the situation weighed down on him like a stone in his chest. Could he get them out? Let alone home? Was that nothing but an empty promise?
Terror settled in the warrior's bones as he shifted in his box, tail twitching. The sides were pressing in around him, restricting his movement and rendering him completely unable to turn or even look around. Claustrophobia closed in around him, fogging his head with fear, and the spotted feral closed his eyes. He had to think. Just looking, he could tell that he wouldn't be able to fit a paw through the small mesh on the front of his box. The sides of his box were solid and nearly impossible to even see from his cramped position, so Wiggleworm focused on the front.
Maybe he could break it somehow? It didn't look particularly strong...he could try to bend it or something...maybe. With a grunt, Wiggleworm scooted forward in the box and pressed his forepaws into the mesh and, bracing his hind legs against the back of the box, strained to pull the thin, metal sticks apart. The mesh bent after several seconds of labor and Wiggleworm panted, paws sore from the effort. He kept going, though, determined, and finally made a large enough gap to squeeze through. These twolegs may have caught him and Bearpaw, but they wouldn't keep them. Or the other cats, if he could help it.

His vision soon adjusted, revealing the faces of fellow prey. After a moment Hornetpaw realized they hadn't been eaten. Yet, at least. What kind of monster was this? He fell against one side of his cage due to sudden movement. It was carrying them! To where, exactly, he feared most. The apprentice had little room to stand, so he was crouched over while trying his best not to shake too hard. He'd never been so constrained like this, except maybe when pinned in combat. But this was nothing like combat. The smell of tuna at the back of the cage taunted him. I'm so dumb, he wanted to sob, burying his face in his paws. I fell for that trap so easily. Sunfire would never be proud of such an idiot.
Hornetpaw's eyes blinked wide open. Is this what happened to him? The tom tried to stand but only hit his back against the ceiling. Ouch... He shook out his fur, some loose tufts snagging on the bars. Okay. It's time to take control of yourself and get out of here. That's what Sunfire would do. Hornetpaw pressed his paws against the mesh, hooking his claws through the spaces. He was strong, born of blazing Skyclan blood and bigger than many of his littermates, but not nearly as big or strong as his mother or father. Nonetheless, he would grit his teeth and try to escape with all his might.
It was hard to move. It was hard to see. It was hard to breathe.
Elmstorm was pushed up right against the wall of this tiny container, in complete darkness, the sound and smell of the other cats around him. He could see the forms of the other cats in their own cages, and maybe he was a little jealous that they at least had more space than him.
He glanced over to the ShadowClan apprentice beside him. He would have thought with her size there would at least be a little more space, but this cage was already small as it was.
Then he saw a figure moving in the darkness.
One of the others had escaped! How had he managed that?
Elmstorm reached a paw through the gaps of the cage, trying desperately to nudge at the latch. He could just barely manage to wiggle it, but the cage still wouldn't open.
"Hey! Can you help us? I can't get this thing open."
Hopefully the cat on the outside wouldn't just leave them.
If this apprentice could just move over maybe he could actually do something with this latch, too.
"a castle with thorns so that they can never come near."

The light had turned into darkness faster than Cardinalpaw had been able to process, and suddenly she was smashed between a cold, dark wall and the warm body of another cat. Her fur instinctively stood on end. It was as if everything that could possibly go wrong had just happened all in one swoop, and the worst part of it all was that she was forced to share her new cell with a cat from another Clan.
She had no intentions of befriending anyone, but if getting out of here alive meant that every cat would have to escape along with her, then she supposed she'd have to suck it up and deal with it. That didn't mean that she was going to let this unknown tom keep her shoved to the side, though.
"Can you not stink up the whole place? I can't help if you don't move your ungroomed rear." Cardinalpaw spat before forcing a paw forward and attempting to grasp at the latch. She was unfamiliar with twoleg contraptions, and her swatting didn't do much to fix their predicament.

Bearpaw's heart pounded in her chest as the monster roared to life around her. A dreadful sinking feeling rushed over her like a tidal wave, settling in her belly. They were truly trapped. That's what she thought, at least– until her uncle managed to break his cage open. Maybe there was hope! She batted at her enclosure's latch with renewed vigor, trying to hook it with her claws. After a few tense moments of effort, the half-feral molly managed to wiggle it enough to open her door. She leaped out of her cage as soon as the door burst open, eager to have breathing room. Bearpaw had no idea what to do. She studied Wiggleworm's face, looking for direction. "Should we... help them? Or just leave?" She mewed in Feral. The thought of abandoning the others didn't feel right, but they had their own survival to worry about.

The monster's roars grew louder, and the cages lurched toward the back of the enclosure. Even in their ever-shifting environment, it was clear to every cat in the party that they were picking up speed. The realization was terrifying. They knew that their home grew farther and farther away with every moment they spent trapped in their cages. Two attempts remaining.
Wiggleworm and Bearpaw have escaped their cages! Elmstorm and Cardinalpaw have failed to open the latch on their cage: -2EP each Hornetpaw has failed to bend the bars on his cage: -5 HP
Wiggleworm stumbled as he squeezed free from the metal trap, his heart beating like a frantic bird in his chest. The monster jostled beneath him as he moved into the open and the massive warrior had to pause to regain his bearings before finally, he started towards Bearpaw's cage, intent on helping her. However, she hardly seemed to need it and, with minimal effort, somehow managed to unlatch the door to her cage. That would certainly make things easier. With a purr, Wiggleworm touched his nose to his niece's in what he hoped was a comforting gesture. Her question gave him pause, though, and he frowned "We can't abandon them. It wouldn't be right."
It was tempting - the chance to escape now - but he couldn't bring himself to leave the other cats behind. With a flick of his tail, he gestured to the contraption Elmstorm and Cardinalpaw were sharing. "It'll be difficult to get them out, so let's try the SkyClanner's cage first." With that, the spotted tom picked his way across the enclosed space until he was in front of Hornetpaw. "We are here to help. Do not worry." It was easier said than done, but he had to try to soothe the young apprentice somehow. Then, to the other two cats, "One moment!"
The RiverClanner and ShadowClanner just needed to be patient until he and Bearpaw freed the SkyClanner. The latch didn't look so impossible from the outside, thankfully, and Wiggleworm settled in front of the cage, brown eyes narrowed in concentration. It was good that Bearpaw was free and could help but he was certain they would run out of time eventually. Even monsters had to rest. If they couldn't free the others, something bad would happen - he was sure of it. "Help me, SkyClanner!" Ears pinned back to block out the noise rumbling around them, Wiggleworm lifted a paw and hooked his claws around the latch. He fiddled with it for several moments alongside the tom until, with a soft snap, it slid to the side and the door popped open.

His paws weren't nearly effective enough, now only sore and slightly cut up. The tom then tried with his teeth which only succeeded in almost tearing out a fang. If brute force couldn't get him out, then what could!? Hornetpaw finally turned his attention to the cats outside his cage. Woah! Two of them had already escaped. He first noticed the huge warrior with strong muscles, thick limbs, and weirdly small ears. Behind him was a similar-looking apprentice, except she wasn't nearly as intimidating as the first. Hornetpaw immediately felt wary of their strange looks, and only became more nervous as the massive tom started walking directly toward him. The Skyclan apprentice pressed himself into the back of his cage while staring at Wiggleworm, who uttered, "We are here to help. Do not worry." Despite his words, Hornetpaw became tense since he could smell Thunderclan on him. He truly would be dumb if he ever thought to trust a Thunderclanner. So he stayed silent and still while anxiously watching Wiggleworm begin to pick at his cage's lock, and nearly jumped when the stranger snapped at him. Hornetpaw scowled but began fiddling with the latch as well. Whether he trusted them or not, he wanted- no, needed to be free.
His ears perked at the snapping indication the door was open and gave way as he dashed out. Even though he was out of the cage he knew he was not quite free, still having to keep his balance as the ground rumbled and lurched beneath him in the dark room. Fear gripped him. He was unsure what to do next, but couldn't help but pay attention to the other two cats still confined. It was clear the warrior who freed him intended to do the same for them. Despite the race against time to find an escape, or the voice of Sunfire in his head yelling to leave all of them for crowfood, Hornetpaw couldn't help but think about what he could do to help.
