An apple a day keeps anyone away if you throw it hard enough
Shatteredsky was beginning to think that Brackenpaw might never return, and much to his surprise, he didn't seem affected. He could see the loss of his brother reflected on his clanmates' face; the hopeful gazes that watched each tremble of every bush, raised only to fall in disappointment each time. The half-cry that laced his family's voices when they spoke, the tremble of their bodies at night. He wondered what it was that kept them up at night. Was it the howl of wolves? Did Brackenpaw's voice resurface each time? What was it that haunted their mind every heartbeat of their day. And why couldn't he feel it?
He had guessed from his clanmates that when someone was left out of something, they'd be plagued by loniless and sadness, but those emotions too were not given to him. For the first time, he was questioning the "calmness" that was his; he had been told that he was logical and level-headed, that he didn't let emotion cloud his judgement. Surely, those were all desirable? Then why did he feel rage boil in him each time he saw someone smile? Did that even count as rage? Or was it just something that he was taught?
Shatteredsky shook his head to clear his thoughts, tail twitching with irritation as he crept through the undergrowth. They had taken a small strip of forest as a place to settle down for a day or two, and he had been instructed to hunt. Hunger was something that he had known since birth, but each time he saw the pain twist Honeypaw's face, something in him told him that he should be hunting. Because he was her brother, it was only right that he take care of her. Because he loved her...
...right?
Shatteredsky broke through his doubt with a furious hiss, and he bounded deeper into the forest, running across unknown land in his search for prey. Just get this over with! He burst out of a clump of ferns to spot a squirrel, and he barreled into it rather than pounce. He landed roughly on it, claws holding it down as he regained his composure. The creature thrashed beneath him, and for a heartbeat, he wondered if it was feeling fear or pain. Did it have a family too?
Whatever. His fangs sank into it's neck, silencing it's cry.

Stoatclaw knew it was a terrible thought, but he truly didn't feel a thing for those that had gone missing or suffered injuries from the most recent attack. Being detached from his clan for so long had left him with no inclination to feel empathy for his fellow clanmates, though the fact that many of them were monsters had certainly aided that lack of feeling. Still, he needed to hunt for them. That wouldn't change. Perhaps he'd be able to keep the prey he caught today for his mate, no one else. It was a nice thought, but the moment he marched back into camp with a mouthful of prey it would be forfeited to those prowling the camp. It was a given at this point.
Tossing a glance at his patrol mate the tom stalked off in a different direction. Shatteredsky seemed to have a lot on his mind, and he didn't really feel like bothering the tom lest he get snapped at for ruining some mental focus or whatever. White paws melded with snow as the tom crept through the snow scape, hints of red filling his vision before long. Wings spread, though the avian stood in place merely shaking itself as he crept closer and closer until- Gotcha! Claws wrapped around the bird's wings, tearing through the feathered hide with ease and earning a pained squawk. A swift bite quelled the sounds of struggle.
It wasn't his cleanest kill, but it would fill a warrior all the same. Hoisting the catch in his jaws Stoatclaw padded toward where he had left his clanmate until the marbled tom came into sight.
Foxtrot's steps were weighed down with guilt as they trudged through the snowy forest, the scent of wolves seemingly lingering on their pelts. The recent encounter had still left them all shaken, but Foxtrot's thoughts were consumed by worry for his missing apprentice as he joined Shatteredsky's patrol. Brackenpaw's absence was impossible to ignore, a constant reminder of his responsibilities as a mentor.
Foxtrot couldn't shake this nagging feeling that he had failed the young Brackenpaw. Ever since his neck injury from the foxes moons ago, he had taken much more time to heal than expected, leaving him unable to train his apprentice as he should have. He couldn't help but think that if only he was more present, more attentive, Brackenpaw would be with them now.
The worst part was there was no closure. Was Brackenpaw alive, injured or worse, lost to them forever? The glimmer of hope that Brackenpaw had found someone from another clan to shelter with, was overshadowed by the fear of the unknown.
Foxtrot's green eyes narrowed with focus as he stalked forward, the scent of prey was near, and his senses were attuned to the slightest movement. With practiced paws, Foxtrot crept closer to his target - a small plump bird perched atop a lower branch, its feathers ruffling in the soft breeze.
Muscles tensed, in one swift motion Foxtrot pounced, his claws extending to snatch the bird from the branch. The sudden movement of his leap startled the bird, but it was far too late. Foxtrot closed his claws around the bird, closing the distance, and secured his prize.
As he held the struggling bird in his grasp, a sense of satisfaction washed over him. Despite the worry and guilt that weighed on him, the success of the hunt offered a brief respite. With the catch in his jaws, Foxtrot turned to make his way back to the other two members of the hunting party.
As he met the gaze of Shatteredsky he hesitated to say his piece. The tom had never apologized or admitting to making a mistake once in his life. But here he was in front of the brother to his apprentice and he felt compelled to say something.
"Shatteredsky," Foxtrot's voice was heavy and thick with regret, barely audible over the whipping winter wind, "I didn' do right by Brackenpaw. If only was a betta' mentor...maybe he woulda been here with us now." His eyes didn't waver from the other tom's face, and he didn't dare shrink away from whatever response he was given. Foxtrot could understand if Shatteredsky wanted to hurt him, punish him, blame him like he blamed himself. It's what he would've done if Thymelight - his niece - were in Brackenpaw's position. "He'll find his way back to us," Foxtrot's voice was firm. He knew how resilient and determined the kid was, he had no doubt in his mind he would return.

He hadn't realized that his patrolmates had approached him until Foxtrot began speaking. Shatteredsky blinked blankly at the black tom as he spoke. He had never once added the warrior to the equation, having always blamed Brackenpaw's disappearance on his brother's own stupidity. Clearly, Foxtrot was feeling some kind of guilt for Brackenpaw's disappearance. That's right, Foxtrot was Brackenpaw's mentor. How odd that Shatteredsky would have no recollection of the older warrior other than at his brother's ceremony. Maybe Foxtrot really had been a horrible mentor. The tabby felt his tail twitch with irritation at the phrase that seemed to have been repeated to him by every other cat he met. "Maybe he won't," He snapped back, then froze in his spot. He had just said that, hadn't he? Hopefully Foxtrot would just assume that it came from a place of grief, and not wishfulness.

Foxtrot’s experience as a loner on the streets of the city as a kit had molded him into the sharp, witty, resilient warrior he was today. Steeled green eyes narrowed as he processed Shatteredsky’s response. He hadn’t met a cat who was as direct with him besides Beechfang, and while he appreciated the directness, he didn’t want to let the response go.
Yet, he hesitated to say something, uncertain of how to bridge this divide between them. The last thing he wanted was an enemy in his own clan, it seemed like anything he would say next would certainly drive a wedge deeper between them. His experience had taught him to trust his instincts, and right now, his instincts were telling him to tread carefully around Shatteredsky and his volatile emotions.
With a silent nod of understanding, Foxtrot made a mental note to keep an eye on Shatteredsky, either to offer support or otherwise. He knew he was right. That was clanlife for ya. WHere Starclan gave with one paw and took away with the other. And for fun they’d take some more just for kicks. He knew Shatteredsky was right. Brackenpaw may never return, and it wouldn’t be the first time Foxtrot had lost an apprentice to the dangers of the world.
In the meantime, he picked up his catch, nodded to Stoatclaw, and turned to head back to the rest of SKyClan.

Stoatclaw was surprised to see Foxtrot approach Shatteredsky. Their interaction was brief and impossible to hear, but judging by the expressions the two held their conversation wasn't a pleasant one. It had elicited such a strong, perhaps curt response from Shatteredsky that had driven off Foxtrot. The nod that was tossed his way left the tom staring slack-jawed at his fellow warrior as he padded off in the direction of camp. That was it? Put Shatteredsky in a bad mood and leave him to pick up the pieces? No, absolutely not! It wasn't his duty to keep his clanmates happy! Shuffling his paws in the snow awkwardly Stoatclaw stared at the marbled tom. Would he lash out and do something now that Foxtrot was leaving?
