The hard packed snow stung her paws as Skyclan kept on with the journey over the mountains, and it had been difficult to say the least. Today there would be cause for lifted spirits, for a bit of celebration as one of their kits became an apprentice. For all the hardship her clan faced, Wolfblossom never grew tired of these ceremonies and they still brought a smile to her face even as age mourned for recently fallen clanmates.

"Let all Skyclanners old enough to climb a tree gather before me for a clan meeting!"

Cricketkit settled herself on the edge of the gathering crowd, glancing at anyone who sat too close with unveiled suspicion. Nowhere felt safe with Paledove gone. She wrapped her fluffy tail around her paws, trying to ward off the chill. The clan was always moving, pushing forward towards some new unknown, and the world felt entirely too big for the tabby and white she-cat. Everyday she wished desperately that Mother was still around to nudge her in the right direction. But Mother was gone, and her world was a cold and sinister place. She might as well pay attention, be prepared for whatever happened next, and try to survive. Information was useful, so she tried to direct her attention to Wolfblossom, but things kept moving in her periphery. It made her uneasy. The close press of so many cats, even her clanmates, put her on edge. Ears slicking back, she slunk a tail-length farther from the crowd to a more defensive position. She had more escape routes here.

It took her a moment to find Cricketkit among the crowd, and Wolfblossom tried to offer her a reassuring smile. She and so many had been born into absolute chaos, and she'd lost her mother too. It seemed she wasn't fond of the growing crowd of cats, or perhaps it was simply a culmination of all of the stress in her short life. Pushing the thoughts from her mind, Wolfblossom spoke. "Cricketkit, step forward please." She had found the warrior she was looking for in the crowd as well. "You've reached the age of six moons, and it is time you become an apprentice. From now until you earn your warrior name, you will be known as Cricketpaw. Your mentor will be Stoatclaw." The warrior was a kind tom, and more skilled than he gave himself credit for. Wolfblossom hoped that he would train her well.

Wolfblossom who was fairly trustworthy in Cricketkit’s mind, called her forward. The fluffy she-cat slowly rose from her seated position. The eyes of all her clanmates made her pelt prickle. She couldn’t show weakness, they’d just pick it apart, use it against her later. She stepped towards the front. Wolfblossom wouldn’t let anything happen to her, right? Surely if anyone tried to take a strike at her here, the massive deputy would defend her.

Unless they were sneaky about it, and tried to humiliate her in front of most of SkyClan. What if someone tried to trip her, or stepped on her tail? They would expose her for what she was, weak. And then the whole clan might turn against her. She couldn’t let their first real opinions of her be spoiled. She lifted her ears off her skull and lifted her chin. There. She was strong, and confident, and brave, and there were so many eyes focused on her. Cricketkit wanted to turn around and run. But there was nowhere to go. Her mother was dead and the nursery was no longer her home. She wanted to find Ospreykit and collapse into a trembling pile of nerves in her sister’s shadow. But she had to make Mother proud. She had to be useful in the eyes of her littermates. She had to survive. No SkyClanner cried.

The white and tabby molly wrapped her tail around her back legs so no one would trip her, and looked up to face the tom that appeared from the crowd. Her strange mis-matched eyes were a mirror of Paledove’s as they narrowed slightly in suspicion. She had to be smart. She had to win the favor of her mentor so maybe he would feel too guilty to try and hurt her when they trained. She had to make a good first impression. Stoatclaw. Rember the name, remember the face. Remember the way he moves and the way his paws sound agasint the snow. Paledove wasn't here to protect her anymore. So she had to remember, be ready for betrayal, and survive.

Stoatclaw was shocked to hear himself being appointed as Cricketpaw's mentor, especially since he had been so absent during Lightningbreeze's training, but this was perfect. Wasn't it? While he had never truly wanted to join Shadowclan there had always been a sliver of hope that he'd be free from the scarred beasts that inhabited Skyclan, but if he was to continue living here, and hopefully making a family of his own, then it was only natural that he at least try to get to know some of his clanmates better. Cricketpaw would be his new start to life in Skyclan. Giving his mate one last nuzzle before rising, the tom padded forward to touch noses with she-cat. He could see the suspicion in her eyes, so blatant, yet even if it hadn't been he would have known. After all, he had felt that same way for moons. He could tell from a mile away. "We'll start training tomorrow. Rest up, you'll need your strength." The tom spoke in a gentle tone, trying his best to sound as harmless as possible. Of course he knew that would do little if anything to ease her mind, but it was a start.

Honeypaw

As the cheers died down, Honeypaw made her way through the crowd to stand by the newly-named Cricketpaw. "Congratulations," she purred, sliding her fluffy tail down the apprentice's back in a comforting gesture. "I just know you're going to be amazing, Cricketpaw," she told her. "Ever since the first day I met you in the nursery I knew it." Honeypaw's blue eyes shone proudly as she watched her young friend's reaction. "And we're denmates now! That means we can really train together, isn't that exciting?" Honeypaw's paws tip-tapped in place, as though she could barely contain her energy. "C'mon, I'll help you find some decent pine needles to make a nest from, over here!" And without waiting for a reply, Honeypaw turned tail and bounced away in the direction of some cedar trees.

Cricketpaw dipped her head to her mentor, trying to ease the rapid beating of her heart. She would need her strength. Why? What did that mean? Did her mentor already have plans to test her? She would survive. She would melt into the shape her mentor wanted, she would be useful to him, make him proud. She wouldn’t let him hurt her. He could hurt her so easily. Honeypaw’s smothering presence was a balm. She wasn’t Paledove, but she was better than nothing. The tabby and white molly lifted her chin under Honeypaw’s praise. It warmed all the icy anxieties in her belly. Honeypaw was proud of her. She was getting it right.

Cricketpaw pressed their pelts together as Honeypaw led her away to go make her new nest in the apprentice den. Honeypaw was helping her, was focused on her, wanted her to succeed. Maybe the ginger apprentice wouldn’t leave her to face everything on her own. She just had to keep being useful. Twist Honeypaw’s easy affection into something lasting. “Thank you for everything.” She said softly, her mismatched gaze finding Honeypaw’s and softening with gratitude. Make her feel important. Make her feel special. Make it seem like it was all worth it. She had to keep Honeypaw around, she would never be Paledove, but she could be safe.

Yewkit had been one of the loudest yowls in the crowd to celebrate the newly named Cricketpaw - his sister. With a huge grin, he weaved through the crowd and ran to Cricketpaw and Honeypaw. "Wow, Cricketki-err, paw! I'm proud of you!" He purred, trying to celebrate her big day despite the dark clouds that seemed to follow him and his sisters. He was desperate to be her entire foundation of support. Paledove was still watching over him from StarClan, and he had to make her proud by protecting them and lifting their spirits. "I can't wait to watch you become a warrior too. I bet you'll have such a cool name!" His tone and excitement almost felt a little artificial given the circumstances, but he was genuinely trying to be a good littermate.

Deep down, he was a little jealous. He felt a pang in his heart that he wasn't the first kit to be apprenticed. It was his turn soon too, right? Does this mean anything...? He shook his head, desperate to clear those thoughts. He has to be happy for his sister now, she deserves her moment. He decided to come along with them in hopes that he'd be useful.
