Sootstorm had been watching Fuzzface's progress with Marigoldpaw for a while, but finally he decided he had to step in. As much as he wanted to trust Fuzzface to take care of the apprentice's needs himself, it was no secret that Fuzzface was hardly a competent warrior, let alone a mentor, and any cat stuck with him for too long was bound to suffer. And so, the deputy sought out Marigoldpaw for a battle assessment. He had given clear instructions: Marigoldpaw would find a predator, and kill it. If he encountered troubles with the predator, Sootstorm would step in, but it would result in a failure, and the apprentice would have to re-take his assessment another day. Sootstorm led the apprentice to the dedicated spot, then stepped back and gestured for him to begin. He shuffled his paws, wondering if this method was a little too harsh.
