Subject: Honeykit's Apprentice Ceremony Tue 26 Dec 2023 - 17:45
"Let all cats old enough to climb a tree gather for a clan meeting!" Once more Wolfblossom's call roused Skyclan. There was a light dusting of snow on the ground, and if so many of the clan weren't sick, she would have said it was a nice day. There was something to look forward too though, and that was one of her grandkits ready to become an apprentice. Mentors were in short supply with how many in Skyclan were sick, but she was determined to oversee their training and ensure they all made it through their apprenticeships lacking nothing.
Honeykit was cleaning scraps of moss out of her fur from earlier, when she had participated in yet another playfight in the nursery with her siblings. She had been pinned down quite easily and had spent the entire morning grooming herself as a result. The sun was gently shining down through the trees into the camp when she heard Wolfblossom's summons.
Honeykit's pelt prickled with a mixture of excitement and curiosity. This isn't just another clan meeting, she thought anxiously. This is the day that we turn six moons old.
As the clan assembled, Honeykit watched all the older cats gather with wide, eager eyes, her tail flicking with anticipation. Her gaze swept over the clearing, searching for her littermates. When she found them, she bounded over to them and purred excitedly.
"Something special is about to happen," she told them. "Have you noticed how the other cats are looking at us?" At her own words, she glanced around and shrank into her pelt as she spotted all the eyes and heard the chorus of hushed whispers about the clearing. She pressed her pelt closer to Brackenkit's, seeking comfort from the kit she looked up to the most. It felt like a pebble had formed in the pit of her stomach, and her paws itched with uneasiness.

"I hope that we can meet again one day, you and I," she mewed, "under peaceful skies."
Wolfblossom's heart warmed to see her grandkits in the crowd, watching as Honeykit spoke with her siblings - the words not audible from this distance. With the kit present, it was time to begin.
"Honeykit, step forward," Wolfblossom smiled down at her granddaughter, a quiet purr rattling in her chest. "You have reached the age of six moons old, and it's time for you to become an apprentice. Until you earn your warrior name, you will be known as Honeypaw." Her shoulders shook as she tried to keep her coughing to a minimum. "Your mentor will be Mistflower. She is a skilled warrior, and I believe she is well suited to take on your training." Mistflower was more skilled than she gave herself credit for, truly, and perhaps both mentor and apprentice would be able to teach each other along the way.
As her name was called, the realization set in that she was the one about to be made an apprentice. Her legs felt frozen to the spot, the pebble in her stomach growing to become a rock. Her eyes rounded and she glanced around at her siblings, seeking reassurance from the familiar faces of her littermates, and then finally back to Wolfblossom.
Wolfblossom. Honeykit felt some warmth return to her frozen legs. The she-cat had nursed her and her littermates after their mother had passed away after their kitting. Her earliest memory was of nuzzling into Wolfblossom's warm fur and taking in her comforting scent. Seeing her gentle smile filled Honeykit with just enough confidence to take the first step.
Honeykit took a few uncertain paces forward towards the center of the clearing, guided by a mix of her own curiosity and the unspoken encouragement of her clanmates. She flicked her tail nervously as she approached Wolfblossom, but a spark of determination lit in her frosty blue eyes. This was her first formal step into the world of a SkyClan warrior, she knew, and as she stood there, a young and eager kit, the entire clan would witness the beginning of Honeykit's transformation into a SkyClan apprentice.
As she approached Wolfblossom, she tried to lift her tail and puff out her chest proudly, but she wasn't convinced that she appeared as confident as she'd wanted. She met her deputy's eyes as her new name was announced - Honeypaw - a name both unfamiliar and exciting.
Honeypaw gave her deputy's shoulder a respectful lick and a purr stirred up in her chest as Mistflower was named her mentor. Her wide blue gaze darted around the crowd of cats, seeking out which cat would step forward to touch noses with her.

An apple a day keeps anyone away if you throw it hard enough
It was Honeykit's turn to become an apprentice and join him in the apprentice's den. Shatteredpaw had tried grooming her that morning, something that was normally done by queens but was a luxery they did not have. No matter, he was here. The tabby watched from the side as the ceremony began, the standard words no less magical than the first time he had heard them. His ear flicked when his sister's mentor was named, and he allowed himself to give the warrior in question in brief glare. Once the ceremony drew to a close, he walked up to the newly-named Honeypaw to give her a gentle bump on the shoulder. "Congrats. I'll help you set up your nest," He offered gently, allowing a moment of fondness to break his ice-cold mask before he steeled himself once more.
Brackenkit had over seen the grooming done by Shatteredpaw this morning, being all the more judgmental for it despite his obvious lack of care for his own appearance. At six moons old slight tabby markings had appeared around his eyes, making the tom looking even more angry than he usually did, but today Brackenkit was all smiles as he joined his siblings for the clan meeting. Part of him hoped it was his ceremony, but he knew it was Honeykit’s and that’s why he’d been so particular with how his sister looked. She was the best and he wanted everyone to know it when they saw her named an apprentice. Brackenkit turned to look at Shatteredpaw blinking in a way of acknowledging their pact. He could tell Honeykit was nervous, and wrapped his tail around his sister pulling her closer. This was one of the rare times Brackenkit was gentle and understanding with those more meek than him.
As Honeykit was named an apprentice, Brackenkit leapt to his paw joining in the chant of her name, he was easily among the loudest, pride for his sister glimmering from his body. He grinned at Shatteredpaw, seeing that his brother was just as excited as he was in his own reserved way.
Harekit remained by the medicine den, eyes watching his siblings prepare each other for their ceremonies... Shatteredpaw first.. now Honeypaw.. Soon enough it would be Brackenkit's turn. How desperately he wanted it to be his turn, for him to get named Harepaw but he knew that wasn't going to happen anytime soon, so he sighed, his grey blue eyes focused on the ceremony, offering a meek "Congrats.." From the sidelines.

As she worked to aid the sick cats of SkyClan and hovered worriedly over her sister, Mistflower had remained distantly aware that the kits around her would eventually be apprenticed. Despite also knowing that she was one of the very lucky few who had managed to avoid illness, she hadn't really considered the possibility that she would be assigned to mentor an apprentice. In her own mind, she still felt like an apprentice: young and inexperienced, and now without her own mentor to rely on, as Dawnfeather had vanished some time ago.
Still, it was her name that Wolfblossom called, and it wasn't like she could refuse the honor of mentoring an apprentice.
All she could do was her best, and as she stepped forward to touch her nose to her apprentice's--her apprentice!--she resolved that she would dedicate herself as completely as she could to the task she'd been assigned. Wolfblossom was placing her faith in her, after all. She was suddenly very glad that she was both somewhat familiar with Honeypaw and that she didn't feel quite as shy around younger cats.
"Congratulations, Honeypaw! We'll start training tomorrow morning, okay? For now, you should go and get settled."

Despite her anxieties, Honeypaw felt as though her entire body was buzzing with excitement. I'm an apprentice now! She couldn't believe this day had come after all the misadventures she and endured with her squad of littermates. Her mind briefly flashed through the moments she had experienced up to this point - Wolfblossom's warm fur, Brackenkit's tumble from a boulder, their near-accident involving Harekit - and she was filled with warmth from her ears to the tip of her tail.
She realized, from this moment, she had begun her journey as a SkyClan apprentice. The weight of her new responsibilities and the anticipation of the training ahead left her both eager and uncertain. She hoped that no matter what, she would have her littermates to depend on, through thick and through thin.
Honeypaw listened to the chorus of voices as her clanmates chanted her new name. She closed her eyes, soaking in the moment. She could hear Brackenkit's voice in the forefront of her mind, yowling as loud as he could, a strong and powerful voice that reminded her that he would likely be following her to the apprentice's den soon enough. His pride for her felt palpable, and she tried to fluff her fur and puff out her chest to appear big, strong, and proud.
As Shatteredpaw approached her with a gentle bump on the shoulder, she let out a grateful purr. She was thankful to have Shatteredpaw to help guide her through her first steps as a new apprentice, and knowing that she would have a spot to share with a familiar face in her new den was comforting. The moment of fondness breaking through Shatteredpaw's usual demeanor did not slip by her unnoticed. "Thanks, Shatteredpaw," she purred warmly to her brother.
Honeypaw was exuberant that her brothers had watched her ceremony. Caught up in their praise, she had almost forgotten that she was watching for Mistflower. Honeypaw's eyes widened with excitement by the time she spotted the she-cat standing beside her, and reached up to touch noses with her mentor, a symbol of their bond.
"Thank you, Mistflower," Honeypaw dipped her head, "I am excited to start my training with you tomorrow! I've never left the camp before, so I'm a little nervous... but..." Honeypaw trailed off, shuffling her paws on the ground. "...I hope that I will learn a lot from you, and become brave and strong, too. I want to become a warrior that SkyClan can be proud of." She blinked up at her mentor, and then glanced back at her littermates. "I'll be up by the first light of dawn," she promised Mistflower, before padding back to where Shatteredpaw would guide her back to the apprentice's den.
Beside him, she halted. Her ears perked toward the medicine den, where she saw Harekit sitting miserably outside. At least he was able to show up for my ceremony, Honeykit thought, not unkindly. She flicked her tail to Shatteredpaw as a signal to wait for her, and went to visit her younger brother.
"Thank you, Harekit," she mewled with a pang of sadness. She knew that Harekit would feel left behind by his littermates if they were all made apprentices before he was able to get over his sickness. "I will bring you the first piece of prey I catch, I promise." She ran her tail over her brother's back in a gesture of compassion and empathy. "And I will save you a spot next to us in the apprentice's den. I am sure you'll be joining us in no time," she encouraged kindly. She blinked fondly at Harekit and dipped her head before wandering back across the clearing towards the apprentice's den, where Shatteredkit was awaiting her. She spared a few glances behind her as she went. Helping to care for Harekit had felt like her purpose in their little clique, she realized. Without him, she didn't really know what she would do. Blinking away the sting in her eyes, she lifted her tail, trying to remain strong. She would keep her promise and fetch as much prey as she could for Harekit.
