Ratpaw listened, uncertain, as his leader spoke and then snarled! The tiny tom — and he did feel tiny, compared to the long, tall forms of the Windclan cats — felt... painfully young, like he had been shielded from this. He’d been born in greenleaf, and prey was running... scarcer, in Shadowclan recently; he did feel it himself, in the slimming of catches and bellies. But it had seemed temporary, never felt like an issue of life and death, or with the urgency that Daystar and Murkystar had running beneath their words. Like they were, perhaps, running out of time.

Food has always been there, for him. Is this why? Because my clanmates fought for it? Even against these cats?

Webshadow had always been cordial, on the subject of other Clans. But  it struck him that this is what the undercurrent of the Gathering was — not disrespect, but cautious hostility — and in his heart, he felt himself steel as Murkystar’s words did. His mother would be afraid for him, Ratpaw thought, but she would never think Ratpaw didn’t love them; this clan.

Training with Webshadow taught him that battle couldn’t be fought with uncertainty, or distraction. And so he let himself feel it — Murkystar’s words. It was with only a little fear, a little uncertainty, that he responded.

From his place beside Batglow, Ratpaw struck — it was with a twist of his body that he ran for a cat younger than the others. It was a second’s decision. Quiet as a night-hunter even in daylight, Ratpaw leapt and collided with the grey apprentice paws to shoulder, taking them down with teeth and claws and the glinting of yellow-gold eyes.

Ratpaw used Jumping Strike on Mistypaw, dealing 6 damage (4+3 unfocused, -1 for Moor Runner) and costing 7 SP.

Daystar trying to talk this out peacefully was admirable, Ashfall knew that. She also knew, however, that nobody liked giving up prey. When Murkystrike called for her clan to attack, Ashfall was ready to fight. Maybe she wasn't ready to see her mate hurt, though. As Murkystrike moved toward their leader, Ashfall called out "Daysta-!" before she was knocked to the ground by another Shadowclan warrior. Snarling as claws pricked her shoulders, holding her down, she started trying to escape. Her bad paw just wasn't giving her the leverage to push the warrior off her though.

Ashfall used Duck and Twist, failing, she dealt 3 damage, and used 5 stamina! Still pinned this turn!

The she-cat had called out to Daystar, a warning maybe? And that distraction had led to Mistyfalcon having little trouble keeping her down as he raked his claws across her shoulders. The she-cat wriggled, trying to escape, and doing a poor job of it. Perhaps it was that she'd been distracted, perhaps it was her clearly previously-injured paw. Either way, one of her paws caught him in the rib, though for all that Mistyfalcon noticed it might as well have not happened at all. He responded with a snap of teeth at the she-cat's ear.

Ashfall bit back a yowl as teeth sunk into her remaining ear and ripped, causing a torrent of blood to start staining her fur. Rolling, and dislodging her opponent in the process, she was able to get back to her paws. Wasting no time, she darted forward with claws aimed at his legs. She slashed as well as she could before jumping back, attempting to get out of range so that she could plan her next attack carefully.

For a heartbeat Mistyfalcon felt bad, he'd had his ears bitten more times than he wanted to recount. One crazy Skyclanner had eaten them, but he wouldn't show his opponent the same disrespect and nor was he a cannibal. He spat, lip curling. The Windclanner turned on him with claws unsheathed, and blood welled from where they sank into his shoulders. She seemed like she was trying to keep back, and Mistyfalcon darted past her with a sudden burst of speed. Windclanners weren't the only ones who were fast, as the hares gracing Shadowclan's fresh-kill pile would attest.

The dark-furred tom sank his teeth into her tail and pulled back sharply. If the she-cat wasn't quick enough, she was likely going to find it hard to keep her footing.

She really should have been more prepared when the ShadowClan cats came charging at the patrol, but with Daystar's pleas for peace, she wasn't sure. Until the tortoiseshell launched herself at the leader. Another cats had launched at her mentor, but before she could help, she herself had been barreled into. With a squeal, she went down, taken aback. Well this sucked, even the apprentice of the patrol was bigger than her.

"Oh sure, go after the tiny cat! Because I am such an easy target!" She snarled at the black cat, clearly annoyed. Twisting around, she latched on to the cat's front leg, before getting on her own paws and lashing out.

"Not so fun when the runt can fight back, is it?!"

Mistypaw used Snap and Swift Strike, dealing 9(6+3) damage and costing 17 (10+7) stamina.

It didn't take long before Murkystrike had given the order to attack, of course as soon as that came through, the ever so swift Windclan cats were on top of them.. or rather at least him in the fight. He should have expected this, and in his mind he thought he did, but he wasn't prepared for this fast. Regardless.. he had a territory to defend, he wouldn't let himself be caught too off guard.

He had staggered back from the initial attack but recovered while he could. He might not have been as fast as the Windclan cats but he still had some speed to him. He quickly returned the blow by slipping around and yanking the she-cats tail.

Batglow used tail yank dealing 5 (-1) damage, -15 SP. Swiftspirit is stunned for one turn!

Ratpaw flinched at the blows, leg burning and feeling claws slash across his cheek — Windclan apprentices were fast! He recoiled, darting out of range. It might’ve been after throwing her to the ground, but he was also taken aback by the molly’s mew, blinking. ”I’m not that much bigger than you!” he yowled, face stinging.

Ratpaw was rather small-sized, for his age. But it was so odd to be close to evenly matched; Ratpaw trained to fight full-grown warriors, to harry and unbalance them by being underfoot. Ratpaw couldn’t here: she was obviously too slippery, like a snake. It was annoying. Thinking quickly, he pivoted toward the apprentice — maybe he couldn’t trip her, but he could certainly unbalance her! He’d done it.

Head-first, he just tackled the molly, full-strength — forcing them both to tumble in the dry dirt. Fiercely, the little black tom bit and held with his paws, struggling to keep her still.

The Shadowclanner was quick, surprisingly. His fangs sank into her tail and pulled sharply, and Swiftspirit hissed as she fought against being pulled off balance. It took her precious moments to make sure her footing was steady, and she growled at the dark-furred tom in annoyance. He'd pay for that.

Timbersun could feel the tension in the air as the two clans locked eyes with each other. Shadowclan clearly brought a fighting patrol, not a conversating one, and so had Windclan. His tail flicked as Daystar started speaking, glancing between his clanmates. He had a feeling that this wouldn't end without any cat getting hurt, and honestly, he was prepared for that. Shaking his brown fur, he flexed his claws after Daystar finished speaking. Murkystrike's voice was stern. With a flick of the she-cat's tail, cats leapt straight into action.

The battle had begun.

He watched the crowd of cats closely, looking for a target among the cats. He wasn't looking forward when suddenly the wind was knocked out of him by a brown and black cat. He scrambled to his paws, now with outstretched claws and hissed. "Even if you defeat me, Windclan wont let you frog-brains win." He lowered himself into a crouch and then leaped. Windclan will win this battle. They had to.

He latched onto the tom, pinning him with a snarl. He dug his claws as deep as he could, holding him down. His fur was raised, making him seem a tiny bit bigger than he was, his tail swayed side to side, trying to make sure the tom stayed down.

Burningwing hissed and rolled with his attacker, making an attempt to twist away from his grasp. The Windclanner was cheeky enough to actually speak mid battle.... what was it with cats running their mouths mid battle?? If one had the energy to speak, they ought to be using it to bite their enemies. It wasn't anything important, merely something meant to rouse his ire apparently. Angered cats made mistakes... but fearful cats... they made far worse mistakes and were more likely to flee.

The dark tom wriggled enough to put his mouth near Timbersun's ear and a sinister, toothy grin spread across Burningwing's face like a chasm ripping open the earth.

"Windclan can't win...

... If they're all dead."

And with that he whirled and thrashed beneath Timbersun's claws in an attempt to escape. He successfully ripped away from his foe's claws and got to his paws. He kept that same sinister grin, a growl of triumph now rumbling deep in his throat. What would the Windclanner do now?
