Herb Dazed [Closed]

Choosing to hunt the other day instead of herb hunt might not have been the best choice considering that it put him behind a bit, but he was happy with his choice. Though at the moment he was a little regretful. He was up to his ears in having to collect different herbs though it would just take a good days work and he would be fine. It just seemed a little overwhelming right now is all. At least here he would have Beechface help him search for certain things. Though it was a little weird just being the two of them.

Herb List:

Beechface was glad to be out of camp. The late newleaf sun was warm, and the last thing she felt like doing was sitting around idle. She'd taken stock of what herbs she needed (this was Skyclan, and so she was always running low on something, as a rule) and had been glad enough to join the Thunderclan medicine cat in looking for herbs. Dovefrost wasn't someone she knew that well, but Mossbloom and Daisybloom had trained him, and the older Thunderclan medicine cats had always been a good sort.

"Hello, Dovefrost." She greeted as she spotted the white tom near the fallen oak. They both needed herbs, and two medicine cats looking would be faster than one. Plus they could split what they found. Beechface's gaze swept over the fallen oak and their surroundings, and she was determined to ignore the scent of of squirrel that made her claws itch to hunt. Some instincts, it seemed, never left, no matter how long she'd been a medicine cat.

Herbs, right. It didn't take long to spot a plant with large leaves, and Beechface padded towards it, eyeing the plant. Dock, it tended to grow more towards Thunderclan's border than her usual haunts, but with the amount of trouble her clanmates got into, there were plenty of scratches and sore pads that would benefit from the herb.

"There's some dock over here." She called over her shoulder to Dovefrost, carefully beginning to harvest what she could while leaving room for the plant to regrow.

As soon as Beechface showed up the white tom dipped his head. "Hello Beechface." He replied, not really bothering to say much more. He never was big on conversation, though he perked up as soon as she mentioned finding Dock. Green eyes took in where she was, making a mental note of the location to get a couple of leaves before he left later, and to remember the location when ever he needed it again. "Good to know, I will keep it in mind."

The white tom wanted to see what else he could find, if he could find something that would be useful for both of them as well. Green eyes scanned the little bit of territory by the border, his nose taking in the scents, ignoring the scents of prey that lingered around. He would have to join a hunting patrol again sometime soon.

A small fleck of yellow caught the tom's attention. As he moved closer he was able to recognize what the plant was. Tansy. It was a good find. If he remembered correctly, it had a number of uses. Certainly useful. He carefully harvested what was needed, leaving some left over, as well as making sure it had room to grow more as needed. "Got some tansy over here, Beechface." He called to the other.

"Tansy, good find." Beechface said, tail twitching. She'd memorize this spot for later, tansy was always useful.

Dovefrost didn't seem to be one for much conversation, and that was fine with Beechface. She said little as she continued to search for more herbs, green eyes scanning the thick undergrowth. A spiny-leaved plant with red berries caught her attention, and Beechface felt her lip curl. Holly berries had no place in her den, and she had no intention of harvesting them. She didn't think she needed to mention them, either, finding poison was about as good as finding nothing.

Dovefrost let out a small hum as carefully set aside the now harvested tansy in a dry location for the two medicine cats to retrieve later. He wasn't all to quick to move on, in his mind there wasn't a rush to get this done. Thunderclan knew where he was so if he was needed they could come fetch him, plus Mossbloom was in camp so if it was dire they had her.

As he moved he decided to speak, not really knowing what to say, but wanting to know if anything not worthy was going on in Skyclan. "Anything new in Skyclan?" He asked, there usually wasn't much going on with the clans but it was always good to ask. His mind might have been occupied by herbs, but he could still make conversation. A familiar plant caught his eye. It was a plant he had seen numerous times these days due to Minkstream's condition, so he certainly needed those. "Found some Poppyseeds." He called out to the other as he began to collect what he could.

"There's certainly never a dull moment, that's for sure." Beechface huffed out a laugh, though it was a strained laugh. Too many warriors had died recently, and more had joined the elder's den. Her relationship with Wolfstar and her parents (not to mention Ravenclaw) were strained at best... And that was nothing she could tell the white Thunderclanner she was hunting herbs with.

"One of our warriors is showing interest in helping me more, yet I can't help but feel a bit guilty. It's better that he's willing of course, Starclan knows I wasn't. Still, it's a lot of responsibility for a cat to take on." A visible shudder made its' way from her head to her tail at the mention of the poppy seeds, but hopefully Dovefrost would simply attribute it to her dismay at the weight of responsibility that settled across her scarred back like a boulder. Unrelenting and soul crushing.

Beechface forced her gaze to sweep along the forest floor, in search of something useful. And that's when her eyes caught movement. She took a half-step closer and registered the buzzing... Honey. Bees. Foxdung.

"There's honey over here... And bees. Lots of bees." Beechface said softly, eyeing the beehive uneasily. Her voice hadn't gotten slightly higher in pitch. No. Honey was useful, and with Redfall's cough, it wouldn't go to waste. But it was difficult to gather and bees were... bees. Not that Beechface would ever admit to being scared of them. They were tiny creatures and she was a massive cat. What was there to fear?

Another small hum left the tom as he listened to the older medicine cat talk about things happening in her clan. "A warrior huh?" He couldn't imagine.. He never really had an interest in herbs, but Starclan called upon him all those moons ago. "As long as it makes him happy, besides it's about time you took an apprentice. I don't even know what I'm going to do when the time finally comes for me. Stars.." He stopped speaking getting lost in thought not realizing that she had found something else in

"Bees?" Dovefrost echoed without giving his words much thought, even though the honey was the more important part of this find here. He paused in his own search approaching Beechface with slow movements to not disturb the creatures that held a valuable resource for them both. "Do you have a plan in mind?" He asked cautiously. He wouldn't mind getting some honey but they had to be smart about it if they didn't want to make the bees angry.

"It'll be nice to have an extra set of paws, and he's level-headed." She agreed, "What, are you saying I'm old?" She joked, a genuine smile threatening at the edge of her mouth. Dovefrost wasn't wrong that it was about time she found a potential apprentice. She'd been saying she wanted someone to take over her role for moons, after all.

"You'll find someone eventually. A warrior will want to do something different, or there will be a kit that is more interested in looking at plants than fighting. As long as it's what they want to do..." Beechface shrugged.

"Don't get stung?" She commented dryly. In short, no, Beechface didn't have a plan. She struggled to recall how her old mentor had gathered honey wile dealing with the sore throats and nasty coughs most of the clan had had after the fire that drove Skyclan out of their territory.

"We could just catch the drippings, or... How steady are you with a stick? We could wrap a leaf around the end of a longer one and try to get it the honey that way." Even this far from the parts of Skyclan territory that had been decimated by the fire, there were still plenty of snapped branches and sticks that could be used. There was a long, thin stick that had fallen near the base of a nearby tree, and Beechface experimentally lifted it in her mouth. It was long enough that her face wouldn't be uncomfortably close to the bees at least... Though even being in the same territory as them could have been considered uncomfortably close.

A grin broke out on Dovefrost's face at Beechface's words. He didn't think she was old, but she had been working alone for so long. He was glad that she had some help, and taking in her advice about looking for his own apprentice to mind. He didn't know if he was ready for one yet, but he was going to keep an eye out that was for certain.

Green eyes turned back to the beehive at hand. They had an issue they needed to take care of. While collecting the drops might be good, he didn't know for certain how much that would get them. If they went for the hive, it would be an issue because of the bees. "How about we see what drops we can collect, and if it isn't enough then we can try the stick thing?" The white tom suggested, while he didn't mind holding the stick he didn't know how steady he would be. One thing he knew, he wanted the honey.

"Alright." Beechface was eager to not deal with getting stung, personally. Collecting drippings would give them less honey than she would have liked, but it was much less risky. It was far less likely to result in a swarm of angry bees coming after the two medicine cats, at any rate, and that was a good thing.

The medicine cat rummaged along the forest floor, finding several broad beech leaves. Better to get the sticky stuff on the leaves instead of stuck in their fur. With how warm it had been recently, honey dripped from several spots of the beehive hanging above, but what honey had fallen on the ground had already mostly hardened, it seemed. Setting several leaves down so that their edges just overlapped, Beechface stepped back. It wasn't in her nature to be patient... But being patient was better than dealing with beestings.
