No Pain Just Gain [CLOSED]

Amberfluff went up to the Apprentice Den. Forget it being early in the morning, she should get down to training. While she may not be all too excited about Muddypaw, he did seem to be good friends with her kits. And besides, it was still her responsibility to train her Apprentice, as much as she was unhappy about how aggressive he seemed even if he was just playing with other kits.

"Muddypaw, training time." She announced dryly.

Muddypaw blinked into awareness as he heard his name get called, flopping onto his side as he groaned and threw a paw over his eyes. It was early and he was tired. And so he laid there for a few heartbeats, content to ignore whoever had called him...Before the words that had followed his name sank in. Training! Any grogginess that the tom had was gone in an instance as he leapt to his paws and stumbled from the den, turning to see Amberfluff waiting for him. "Sorry, I'm awake now!" he meowed quickly, straightening up with a smile. "What are we gonna do today? What kind of training?" he asked, bouncing on his paws - excited for whatever lesson it was going to be.

Amberfluff flicked her tail, relieved to see Muddypaw finally show up. "Hunting. Mixed with a bit of territory exploration, but then again I won't be surprised if you already knew a good amount of it." The older she-cat glanced at the Apprentice, one eyebrow raised, then lead the way towards the camp entrance.

Not too long after they were out of camp, Amberfluff paused in her steps. Her ears flicked from side to side, her eyes narrowed as she looked around. She could have sworn she heard a noise close by. And the noise sounded nothing like a prey animal. She tensed up. "Careful." She informed Muddypaw.

Oh! ...Hunting. The exictement he had for learning was snuffed out for a brief heartbeat, his expression shifting before he shook his head and padded after her. "Oh yeah, I know some hunting but I only got the basics... Also...Maybe going over the borders wouldn't be so bad..." he added, before he fell silent as he followed his mentor out of camp. His gaze was on his paws, barely catching when Amberfluff came to a sudden halt. He froze, watching as her fur prickled as he glanced around to try to see what had her tensing out. He gave the air a sniff before he twitched his whiskers and glanced at his mentor. "Do you...Do you smell something?" he asked, his voice soft with slight nervousness.

Amberfluff nodded, a small movement less she startles their opponent. She doubted this was a clanmate, and the hissing sound didn't sound like any type of prey. In fact, she remembered, she had heard this type of sound before. That time she went hunting on her own and ended up having to run away from the tunnels because of this one specific predator. Hopefully this isn't what she think it could be...

Suddenly, a loud hiss erupted. Amberfluff spun around, claws unsheathed, just in time to see a long creature jump and bite down on Muddypaw's leg. With a yowl, she slashed with unsheathed claws, striking out at the snake. The creature was moving fast, attempting to dodge, and Amberfluff realised with horror that just like last time, she had no guarantee that she could hit this creature.

Thankfully, though, Amberfluff found her claws coming into contact with the snake. Annoyingly it was still alive and looked like it was ready for another round of battle.

A wild Snake has appeared! Snake used Serpent Strike, dealing 10 HP of damage to Muddypaw and using 20 SP!

Muddypaw huffed softly to himself as Amberfluff nodded - she smelled something...But what? Annoyance flared up in him as he took a step away to try to locate whatever she had taken notice of...Before he felt something sharp in his leg. He looked down in surprise to see something was biting him as he simply blinked at it in a heartbeat of confusion before he leapt at Amberfluff's sudden yowl as she struck at it. The green thin creature released Muddypaw as it tried to slip away, only for Amberfluff's claws to strike it. He titled his head, all rather confused at the sudden turn of events before a new light hit his eyes, this was a fight. He bounced on his paws before he made a jump at the thing, claws out as he tried to pin it. His right paw managed to land square on the creature's neck - or at least he assumed it was its neck...Did the entire creature count as a neck? - and with a sickening crunch, it fell still.

The apprentice frowned, leaning down to give it a sniff before he drew back in disappointment. "Its...Dead? Aw man, that was hardly a fight at all!" he whined as he stepped back to give his paw a shake...Before his eyes fell onto the streaks of crimson that ran down his leg from where the fangs had met its mark. There was a pause as he leaned over to give is bloodied leg a sniff as well, before his ears slicked back as he huffed and started to lick at the wounds. "So...Should we hunt here?" he questioned, glancing over at his mentor with no great care about the two large fang wounds in is leg. "Also what is...This? I've never seen a thing like this. ...Can we eat it? Is it prey?" he questioned, as he batted at it with his bad leg, already having grown tired of trying to clean up the blood that was still running from the wounds.

Muddypaw used Front-Paw Strike, dealing 6 damage* and costing 10 stamina.

Amberfluff found herself staring in shocked silence as Muddypaw seemed to have no reaction to his bloody, injured, and possibly poisoned leg. On second thought, as she gave the snake another glance, she observed that it didn't have the twin long fangs that showed a snake was venomous. Alright, so Muddypaw wasn't poisoned. That didn't explain how he seemed utterly unconcerned that there was a gash in his leg! He gave it a few licks and immediately turned back to the snake-he was batting at it with his injured leg. How? Amberfluff had gotten injured before, and trying to move a leg while it was that injured was very very painful. How was Muddypaw not even showing any trace of pain on his face? Even Amberfluff herself shows it when it was painful!

"It's a snake, very dangerous but edible if eaten right." Amberfluff said distractedly, still staring at Muddypaw's leg-before she remembered blood loss was a thing. "You...should stop trying to move that bleeding leg. Isn't it painful for you at all?" The older cat asked, severely unnerved. She began to think back on what she knew about bleeding to try and remember how to treat it, though she did know moving was not the way to go.

Snake. Huh...He frowned as he continued to bat at it. If it was dangerous to eat, he guess it wasn't worth taking back...Not that he cared, he didn't really mind what he ate when others poked him about it. He stuck his tongue out, grimacing at the thought. Everything he had tried tasted the same to him, he didn't get why people got so picky over their favori... He drifted off as Amberfluff suddenly told him to stop moving his leg, freezing as it was resting on the snake's head. At the question if it was painful...He blinked, glancing down at it.

Was it...Suppose to hurt? He could feel a pit start to grow in his stomach, claws sinking into the rough skin of the snake. "...N-No," he managed, taking in a deep breath. "It...It doesn't hurt at all. I don't..." He drifted off, ears slicking back. Another thing...Did he have another thing wrong with him? His mind thought back to when all the kits would complain about him hurting them when they played and his eyes narrowed before shook his head to try to calm himself. He turned to look at Amberfluff, his voice quite as he tried not to let it quiver. "It...It should be hurting, shouldn't it? I felt the sharpness of the fangs but I...No pain."

Muddypaw's response was...more than concerning. He didn't feel the pain? But that can't be, can it? Even if the snake had some sort of special venom it shouldn't dull the pain so much that Muddypaw can't feel anything apart from the sense of something in his body. How is it possible that there was a hundred percent no pain? It couldn't have been caused by the snake...

...Which meant it had to be something with Muddypaw.

Amberfluff guessed that since some cats were born unable to see or hear, it shouldn't be impossible for cats to not feel pain. It also meant cats could very well be unable to smell or taste, which was...a very disturbing thought. Amberfluff's life was based around seeing, hearing, smelling, feeling, tasting-sensing in general. She couldn't imagine not having any of these. And the fact that logically these disabilities can all pile on the same cat is...severely disturbing. She hoped for Muddypaw's sake that the ability to feel pain was the only one he was missing.

Glancing back at the wound, Amberfluff swallowed. "If you're actually just unable to feel pain...That's very disturbing. For one, you'd need to be accompanied at all times, either by someone with basic knowledge of healing or with the distance limited to just outside the clan. You'd need to go for checkups often to make sure you don't have an injury somewhere..." She broke off. "We need to get back to camp first." Glancing at Muddypaw with eyes that showed a surprising amount of worry for Amberfluff, the she-cat leaned down to pick him up by the scruff, not bothering to wait for protests-she wasn't going to risk making Muddypaw walk back-and spun, running for the camp.

Muddypaw sat there in long silence as he waited for a response, slowly shifting into a crouch as it was clear that Amberfluff was trying to form her answer. Every heartbeat that passed just pounded it in - it was bad. It was wrong. Another thing he couldn't sense... Finally she spoke, and he closed his eyes as he winced as she admitted that it was very disturbing. She set out clear rules - he couldn't leave camp by himself. He would have to visit the medicine cats often... Was he that much of a risk? He barely processed her words of them going back to camp - not realizing that more had been said until he let out a yelp as he was lifted off his feet and she went running for the camp.

As he swayed in her grip, his gaze fell onto his bleeding leg and the blood that was sliding off to mark their path. His eyes narrowed as he tried to focus on it - recalling the feeling of the sharp prick of the fangs but... He gritted his teeth, trying to break through the numbness that seemed to be blocking pain - whatever it felt like - but...Nothing. Even as he tried to pull forth the feeling...It was hard to guess what it would feel like as he numbly realized that he had never felt it. He...He couldn't feel pain. It was true, wasn't it?

Another thing wrong with him...

He closed his eyes and tried not to cry as Amberfluff took him home.
