Something had spurred him to ask Rapidfire to accompany him for a hunt that evening, even as the moon snuck up onto the darkening sky and the cold winds of the night warned the moor. He had never been very close with his mentor, unlike the typical pairs. He had been... ambitious, demanding, judgemental of a cat he knew nothing about. Was he regretful? ...No, not really. He had thought her to be soft, and now that she was his leader... she did not change in his mind. He did. He was just as soft as her...
The black warrior stalked through the tall golden grass in silence, Rapidfire alongside him. A companion, a cat he would have to learn to know, despite all the feelings he harbored within himself. He had thought Tigerstar invincible-- of course, he knew that all cats would leave for StarClan one day, but, foolishly, he had thought he had time. Even when Redpaw and Moosepaw and Quickpaw went missing, amongst so many others, he thought his father would always be there. A given, a fact. Something that would stand alongside the mountains against the march of time... a soft exhale left him.
"I apologize for leaving without notice." His voice was softer than he imagined. Was it from lack of use along his lonesome journey, or from the tears bubbling unshed in his eyes? Leopardwind did not turn to face Rapidfire; fear kept his gaze on the dirt below him. They were firmer than the stars... and, he found, far more comforting. If he had stayed in WindClan instead of wandering off in pursuit of his lost family... would Tigerstar still be here? If there had been one more set of eyes around, one more pair of claws... would things have been different? He couldn't stop the guilt that crawled up his throat. He had been selfish, racing off into the unknown with only Laurelriver knowing of his departure. He was lucky to return, he knew. And yet, he didn't feel lucky. He came home alone, without any of the cats he had set off to look for... and perhaps, he had lost a little of himself along the way, too. Home was no longer, well, home.
"I don't trust you," Leopardwind whispered, wondering if he was speaking to his companion or the stars. Or perhaps, he was speaking to himself? "But, I swore a vow, and as a warrior of WindClan.." The warrior whirled around to face Rapidfire, a small but heavy breath leaving him. Golden eyes, usually so stoic, brimmed with tears. "I will support you in everything you do!" Something forced his head low, so low his whiskers brushed the sweet, sweet dirt of home. He closes his eyes, letting the words tumble out without grace. Passion would coat his words instead. "I understand now, my limitations, my weakness-- but I won't let that stop me! I'll become the strongest warrior of WindClan, a cat you can be proud to have known! Forgive me for my mistakes, I-" He choked on his words, but pushed on regardless, "-I'll make my family proud, wherever they are now!" Forgive me, the words ran through his mind, My words fail me, but I hope you will understand regardless... my Leader.
Was that tears that wet the grass beneath his claws?

RAPIDFIRE
Play the Vienna for White...
Rapidfire did not expect to be on a hunting patrol so late, especially not with Leopardwind. Her former apprentice was the last clanmate she expected to ask her for a hunt. She was pretty sure he disliked her at best. She accepted in either case, the clan needed food and she was not about to turn away an offer to hunt and to also spend some time out of camp.
For awhile it was in silence, until he chose to break that and explained a lot of things... She blinked looking at him as he applogized. "Don't trust me?" she whispered a bit disheartened but more so confused. As he continued her ears lay flat on her head, of course, she understood the loosing of a father all too well. Her father also vanished as a high rank of the clan leaving her and her siblings to fend for their own. She was the only one left of them now. She wouldn't wish the pain she knew that cam with that on anyone especially not her apprentice.
She nodded silently until she was sure he was done expressing what he felt, "There is nothing to be sorry for, all is forgiven. I am just glad you are home safe once again." she swallowed hard debating if she wanted to say the next words that came to mind...
"I know that your father would be proud of you" she wasn't sure if she needed those words more or he did, but in either case she felt somehow lost in all this, he went from not wanting her at all to putting all his trust in her. She would do everything she could to not let him down, as if there was not enough pressure on her already.
She brushed his shoulder with her tail. "It will be alright" she meowed and let him be for a moment figuring he might want a minute to himself, she knew she did after all of this.
She took a deep breath in of the cool night air. She sniffed a bit, the air held rabbit scent. She hardly felt up for hunting anymore but the hungry stomachs back home would not care what she felt if she returned empty pawed. Stalking forwards she approached where she belived it to be.
Spotting the long ears sticking up above the grass of the moorlands she pounced at it!
The rabbit was away in an instant with her right on its paws. She would have this! She could nearly taste it already. However, it was not meant to be as an attack from above sent her sprawling suddenly. The flapping of wings in the night air were iniduative of the owls whom were out at this time.

Leopardwind bit back a noise at Rapidfire's words. Would he dare to believe that Tigerstar would be proud of him? Leopardwind couldn't even be proud of himself. Still, he forced his gaze upwards to meet his Leader. He couldn't find it in him to hate the softness of her gaze as he used to. She had always been so impossibly soft. He wondered now if he had mistaken compassion for weakness. Had he not once thought the two to be the same? Oh, how he had changed since then. Could Rapidfire see it too, the marks his journey had left on him? More than just the weariness in his eyes and the new scars that littered his pelt. Had she noticed the way time seemed to have etched itself into him? "I-" How was he meant to respond to that? But there was no need-- Rapidfire had left to hunt, something he probably should as well.
He whipped around at the sound of clashing claws. He let out a soft laugh before he managed to stifle it. The sudden attack, though clearly unpleasant, had eased some of the tension off his chest. The warrior darted in alongside Rapidfire, surprising even himself with the strength in his limbs as he pinned the bird down. But of course, he had spent ages by himself, surely his skills would improve? He could feel the bird thrash under his claws, almost taste the blood that welled up. He sent Rapidfire a wolfish grin, sharp teeth glinting. "One day, I'm going to make you proud too." It was a promise; it was a fact.

RAPIDFIRE
Play the Vienna for White...
Rapidfire took full opportunity of the pinned bird. She bit at it until she felt the birds flapping and stuggling weaken. She bit harder in not letting up and held on tight until she felt it fall limp below her. She slowly let go of it. Soft, short feathery bits stuck to her tongue and mouth and she twitched flicking and spitting them out. Around the owls neck where she bit was full of that dow feathery material "are you okay? did it get you at all?" she was a bit annoyed at her missed opportunity to catch things for the clan. However, she was able to keep her focus that making sure her clanmates were okay first. He hadn't seemed to be and had evidently not forgotten anything during his time away... if anything perhaps he had even gotten better. He wanted to make her proud?? That was what he had said right? It was hard to tell given the middle of the fight. She gave him a little nod and picked at the owl turning it over.
Carefully nipping out a feather she offered it to him, it was a nice feather, a longer type not the shorter downie ones that had been icky to bite into. "Want it?"

"I'm fine," Leopardwind assurred Rapidfire, surprised by the lack of emotion behind his voice. For once, he wasn't frustrated that she seemed to think he would have been hurt, or angry that she didn't thank him for helping her out, or even proud of dispatching the owl so quickly. In fact, he found that his gaze was lingering over her pelt, eyeing the fresh injury with concern. "We should head back to get that looked at." Was he concerned about her? Yes, that must be the strangely familiar feeling that clung to the back of his throat. His response was standard; she was hurt, and they should get it taken care of before it turned infected or something even nastier. But still, he wasn't used to the genuine rush of concern that made the words fall out a little fast, nor was he used to the way he had said it as if he wouldn't take 'no' for an answer. Using such a tone, to his leader? Where had his manners gone? But, maybe, this was something that could be forgiven. He let his gaze fall away from the scratch, only snapping back to her face when Rapidfire spoke to him again.
Leopardwind blinked at the feather, momentarily taken aback. He would have refused it once-- after all, it was just a feather, a useless thing that would fall off soon anyway-- but something in him let his head bow so that Rapidfire could tuck the feather behind his ear. He wondered how kit-like he looked with a feather behind his ear. "Thank you."
