Begin all over again (closed)

Stoatclaw sat just outside of camp, taking the time to collect himself while Honeypaw woke herself up. He hadn't expected himself to be this excited to train another apprentice given his history with them, but he was ready to burst out of his pelt already. Unlike Lightningbreeze and Cricketpaw he'd make sure Honeypaw would get a proper mentor, but... What would happen if she went missing like Cricketpaw? He knew Falconmoon would blame him, but punishment was a whole other set of worries for the tom. Could he get kicked out of Skyclan? If so, who, aside from his mate, would stand up for him? Would he- No, no! She hasn't even gone missing yet, why are you thinking like that? And with any luck, she never would. The tom shook his head until it was free of thought, just in time to hear paw steps coming from the camp's entrance. Turning to face the young cat, Stoatclaw mewed, "Ready for your first day of training?"

Honeypaw had had a bit of trouble falling asleep the night before due to sheer excitement, but when Stoatclaw had come to rouse her she was quick to make her way from the apprentice den, bounding toward the camp entrance on quick paws, though the apprentice failed to suppress a yawn. Still, she was excited despite the lack of sleep.

"Hi Stoatclaw," Honeypaw skidded to a stop before her mentor, "What are we doing today?" Ready? Of course she was ready! She'd be able to shrug off the remaining tiredness easily enough, she thought.

Ah, no matter who he was given, Skyclan's youth was always so excited to start their training. The tom gave himself a good shake to clear the rest of the unsavory thoughts from his head. "I thought I could teach you how to fight. It's a lot easier to learn something when you're actually doing it, so we'll start with a spar and I'll correct you afterwards." Stoatclaw positioned himself in front of the young molly then dropped into a defensive stance. "Take a swing at me when you're ready. I'll go easy on you since this'll be your first time sparring."

Sparring? The idea sent both excitement and trepidation through the young apprentice, but she nodded. "Okay, I'll do my best." She mewed. Stoatclaw was taller and heavier than the half-grown she-cat, and she wasn't sure where exactly she should start. Of course, she and her siblings had done plenty of playfighting as kits, but this was... Different. Or maybe it wasn't so different? She would find out, and Stoatclaw would guide her, of that Honeypaw was certain. She reached out with a white forepaw, careful to keep her claws sheathed.

"I know you will." The tom purred in response. Sure enough, Honeypaw's first strike landed easily on the tom. Stoatclaw retaliated with a paw of his own, swiftly lashing out and cuffing the side of Honeypaw's head. "Faster attacks mean less power and vice versa." The tom's head bobbed as he challenged the molly to take another swing. Learning to fight had been deceptively simple. On one paw, all you really had to do was bite and claw at whatever you wanted dead, but on the other, there were countless things to think about in a fight. The amount of power you used for an attack, your own stamina, your opponents movements and tells, and so on. One misstep could cost you dearly. In this spar Honeypaw didn't have anything to worry about, but against a predator, or stars forbid an opposing clan cat, she wouldn't be so fortunate.

Honeypaw nodded as Stoatclaw spoke. "That makes sense." The basics of fighting seemed simple enough, and she knew that she could only improve if she practiced. She swiped another paw at her mentor, this time less hesitant.

The tom gave a slight nod. Honeypaw seemed to be feeling a bit more confident with her attack. Stoatclaw stepped toward the apprentice and bit lightly at her scruff.

She hadn't expected to feel her mentor's teeth in her scruff, but that did give her an idea. Honeypaw turned, catching her mentor's shoulder in her teeth. The move may have worked better with a different grip, like an ear ot the back of his neck, but maybe she'd be able to do something with it.
