Subject: Hornetkit's Apprentice Ceremony Sat 11 May 2024 - 19:06
Falconmoon climbed up to the Tallbranch and took in the sight of the camp before it awakened. He could hear the beginnings of warriors and apprentices stirring, so he didn't feel too horrible when he called out. "Let all cats old enough to climb a tree gather beneath the Tallbranch for a clan meeting!" He sat down upon it, resting his tail off to one side. Skyclan needed growth, and while he had his own kits coming soon enough, this was a welcome distraction from all of the chaos there had been lately.

Hornetkit
son of sunfire : soldier of skyclan
Hornetkit was eagerly pushed out of the nursery, his size having become a regular nuisance to other queens and kits alike. He shook out his scruff and blinked against the light. His large paws padded alongside his mother, though not with the usual happiness he usually bounced with. Hornetkit still didn't understand. Where is Sunfire? What happened to Dad? he continued to wonder. The tom-kit settled under Mintglade's cozy arm. He didn't look at anything or anyone except the camp entrance, desperately hoping the blazing gold warrior would suddenly show himself. Please...

Her time had been split in half between the nursery and warrior's den, with her kits now being more than old enough to survive on their own, but also simply the fact that those remaining weren't the responsibility of the other Queens to ensure that they behaved. Sunfire's disappearance had taken a heavy toll on them-all of them. She saw how they wistfully looked towards the camp entrance, and asked her constantly just where their father was. It hurt her heart.
Purring out of pure instinct as Hornetkit nestled up onto her side, she followed his gaze. Yet again, her heart squeezed. "I know, Hornetkit. I know. I want him to come back, too." The large tabby molly murred to her son, nuzzling his ear in a comforting way. It was all she could do. "Let's hope Falconmoon has some good news for us, yeah? Maybe news about Sunfire... or perhaps your apprentice ceremony?" She had to keep their spirits up. It would be her burden to carry their broken hearts in her chest, but as a mother... she couldn't handle seeing them so sad.
Falconmoon didn't miss the gaze Hornetkit gave the camp entrance. His heart lurched in sympathy and the tom sighed quietly. He missed his brother too, but all he could do right now was look forward. The apprentice ceremony might be a good distraction for the kit, soon to be apprentice. "Hornetkit, step forward. You have reached the age of six moons and it is time for you to be apprenticed. From today until the day you earn you warrior name, you will be called Hornetpaw. Crookedlight will be your mentor. His experience as a Skyclan warrior will be invaluable to your instruction." He waited, giving the apprentice and the mentor time to greet each other, before his voice rang out once more.
"That concludes this clan meeting." He leaped down from the Tallbranch and prepared to give the orders for the patrols for the day.
SkyClan had admittedly started feeling less like home lately. Since Birdstar’s death, the weight of grief had left Crookedlight drowning. Seeing the vitriol from his classmates surrounding the battle had only made it all worse. And now with the loss of Honeydew, a cat that had been such a bright spot in the clan, the lightness in general has been so…little.
He still performed his duties and attended meetings as a good warrior should, but his heart has felt less and less into the entire thing. Imagine his surprise when, despite feeling like he had not been making a very good showing of himself as a warrior lately, he was still named as Hornetpaw’s new mentor. He blinked a couple of times in disbelief, but he still got to his paws and stepped forward. He leaned down to meet Hornetpaw’s nose with his own. For once stumbling a little over his words, he murmured, “We will begin training tomorrow, okay?”
Hornetkit looked up at his mother with sad, dark brown eyes that were trying their best not to tear up. He laid his forehead against her chest as she played with his ear. Noo... I can't become an apprentice without him. But Mama, don't be sad. He took a deep breath before pulling his face out of her thick fur. "Okay," he mewed with his best attempt to look positive.
The tom-kit turned up toward the Tallbranch, still tucked in his mother's embrace. His face lit up at the call of his name. Hornetkit stumbled forward. His eyes shined with excitement, hoping his dad was proud of him, wherever he was. This was the first step in his journey to serve Skyclan. His tail couldn't help but wag in response to Falconmoon's words. "Hornetpaw!" he cheered along with the rest of his clan.
He, a great new apprentice with his great new apprentice name, turned around to find his great new mentor. Crookedlight... Crookedlight... He didn't want to forget their name. Eventually, a black and white tom parted from the crowd. Hornetpaw reached for his mentor's pink nose. "Okay, Crookedlight!" he rumbled.
