Golden eyes shifted among the camp as a few warriors looked up to meet his gaze. Mere moons ago they had all been stuck to their nests, ravaged by a disease that seemed incurable to him. Now however, they thrived just as they once had. The nursery had burst with kits and refilled the apprentice den at an impressive pace, and even a few new warriors had been named. These past moons had been kind to Shadowclan, and hopefully it would stay that way for the moons to come.
"All cats old enough to silently stalk in the shadows, please gather in the shadow of the Jaggedrock for a Clan meeting!"
At the deputy's call, Briarkit was quick to race toward the jaggedrock from where she'd been sitting near the nursery entrance. Eventually, surely, one of the times he called his clanmates together would be for her ceremony. Even her cousins were starting to become apprentices, and she felt as if she had been waiting for moons and moons and moons for the day to arrive. Still, Briarkit hadn't lost hope, and her pelt was groomed as it usually was as she sat, gazing up at the jaggedrock.
Briarkit was quick to join the tiny group of kits rushing towards the Jaggedrock, each one hoping that today was their day. Unfortunately, many of them would have to live with the disappointment, and perhaps even envy. "Briarkit, please step forward."
"You have reached the age of six moons and are ready to become an apprentice. From this day on until you earn you warrior name you will be known as Briarpaw. Your mentor will be Larkshine. She is a talented young warrior and a proven mentor, may she guide you well." Sablestrike dismounted from the Jaggedrock and began padding towards Willowkit.

Willowkit sat in anticipation as his father called the clan together, his green eyes shining brightly upon the scarred tom as he waited for his name to be called. It was crushing to hear the name that came from him, and the subsequent naming of a mentor. All of his siblings had already become apprentices, and now Briarkit was going to become an apprentice before him too? Did he do something wrong to deserve being a kit for eternity? Willowkit saw his father take a few steps toward him, but turned away quickly. He didn't want to speak to Sablestrike at the moment, and later tonight he'd have to be careful around his nest. He had earned a couple of beetles crawling in there. "Lucky! I can't believe you're an apprentice already, Briar!" All of his friends were quickly leaving the nursery. Just a few more and he'd be completely left behind.
Larkshine made her way to Jagged rock, slower than normal, but faster than most of the other cats. She sat near the front and fixed her vision on Shadowclan’s leader. She wasn’t surprised when he called forward a kit, it was another apprentice ceremony. Her good eye scanned the crowd and noticed all the kits and new apprentices.
It was crazy to think just a few short moons ago she was being made Orchidspark’s mentor. A smile swept across the young molly’s face as she drifted off into her thoughts of that day. It had been the single best day of her life when she was called up to be Orchidpaw’s mentor; it was almost like she could hear Sablestrike’s voice call out her name clear as day. Maybe too clear...
The young molly shook her head, ‘Sablestrike did say my name!’ She thought as she rose to her paws and padded over to her new apprentice. “Hello Briarpaw! I promise we’ll have so much fun together.” Larkshine chirped as she brushed her cheek against the little calico cat. She took a step back and gave Sablestrike a toothy grin, she was so excited to be a mentor again!
Finally! Briarpaw, it felt so strange to hear it said out loud when she'd been thinking about it for moons. Like the warriors had said, here ceremony happened, and the young calico turned toward the warrior named as her mentor, green eyes bright with excitement. Larkshine wasn't the most senior warrior of the clan, but she had trained another cat to the rank of warrior and held that title herself, so clearly she was trustworthy.
"Okay!" She mewed, tail lashing with mingled excitement and anticipation, "I can't wait, Larkshine!"
