Welcome to the fourth Duties & Patrols for 2024! STOATPAW His lip curled in disgust as they approached their border, the stench of ShadowClan wafting over him. He remained on WindClan's side of the border, working his claws into a decaying log as his eyes burned into the distance. He hated ShadowClan - they'd hurt his sister and he had no doubt that they'd try to hurt someone else. Well.
He didn't know the whole story, he just knew that their deputy did something stupid and it ended up with Crakeburn getting injured and somehow getting her warrior name. And then ShadowClan - or RiverClan? He couldn't remember - took one of their lands, simply because they thought they could. And Tigerstar and Sootstorm let them. WindClan was getting weaker by the day!
He wouldn't let ShadowClan see or continue to believe such blasphemy. "We should push the border forward." He suggested to his Clanmates absently, stepping back from the log after he felt his score marks were sufficient. "We've lost territory and we'll have more mouths to feed eventually."

Oatfluff padded up beside Stoatpaw, watching the other side of the border intently. Maybe ShadowClan would come say hello - he wondered how the prey was running, and if any new kits had been born. He didn't have any friends in ShadowClan, but that could always be changed! He was curious how the marsh looked in newleaf. The only glance he ever had into ShadowClan life was this small stretch of pine forest that grew sparse as it turned to moor. Were they happy over there, eating frogs and toads? He couldn't imagine it.
Shock ripped him from his daydream, though, when his younger Clanmate suggested pushing the border. Yikes. He couldn't mean...? Surely not. And yet the smaller tom flexed his claws as though craving battle. "Stoatpaw..." The mottled warrior started, unsure of how to redirect the brash tom without chastising him. He didn't need to start an argument. "That's no way to think. An honorable warrior respects the warrior code, and that includes respecting our borders with other Clans. How would you feel if ShadowClan pushed their side of the border forward? You'd be angry - you'd want to start a fight." He pointed out, looking Stoatpaw over with an even gaze.
"That's how cats - our very own Clanmates and kin - get hurt." He added, his voice urgent. "You're a loyal tom. I'm sure you don't want anyone getting hurt." Though his expression and tone was calm, Oatfluff was alarmed at such a sentiment leaving the lips of such a young cat. Who had put that idea in his head? Pfft - probably Heatherfrost. Still, Oatfluff couldn't help his concern. Surely he wasn't learning that from Sootstorm.
The moor was beautiful - Newleaf has taken up nicely. Cloudypetal didn't realize, upon coming here from the lake, that she had been missing out on this. She padded alongside her clanmates - wondering if they'd see yet another friendly face across the border. She was disappointed when she realized there were none - the apprentices they had met were so sweet.
That was until Stoatpaw suggested moving the border. She was quickly grateful there weren't any ShadowClan warriors in sight. Her ear flicked as she listened to the conversation between Oatfluff and the apprentice, frowning. She was displeased that this was a conversation they were having in the first place.
"Without Sootstorm and Tigerstar's permission?" She mewed, questioning Stoatpaw's motives. "I understand where you're coming from Stoatpaw. But prey is running well. If we pushed the border further there'd be consequences, a battle no doubt. I agree with Oatfluff. Are you hungry for toads and lizards?"
In an attempt to twist the conversation lightheartedly, she released a laugh. "Personally, I'm not sure if I'd be able to stomach a toad."

Cricketpaw loped after his patrolmates, taking in the sights and smells of Newleaf on the moors. The closer they got to the ShadowClan border, the scents and views changed. He kept careful note of it, taking his time to make sure there weren't any signs of recent ShadowClanners crossing the border when they weren't supposed to.
He flicked an ear at Stoatpaw's suggestion but held his tongue until the others were finished speaking. "Oatfluff is right," he mewed quietly, grateful that no ShadowClan cats were around to hear all of that. "I'm sure...if we needed to, Tigerstar an' Sootstorm would make the right decision on what to do about moving borders around. But until that happens, I think it's better if we jus' leave it alone. I don't want innocent cats gettin' hurt, y'know?" Cricketpaw regarded Stoatpaw with a furrowed brow. They had grown up together, been in the nursery together. He had always thought Stoatpaw was a level-headed cat. Was something going on that he didn't know about?
STOATPAW He opened his mouth a second time to object to what Oatfluff had said, but when Cloudypetal and Cricketpaw disagreed as well... His eyes, previously alight with fury and frustration, flashed with guilt. He looked down and away from the patrol, a scowl plastered across his features. Though his tail tip still twitched as the thought to push their borders wasn't a thought he'd given up on, he submitted to his Clanmates' desires.
"You're right." He gritted out forcefully, only to add with a gentler tone. "I'm sorry." Sorry that they disagreed with him and had to witness his brief loss of composure, but not sorry that he brought forward the idea. He was, however, glad of them for standing up to him and cooling his head; his memory hadn't always been the best and it wouldn't do any good to enact revenge upon a Clan that hadn't done anything. Perhaps it had just been a too-vivid dream. "Let's keep going. I promise I won't do anything stupid." But they still deserved more territory.
