Welcome to the second Duties & Patrols for 2024! The rules are simple: post in a posting order, do your duties well, report any problems encountered during the patrol to a leader or deputy, and enjoy! You can’t fix the past, but you can change the future.

Sootstorm shook out the snow in his pelt, fluffing out his fur as best as he could to protect himself from the chilly winds. Sometimes he wished he didn't have such short fur. The snow was rather thick that day, but he would prefer that over half-frozen rock that wouldn't allow him to hold onto his balance no matter what he did. He looked over his shoulder at his companions, the habit of headcounting still ingrained within him. What would normally be a border patrol had turned into a scouting patrol; their job, was to check the lands around them for signs of danger. It wouldn't be ideal for them to accidentally bump into a dog pack halfway through the journey.

Rapidpaw practically skip-hopped behind her dad. She knew this was supposed to be a formal scouting trip but it was hard for her to treat as anything other than an adventure and more time with dad.

She gave a playful glance over her shoulder back to her sister, "keeping up crakepaw?" she purred flicking her tail daring her sibling to come get her.

She had gotten more and more used to Crakepaw's occasional bites and rough play. They hurt sure, but only for a little bit and Crakepaw always seemed to be careful enough not to draw blood
(OOC: at least on Rapidpaw she had been, In character Rapidpaw doesnt know about Heather's ears)

Galestorm was also with them, he was super new warrior and she was glad she would get to know him better here too.
"what are we even looking for again dad?" she meowed innocent as ever. She didn't understand this patrol very much as fun and exciting as it was. Sure, she had been told stories of dogs and wolves but none of it really sank in yet of how dangerous things were. She hadn't ever seen real battle or had that fear yet.

Following behind, Crakepaw had taken to studying her surroundings in particular detail. Her tail stayed high up as she padded about the territory, keeping open ears and eyes for whatever may appear. Her father had given them all a simple task: Keep an eye out for anything suspicious. "I'm making sure we didn't miss anything," She answered to her sister, blinking and instinctively playfully snapping her teeth towards Rapidpaw's tail as she taunted her.

It was unfamiliar land, after all. Well, certainly unfamiliar to her, and by the sounds of it, unfamiliar to the rest of the cats she knew, too. So as such, she didn't want to miss a singular detail.

Galestorm

Galestorm was staying close to the rear of the patrol, partially so he could watch the patrol from all sides and defend if necessary, and partially to make sure Crakepaw didn't fall behind in case she ran into trouble. His whiskers twitched in amusement as he watched the siblings' interactions. As always, it sent him back to a time when he and Cloudypetal were just kits. They had been connected at the hip and did everything together, always getting into all kinds of mischief. He appreciated the playfulness between these fresh members of WindClan.

"Rapidpaw, Crakepaw, what can you smell?" he prompted the apprentices, his jaws parted, bringing in all the scents of the mountain. This will be a fun exercise. Goldengale had tested him this way sometimes, ensuring that his senses were just as trained as his muscles. It would be useful for these apprentices to hone those senses out here while journeying through the mountains.

Sootstorm watched his daughters interact with a proud father's smirk. They reminded him of when he was their age, teasing and playing around with his littermate, Aspenpaw. The mention of his brother made his smile falter for a heartbeat, then it was back, normal and casual as if nothing had happened. The deputy also kept an eye out for Galestorm, pleasantly surprised by the tom's proposal. He'll make a good mentor, the tom thought to himself, and slowed down his pace to let the other three interact. This was a good opportunity to observe the younger tom, and he wasn't about to waste it.

Rapidpaw flicked her tail keeping it just ahead of her sister and - more importantly - just out of her sisters teeth. Although used to being bit from time to time from her rowdy sibling it was not something she wanted to happen often even if she did find her siblings game a bit fun at times. She would much prefer to trick her siblings into tackling them into hugs rather than really fight but was getting more and more used to Heather and Crake's antics and even slightly enjoyed them much more than she had as just a kit.

Rapidpaw blinked at Galestorms question ... smell?

She had been having so much fun with her sister she almost forgot she was supposed to actually be doing something.

She tilted her head hoping to play off how distracted she had just been, "hmmm I dunno" she giggled a little but then actually tried and sniffed a little of the air.

"I smell... she pondered looking about as she sniffed again.

"an amazing sister!" she purred nuzzling and gently head-bonking into Crakepaw's shoulder

At Galestorm's question, the apprentice took the activity to heart, taking a few steps ahead as her nose lifted into the air. As she inhaled deep, her slightly stubby snout lifted to reveal her already-peeking canine just a bit more. She blinked as she did so, trying to decipher all of the smells that came in. A lot of it was from the patrol themselves, the scent she'd come to learn to be that of Windclan causing quite a muddied stir. Beyond that, though, as she sorted things out...

The multicolored apprentice stumbled to the side as her sister gave her a headbutt, and Crakepaw giggled. "I do too, Rapidpaw, but I don't think that's what Galestorm wants us to find!" She gently chided. At least with Rapidpaw, the patterned tabby had a much easier time being kind to her. She was simply too sweet not to, and, well... Fennelbreeze had gotten on her recently for being too mean to her siblings. They weren't all going to be just like her. All of them were different, and individual, and special, and so-forth-from-a-lecture-she-stopped-listening-to-because-mama-had-made-her-point. Still, she gave her sister a slight head-rub back, before going right back to scenting the air.

"I think... there may be some prey in the distance..? A mouse, probably..?"

Galestorm

Galestorm watched, his whiskers twitching with amusement, as Rapidpaw tackled her sister. He shook his head slightly, thinking about how he and Cloudypetal had gotten along when they were younger like that. He could appreciate Rapidpaw's playfulness, and he admired Crakepaw's dedication to her training.

"Yes, that's good, Crakepaw," he commented as he, too, had smelled the mouse. "And you're right, Rapidpaw, I'm sure Crakepaw's scent is rather strong, too," he joked, flashing his teasing amber gaze at the spitfire she-cat. This is kind of nice, he decided. He glanced around from side to side, watching the treeline for movement. "What do you think, Sootstorm? Shall the apprentices get in a bit of hunting practice while we're out here?" It couldn't hurt to bring back a bit of prey, he thought, but I don't know what Sootstorm has planned while we're out here.

Sootstorm held back a purr at Rapidpaw's antics. Despite their differences, they always looked out for each other, a value that he hoped they would never lose. One day they would need it. Galestorm's question plucked him out of his thoughts, and he was about to agree when a thought occured to him. He did not like that thought. Anything that involved Dustpaw, his former apprentice and son, was generaly viewed as a disturbance. He shook his head in response to the young warrior. "We don't know what's out here. If we run into a pack of dogs, I'd prefer if everyone was within my sight," He explained, then looked out at the unfamiliar land that stretched out in the form of irregular hills and sharp formations of rocks that jutted out from the smooth surface of the mountain, a thin and soft blanket of soil covering the land. "We'll head out a little further, then we'll turn back and report out findings to Tigerstar. Remember: we're looking for signs of predators and Twolegs, so that we can warn the rest of the Clan. We are not going to attempt to fight them." The deputy instructed, authority ringing through his voice as he padded forward once more to be at the front of the patrol.
