Larchkit's Apprentice Ceremony

You can’t fix the past, but you can change the future.

There really seemed to be more apprentices lately. Sootstorm couldn't say he was upset that WindClan was growing, but he could tell that the constant ceremonies were starting to wear out his clanmates. His throat, too, seemed to enjoy protesting against his unusually high usage of it, but the uncomfort paled in comparison to the joy he felt each time he named a new apprentice. He took a deep breath before calling out, "Let all cats old enough to run the moors gather around the Tallrock for a clan meeting!"

Surely his apprentice ceremony had to be coming up soon, right? Larchkit had been waiting anxiously around camp, staring longingly out at the territory, knowing that Nectarflower would be on his back if he even tried to leave. All he needed was the right suffix, and then he'd be out in the world! So when Sootstorm called another ceremony, he came out hopefully, settling beneath the Tallrock. He didn't have his mother around to groom him, but thankfully he was pretty good at making sure he looked neat and handsome. Maybe if he looked up at the deputy with a charming enough smile, he'd decide to make it Larchkit's ceremony even if it wasn't.

It didn't take long for him to find the kit who would be made an apprentice that day, and as soon as Larchkit settled down, he began the ceremony. "Larchkit, step forward. You have now reached the age of six moons and are ready to become an apprentice. From now until you earn your warrior name, you will be known as Larchpaw. Nectarflower will be your mentor. I trust she will pass on all she knows to you," He repeated the ceremonial words, finishing his last sentence with a single encouraging nod in his first apprentice's direction. Nectarflower had done a wonderful job mentoring Larchpaw, and he knew that she'd do the same with Larchpaw.

It was with a calm smile that Nectarflower trotted out into the main clearing, her interest piqued by Sootstorm's familiar call. As the many, many kits in the nursery reaches six moons old, the amount of apprentice ceremonies had skyrocketed. There had been several already in the past few days, and, Nectarflower had to admit, she was a little disappointed none of them had been for her. It had been some time since she'd last had an apprentice and, she was aching for another young life to take under her wing, despite how odd it seemed.

Sniffling slightly from the cold, the tortoiseshell she-cat found a place among her clanmates to get settled and tipped her head back to look expectantly up at Sootstorm. It seemed rude to ask herself for another apprentice, but maybe today would be the day? Green eyes bright with curiosity, the warrior listened intently as Sootstorm began the ceremony. Larchkit's name made her jolt with surprise, and she turned to look at the young tom-kit with interest.

Oh, now whoever got to mentor him would no doubt be in for quite the pawful. He wasn't terribly misbehaved, though. At least, not since she'd caught him trying to sneak out of the camp that one time. Memory of the incident made Nectarflower's whiskers twitch with amusement. Of all of the kits, he and his friend, Pipitkit, had certainly made the biggest impression on her - it would be interesting to train either of them. Shooting an encouraging smile the kit's way, Nectarflower returned her attention to their deputy, though it didn't remain there for very long.

She'd been hoping to hear her name called during this ceremony too, but it almost seemed surreal! With a pleased smile, Nectarflower got to her paws and approached her new apprentice, a purr in her throat. "Congratulations Larchpaw!" She meowed enthusiastically. "Ha! What are the odds Sootstorm would make you my apprentice, hm?" Dipping her head, she touched noses with Larchpaw before drawing back to swipe an affectionate lick over the top of his head.

"So! What were you wanting to do first? I usually start with a tour of the territory, but for you, I was thinking we could begin with battle training?" The young tom always seemed full of energy, and, unlike her former apprentices, she wouldn't make the mistake of focusing mostly on hunting. If the terrible accident with the wolves and Goldendale had taught her anything, it was that one couldn't be too prepared when it came to defending yourself.

Larchpaw. The flame-orange calico tabby puffed his chest out proudly at the sound of his new name. He loved it! Then--his mentor? Following shortly after, Sootstorm's voice proclaimed who would be in charge of training him to warriorhood. Nectarflower... the warrior who'd seemed so determined to stop him from going out in the territory. But this time, she'd have to accompany him! A big smile on his face, Larchpaw turned to meet his mentor's eyes and touch noses ceremonially, like he'd watched all the other apprentices do. But before he could do anything else, she licked him on the top of his head. Only Rainberry had ever done that, and he'd squirmed away every time she'd done so. A couple of sensations warred within him briefly, but disgust won out, and he backed away with a grimace. "Ew! Hey, that was uncalled for!" After a moment to shake out his pelt and reorient himself, though, he couldn't help but grin again. "Well, I look forward to training with you anyway. I'm sure you've got a lot of knowledge." His tail swished behind him, and he tilted his head, golden eyes gleaming. "I'll start with whatever you want! Running, hunting, sparring. I just want to go." Where was Pipitkit? Oh, she had to see this! Thank goodness his ceremony had been first.

Nectarflower chuckled softly at Larchpaw's reaction, then blinked apologetically, trying to suppress the amusement that was plain on her face. She hadn't really meant to do that, it was more of a habit than anything, so his annoyance was completely understandable. It had just been a while since she'd had a young cat to look after and even longer since she'd been in the nursery with kits of her own. All of the kit-sitting she'd been doing must be messing with her head.

"Sorry kiddo - force of habit I guess." She said sheepishly. Luckily, the tom didn't seem particularly upset with her and moved on quickly to the subject of his training. He was a good deal more enthusiastic than her last apprentices and certainly more outgoing - it would be interesting to see how they got along. Though, she was certain there was little to worry about. There wasn't a single cat in WindClan that she hadn't gotten along with and she wouldn't be changing that now.

With a playful grin, Nectarflower wrinkled her nose at Larchpaw, tail lashing indignantly. "Plenty of experience? Are you calling me old?" She attempted to plaster on a semi-upset expression, but it didn't last long, crumbling quickly back into a content smile. "I suppose to you, I must be." Then, playful mood dying down, continued in a more serious tone, "But don't worry. I'll let you get settled and, when you're done, come find me for your first day of training, alright?"

Galestorm

Galestorm had been watching the ceremony from his place beside his mother, Morningmoon, and his sister, Cloudypetal, as he always did. Pride beamed in his chest once again as he awaited the announcement, calling out the newest WindClan apprentice's name with all the passion he could summon.

"Larchpaw! Larchpaw!" he yowled, his voice booming throughout the clearing. His amber eyes sought out Nectarflower, his old friend, who had been assigned as Larchpaw's mentor. Larchpaw and Nectarflower quickly engaged in discussing his training, and Galestorm decided to let them go. He brushed past the two of them, purring his congratulations as he assumed his duties around camp.

Dandelionkit

Dandelionkit couldn't help but feel a sense of relief, like a weight lifting off of him, as his denmates gradually began to graduate as apprentices. The nursery was slowly clearing out, so it wasn't quite as crowded or noisy anymore. He only attended these ceremonies because his mother didn't give him any other choice. After the ceremony concluded, he immediately turned on his paws and padded back towards the solitude of the nursery.

Another day, another apprentice ceremony! It was almost to the point of consistency. WindClan is growing. Cloudypetal thought, her chest feeling warm. Good! She took her usual place next to her mother and Galestorm. She shuffled her paws excitedly as she watched Larchkit's ceremony. Her eyes widened in surprise at the mentor - she would have never thought! Nectarflower was an interesting choice for sure.

She immediately joined in on the yowls and celebrations of the clanmates. Larchpaw! Larchpaw! Larchpaw! It felt like the first apprentice ceremony she had ever seen - she was always so excited to celebrate.

However, all surprise at his assigned mentor melted away when she saw them intermingling. They were adorable. Agreeing with Galestorm's approach not to interrupt them, she subconsciously dipped her head to excuse herself and headed off. Time to get busy!
