TOURNAMENT BATTLE #4: Willowpaw vs Sunpaw

Willowpaw hated that she felt ashamed of losing. She knew that not ever cat can succeed in a battle, and Sunpaw genuinely was a good fighter. She lifted her head and offered Sunpaw a quiet, “Good job,” to be a good sport when her mother announced that he was the winner. She hoped her disappointment was not too obvious, in her voice or her eyes.

When her mother leaned down and murmured those gentle words—I’m proud of you—and gave her a maternal lick on her head, Willowpaw’s ears perked up and she looked up at her mother. She felt a warm bloom in her chest. It felt like the disappointment was forgotten. Her mother did not seem to think less of her for losing, and so Willowpaw would not either. She had a brighter look in her eyes now and she walked alongside her mother so the next round of sparring could begin. Her sister was still in the running, after all; she would need the encouragement.
