As the sun continued to rise higher in the sky, the full brunt of its warmth not quite yet on the territory, Perchstar considered the next pairing of cats who would spar. Her beloved daughter, Willowpaw, was well-trained and competent. She ought to be skilled enough to win. However, she was facing Sunpaw... a bright and cheerful tom who Perchstar knew was her daughter's "friend." Maybe it would be difficult for them to fight each other. But maybe not. She'd just have to watch and see. "Remember that I will be supervising you, so there should be no bloodshed or serious injury," she said, the same thing she'd told the other pairs. She could not show any overt favoritism. However, she did meet the silver tabby's eyes for a moment, and offer a quick nod that said everything she didn't need words to say. She was rooting for her daughter. "Ready--set--begin."
The dice determine who goes first. 1, 2, 3= Willowpaw. 4, 5, 6= Sunpaw. Dice rolling....
Sunpaw enjoyed a good spar from time to time, and he loved opportunities to spend time with his fellow apprentices. He gave Willowpaw a big, toothy smile as they settled into place. He was happy his first spar would be with his friend. Even if he lost, Sunpaw would be cheering for Willowpaw on for the rest of the tournament for sure. That won’t stop him from giving it his all, but still! Even if he loses, he’s still winning.
His eyes drifted for a moment as Perchstar set up the spar, searching the crowd for Rookpaw instinctively, before Perchstar gave the announcement to begin. Shaking out his fur, Sunpaw gave one last brief, bright smile before he crouched down and leapt forward onto Willowpaw. They were about the same size height-wise, but Sunpaw was a bit bulkier, so he tried to use that to his advantage. “Gotcha!” He said with a grin.
Sunpaw used Jumping Strike! It deals -9 damage (6 + 3) and costs 7 SP!
Willowpaw stepped forward when she and Sunpaw were called for their battle. She nodded to her mother and then looked back at Sunpaw. She would not hold back against him, even if they are friends. Her attention focused when Perchstar announced the start, and Sunpaw moved first. She saw him leap at her and cry out his victory, but Willowpaw rolled to the side and turned to try and swipe a paw at him instead. Her paw only caught fluffy fur, but she tensed in preparation for his retaliation anyway.
"It seems not," she replied coolly as her mind frantically tried to remember everything Stormdance has taught her.
Willowpaw used Dodge and Fight, costing 7 SP. Counterattack unsuccessful!
Sunpaw was startled when he only landed on soft sand, and he danced away from Willowpaw’s swipe. Then he grinned all over again at Willowpaw’s successful dodge. “Good dodge!” He said with a purr, even as he dove back in and swiped at Willowpaw in retaliation, claws kept carefully in as he batted Willowpaw’s shoulder. Willowpaw really was so cool!
He heard Brookstone’s voice in the back of his head as he moved, encouraging and steady as his body moved on the instinct she’d helped drill into him.
Sunpaw used Front Paw Strike, dealing -6 damage and costing -7 SP!
Willowpaw feels her heart swell with pride when Sunpaw complimented her dodge. She was glad that her training with Stormdance has paid. Sunpaw still got another clip against her, but she could not blame him for that. She then threw herself at Sunpaw, trying to hold him down. When she pinned him down, she purred, “We should spar more. You are a good partner.” It was not often that she got to spar with anyone outside of her mentor.
Willowpaw used Leap and Hold, dealing 6 damage and costing 15 SP. Sunpaw is pinned for 1 turn!

Sunpaw
Riverclan Territory
Sunpaw was briefly so caught up in the joy of both Willowpaw calling him a good sparring partner and Willowpaw purring, which was a very nice sound, to actually remember to fight back. He doesn’t think he’s gotten her to purr before, and it immediately made a rumbling purr fill his chest in response.
Even when he remembered himself enough to attempt to wiggle out of her hold, he’s still grinning wide. “I’d love that!” He purred cheerily. With a grunt of effort, Sunpaw twisted enough to be able to get a hold on Willowpaw and shove her off, dancing out of her reach with a wild grin, adrenaline making his green eyes bright and exertion making him pant. "You're a good partner too," He purred.
Sunpaw is attempting to use Duck and Twist to escape the pin! Success! Sunpaw is no longer pinned. It does -7 damage and cost -5 SP.
Willowpaw winced when Sunpaw easily snuck out from under her. She bit down on her tongue with a bit of frustration, but it was hard to keep disappointed while Sunpaw looked so eager. He was doing really well. Would it be better to forfeit? Was there a way to win this? Maybe...Willowpaw thought there was a way that she could have a chance of winning this spar. Her sister had managed to do it—could she do it too?
She jumped at Sunpaw again before he could try and make an attack on her. She managed to pin him down again and she repeated what she saw Wrenpaw do. Her hind legs batted frantically at Sunpaw's belly and she jumped back, panting hard. Willowpaw was out of breath and wasn't sure how much more she could fight after that...but Sunpaw was still up. She had hoped he would be finished like Larkpaw was against Wrenpaw...Surely she could still managed to win this right...?
Willow used Belly Rake! Success! Dealt 10 damage and cost 25 SP.

Sunpaw
Riverclan Territory
Sunpaw squeaked when Willowpaw leapt onto him, successfully getting underneath him and delivering a blow to his vulnerable underside. He wants to cheer for her good move, but he’s a little too busy frantically regaining his footing when she lets go of him. He’s worn and panting with exertion by now, feeling close to the end of his limit, but he still had some fight left in him. And if he learned anything from Twistpool, it was stubbornness.
Leaping forward, Sunpaw pounced on Willowpaw’s tail, grabbing hold and yanking to pull her off her feet.
Sunpaw used Tail Yank, dealing -7 damage and costing -15 SP! Willowpaw is K.O.d!

Willowpaw
Willowpaw had had some hope that she would be able to finish off this battle. Unfortunately, Sunpaw was quicker and wittier than she was. He got around her before she could turn to face him and she felt a sudden grab of her tail that made her yelp in a rather undignified manner. Heat erupted under pelt. The slight dizziness that came with the tail pull and her own fatigue from her attacks made her crouch down a little bit, silently admitting defeat.
All of this after she had told her mother that Stormdance thought she was almost ready for warriorhood…This definitely proved she wasn’t. She had even performed the same impressive move that Wrenpaw had, but Sunpaw still had outdone her…Willowpaw felt further embarrassment knowing that her sister, who had spent the past moon and a half studying herbs instead of battle, outperformed her. Willowpaw tried to fight that shame, but it burned under her as hot as her embarrassment.

Perchstar watched closely, eyes calm as they followed each and every move, but feeling slightly more invested in this fight than in most of the others. After all, it was her own daughter who was involved. Still--she and her "friend" were very closely matched. Their training levels were even. In the end it came down to who made the first move, and Sunpaw barely managed to outlast Willowpaw. There was a slight twist of worry in the leader's heart as she noticed the disappointment that made her daughter's ears droop. "Good job, both of you," she said, stepping forward quickly to announce that the spar had ended. She shouldn't feel unhappy with Sunpaw for winning; that was what both apprentices were supposed to do. However, she couldn't suppress the irrational swell of dislike when she saw the pain lingering in Willowpaw's eyes. "Sunpaw, go prepare for your next spar."
She waited until the tom had gone to lean down and speak with her daughter, knowing that Willowpaw would likely be embarrassed if anyone else saw. Perchstar's voice was very close to Willowpaw's ear. "I'm proud of you. The fight was close." Once more she glanced around to make sure no one else was near--and then, she gave her daughter a quick lick on the top of her head, a gesture she hadn't shared since they were kits. Not out of a lack of desire to do so, but not knowing when or whether it would be accepted. Hopefully Willowpaw would not think it was shameful.
