It was time for the second spar to begin. The sun had gone a little bit higher in the sky, and birdsong from the distant Beech Copse filled Perchstar's ears as she beckoned the next two apprentices out. The first was Swanpaw, whose mentor had just recently died tragically young from a sickness that no one had expected, but had just been taken under Poppyshine's wing. Another one of the rogue kits adopted into the Clan. Then there was Bubblepaw, whose name was true to her disposition from what the leader had seen. "Remember that I will be supervising you, so there should be no bloodshed or serious injury." Perchstar echoed her warning. She did not believe that any of them would, of course, but it was a warning of safety. "Ready--set--begin."
The dice determine who goes first. 1, 2, 3= Swanpaw. 4, 5, 6= Bubblepaw. Dice rolling....
When a sparring tournament had been organized, Swanpaw had refused to be left out. Most of the other apprentices were further ahead in their training, but that only meant that she'd need to work harder and had more to prove. The challenge was an exciting one, for Swanpaw, and not one she would back down from. Perchstar led her and Bubblepaw out into the territory, and the pale she-cat eagerly followed after them. "I understand, Perchstar." Swanpaw mewed in response to her words, before pale blue eyes turned toward Bubblepaw expectantly. Swanpaw shifted her stance slightly, legs bent so she was a bit lower to the ground as she sized her opponent up.
"Hey-" Swanpaw sputtered indignantly as her tail was pulled, throwing her off balance. The apprentice twisted, managing to stay on her paws as she turned to face her opponent with a glint in her eye. Not waiting, Swanpaw struck out with a paw, hoping that she'd be able to connect with Bubblepaw's fur in turn.
Swanpaw used Random Recall for -5 sp and is no longer stunned. Swanpaw used Front Paw Strike for -7 sp, dealing -6 damage.
Walk like a majestic lion, eyes glinting with so much desire.
Bubblepaw gasped in shock once Swanpaw's paw connected with her fur. Instinctively, she used her head to push the other apprentice back and create more space between them.
bubblepaw used "headbutt" on swanpaw, dealing 4 damage and costing 5 stamina.
bubblepaw hp - 14/20 sp - 40/60
swanpaw hp - 9/20 sp - 48/60
Pour more gasoline on fire, fly again, rising through the flames.
Being headbutted was... Unexpected. It wasn't the worst thing Bubblepaw could have done, of course, and Swanpaw wasn't out of this fight yet. Forcing herself to move, Swanpaw fired back to a flurry of paw strikes, being careful that her claws remained sheathed.
Swanpaw used Desperate Blows and Front Paw Strike for total -10 sp, dealing -10 damage.
Bubblepaw dudged, and Swanpaw let out a frustrated hiss, tail lashing as she eyed the other apprentice. Her counterattack had missed, though... And Swanpaw was determined to win. She darted low, aiming to slide under Bubblepaw's belly. Perhaps the move was a risky one, but Swanpw wanted to be the victor of this spar. She was confident that she could pull this off, despite the risk.
The risk did not pay off. "Foxdung!" Despite Swanpaw's competitiveness, there was maybe just a little hint of laughter in her voice too. How could she have messed up this badly? Panting, she clambered back to her paws.
Bubblepaw blinked in shock as Swanpaw made the next move. She was surprised that the apprentice would take such a risk, but she respected it as well. Taking risks would only make her better in the future. She didn’t have time to think any further, she had to make her next move. She spun around to face her opponent and reached her paw out in an attempt to finish this spar.
”Sorry!” Bubblepaw called out, panting from the effort, “That was a good fight, though!”
Bubblepaw used front paw strike, dealing 6 damage and costing 7 stamina.
Another paw, and Swanpaw huffed, gazing at her sparring partner. She'd lost clearly, and could feel the fatigue setting in... And it stung. A little. Bubblepaw had been the better fighter this time. Next time, though... Next time Swanpaw would win. She just had to focus on her training and improve.
Perchstar watched the fight closely. Thankfully both participants remained completely fair, and claws were never unsheathed, so she never had to step in. It was close until Swanpaw made a risky move which unfortunately didn't succeed. Bubblepaw capitalized on it, and the fight was over. Both apprentices were skilled. They would likely grow into strong and well-trained warriors. Perchstar couldn't help but feel reassured by the proficient fighting techniques she'd seen used in all of the spars so far. "Good job, both of you," she told them, stepping forward with a nod. "Bubblepaw, congratulations. You should start preparing for your next spar."
