Sunflare was almost giddy as he led his small patrol to the clearing, though he didn’t allow his dignified exterior to crack. He was taking his mate and their apprentices hunting! Tonight was perfect, and he put the drama with Nightpaw and WindClan out of his mind for now.
Tawnyshadow followed behind her mate, Beetlepaw at her heels. Sunflare's mood had improved noticably since he had gotten an apprentice of his own, and this would be the first time she would be able to asses the progress of Hawkpaw's training. A win-win situation, plus extra practice for Beetlepaw to finish up the rest of their training.

A pleasantly warm breeze ruffled Beetlepaw's fur as they followed behind Tawnyshadow, absent mindedly chatting with the other apprentice that had joined them. The night was delightfully calm, they felt at ease as they padded through the marshes. The flickering of passing fireflies repeatedly caught their eye, temporarily taking their attention before they were drawn back in by some point of conversation.

Hawkpaw walked calm and quiet beside his mentor. He couldn’t help the way his head kept swiveling to and fro, nose and whiskers twitching constantly at all the new stimuli washing over him. The territory was so much bigger, so much more wondrous than he ever imagined, and even though he kept getting mud in his white fur, Hawkpaw found himself fascinated every time he stepped outside the confines of the camp walls he’d been trapped in as a kit. The pine grove smelled so sharp and intense, and Hawkpaw’s head tilted back to take in the pine branches hanging low above his head.
He only hoped he’d do well on this patrol. The last thing he wanted was to let down his mentor, or embarrass himself in front of his clanmates. He had to become a warrior and prove himself. He could hunt for his clan. He’d do well. He would. At least, if Hawkpaw repeated that to himself enough times, maybe he’d believe it. He responded softly to the fellow apprentice, Bettlepaw, quiet and reserved. He wasn't sure what to say in total, so he largely let them lead the conversation. He studied the other members of the patrol with just as much curiosity as the territory around them as he walked and spoke. He followed Bettlepaw's gaze to the fireflies when they faltered in conversation, tilting his head as they passed by the flickering bugs.
As they reached their destination, Sunflare stopped and turned. “All right, toms, she-cats, and everyone in between, tonight we will be hunting, both to hone our skills and provide for the clan. Hawkpaw, you will be learning the basics. Beetlepaw, I trust you already know, and Tawnyshadow, I’ve seen you hunt. You’re fabulous. All right, young one. Watch and learn.” With that, Sunflare dropped into his hunting crouch and began to explain. “It’s harder when you have long legs like I do, but the key is to stay low to the ground. Note how every paw is placed expertly, and the tail does not drag. Knowing where every part of your body is at all times will ensure complete silence as you stalk your prey. Now we scent.” Sunflare could already detect the faint trail of a mouse and he began to move towards it.
Sunflare intentionally made a few errors, letting his tail brush a bush as he got close and hissing a little as he pounced. He ended up catching his prey, but only after a brief lightning-speed chase. As he returned with his catch, he turned to Hawkpaw. “I hope you noticed a couple of errors in my performance. Go ahead and make your own attempt. See if you can avoid my pitfalls.”

Tawnyshadow watched as Sunflare showed his apprentice how to hunt for a while, then turned away to do her own hunting. Her mate was already showing that he was a capable mentor, and she wanted to see how he would progress. Maybe he could even teach her a few new things. She signaled for Beetlepaw to scent the air and begin hunting. She might as well put this session to good use and see if her apprentice truly was ready for warriorhood.

When the patrol came to a stop, Beetlepaw raised their head as Sunflare addressed their plans for the evening. Hunting. The apprentice watched as the older tom began explaining how to hunt to Hawkpaw. Lost, they looked to Tawnyflare for some kind of signal, which, to their delight, they received. Exchanging a nod with their mentor, Beetlepaw parted from the group, making sure that they were far enough away that they could no longer hear Sunflare's voice before they began searching for a scent. They didn't want their training session to startle any potential fresh-kill.
After catching the scent of a lizard, Beetlepaw slowed their pace, allowing their sense of sound to take over. The skittering of feet on mud reached their ears, and after following the sound, they were able to make out the lizard through the darkness. Crouched a few fox-lengths away, they braced themself to pounce. Following a deep inhale, they pushed themself from the soft earth, paws stretched for the reptile in front of them. Within a heartbeat, they had they jaws closed around it, and it went limp.
Beetlepaw has attempted to catch lizard, costing 3 SP. Attempt was successful!
Beetlepaw: 57/60 SP [-03]

Tawnyshadow nodded in approval as Beetlepaw hunted down and killed the lizard with the effeciency and grace of a proper warrior. They would be made a warrior soon, no doubt about that. Seeing as there was nothing else she could do for her apprentice, the warrior began searching for her own prey-scent, but not before signaling for Beetlepaw to do the same. She soon found the familair scent of a rabbit, and within heartbeats she was a tail-length away, ready to pounce. With easy grace gained only through moons of practice, Tawnyshadow leapt forward, cutting off the prey's cry before it could even be uttered. She stood up, limp rabbit in her jaws, then turned to check on the status of her apprentice.

Hawkpaw pulled his gaze from the territory around them to focus completely on Sunflare, staring at him with wide, golden eyes. He absorbed his mentor’s words with intense focus, his twitching tail the only thing giving away that he was not simply an ice replica of a cat. He studies Sunflare’s hunting crouch, watching him move forward. When Sunflare returned, Hawkpaw looked between the prey and Sunflare as he said, “Okay.”
His heart was pounding in his chest. He didn’t want to make a fool of himself. He turned forward, paws flexing before he carefully lowered himself into a hunting crouch. He adjusted until it felt right, until he was certain he’d copied Sunflare’s movements as well as he possibly could, and he crept forward carefully, sniffing the air for signs of prey. His eyes narrowed into golden slits when he caught the whiff of a nearby frog.
Keeping in mind the mistakes he spotted with Sunflare, the wayward tail and noise, Hawkpaw approached carefully and quietly before wiggling and leaping forward in a pounce. Unused to the movements, when he leapt forward, he stumbled a little bit and nearly didn't land right. Still, after a split second recovery, he righted himself enough to latch his claws into the frog just as it began to leap away, and he dragged it close to finish it off. Not a clean hunt, but successful nonetheless. Hawkpaw scooped the frog up and returned to Sunflare, setting it down. Part of him felt a small spark of pride, but most of him was obsessing over the mistake. "I stumbled when I jumped." He said, wanting to let Sunflare know that he recognized his own mistake.
Sunflare purred with pride. “Good work, Hawkpaw. You moved with the grace of a warrior until that last second. Don’t worry about stumbling, it was your first try after all. You still performed exceptionally well.”
