Cloud's Luck[Open]

Cloudypaw's eyes narrowed, focused solely on the shrew tail lengths away that he failed to notice the creature in the trees that was focused solely on him. The white tom sprang forward, claws outstretched to catch the shrew. Wings flapped, talons flashed, and a huge owl came down on him in one swoop. The tom shrieked as talons ripped at his face, falling to the ground to wrap his paws around his ears. Blood poured down his face, turning the snow-white fur on his face red. Cloudypaw gasped, stumbling away from the owl. He unseathed his claws, and lunged forward at the owl. "You'll pay for this!" He screeched, claws digging into the bird's wing and thrusting it to the ground.

The sudden scent of blood filled Ridgecrest’s nose, and the brown tabby whirled around from where he’d been hunting down a mouse. A howl from close by, the sound of frenzied pain, and Ridgecrest burst through the bracken, bellowing a war cry as he threw himself towards the owl. The apprentice- Cloudpaw, if he remembered correctly- his white fur was stained crimson with blood. Stars above, this was not good.

The brown tabby slammed the owl to the ground, biting down and sinking his sharp claws into the bird’s fluffy feathers. He could handle an owl; what he was worried about was the young apprentice. “Back off, ‘paw,” he hissed through a mouth full of bloody feathers. “I can handle this.”

In a flash of ginger fur, a third cat joined the fray. Blazefang slammed into the owl with every bit of force and speed in her body. She’d lost enough kits. Nothing would take her son from her again.

Copperlark heard the sound of screeching and instantly headed towards the noise. She stopped at the edge, hidden by the ferns while she watched the scene unfold. Cloudypaw was fighting an owl. The entire left side of his face was dripping with blood. He looked angry and scared, the latter an emotion she had never seen on his face. Blood splattered the fern's fronds beside her when Ridgecrest attacked the bird. Copperlark viewed the entire scene with a face of disinterest.

Disconnected. That's how she felt. The pain in her kin's cries barely registered in her head. Was she supposed to care? Blazefang joined the mess. Cloudypaw was a screaming cloud with half his head red. Her paws felt oddly heavy, like pebbles that wouldn't move. Copperlark starred at the scene. I want to help. I want to help him. He's my brother. Over and over she reasoned with herself, trying to get herself to move. And yet not a bit of panic rose in her. Not a flash of worry, nor a wave of anger. Did she even want to help her brother, or was it all for show? The she-cat stood there, hidden by the ferns, while she watched the look of agony on Cloudypaw's face. Maybe I don't care, and that's okay...

Snap. Her paws moved at last, crushing a twig in the process. Copperlark lunged forward to strike the owl. Her claws sliced through the bird's wing, but it was weird. Heavy. Like slicing through mud. She quickly retracted her paw, eyes wide. So that was how it felt to tear through flesh... it was both a weird and disgusting feeling, like squashing a bug under a paw.

Cloudypaw laid on the ground. His whole face felt as if it was on fire. Where was the rest of the patrol? Ridgecrest, Blazefang, anyone? His single eye darted to the ferns. A cat stood behind the ferns, watching the scene. Copperlark? What was his sister doing? Do something! His body jerked, blood splattering the grass around him. Why was Copperlark just standing there?

Blurry figures rushed past him as the world tipped to the side. There was more screeching, followed by the rustling of wings. His world was already fading to black, and the last thing he saw was a grey-and-cream cat lunging at the bird.
