Sootstorm gently nudged Nectarpaw awake. The sun was just rising, and most of the clan were still asleep. "Wake up, Nectarpaw, it's time for your first training session," He whispered softly before slipping out of the apprentice's den.

Nectarpaw, curled into a tight little ball in her new nest in the apprentice's den, was sleeping fitfully and dreaming of chasing rabbits. The young she-cat twitched in her nest, then rolled over with a dissatisfied huff.

Suddenly, a paw nudged her awake. Nectarpaw jolted, then looked around, trying to find the offending paw. It was probably one of the other apprentices moving around in their sleep. Who else would be up this - Oh! It was Sootstorm! The tortoiseshell she-cat clambered to her paws, her eyes glittering in the pre-dawn light.

Her first training session! This was so exciting! The apprentice twisted her head to give a few good licks to her messy pelt. It would have to do! There was no point making Sootstorm wait.

Nectarpaw picked her way around and over her denmates, careful not to step on or disturb them. Finally, she slid out of the den and into the clearing, nearly bumping into Sootstorm on the way. Woah! That was a close one! With barely a moment to spare, Nectarpaw danced to the side, barely avoiding a collision.

Now THAT...would be embarrassing.

After waiting a moment to let her fur lie flat again, Nectarpaw peered up at her mentor, her tail lashing. She dropped hew meow to a whisker and grinned. "What're we gonna do first! I'm so so so excited!" As if that wasn't already obvious

Sootstorm couldn't hide his smile when he caught sight of the apprentice's eager expression. "We're going to start with fighting first," He responeded. Normally, mentors would teach their apprentices hunting skills first, since it was used more often, but with the tension between Windclan and the other clans Sootstorm would sleep better at night if he knew Nectarpaw could hold her own, even if only against another apprentice.

[Time skips because I'm lazy]

They arrived at the location he had picked out. The flat clearing had a few trees around, a bit more than the rest of the territory, which was the closest he could find to match the other clans' territory. "Okay, we'll start with the Front Paw Strike," Sootstorm began. He raised a paw and swiped at the air. "Like that. You can rear up if you think you can't reach, but you'll have to be quick because you'll reveal your belly," Sootstorm explained, then waited patiently for Nectarpaw to try it out for herself.

Nectarpaw nodded alertly, content with Sootstorm's choice.

She would have preferred to go on a tour of Windclan's territory, but this was alright too. She'd just have to explore with Fernpaw. Which reminded her! Fernpaw promised to take her to some...flower fields - or something - when she became an apprentice. So that was another thing to look forward to!

Now, however, it was time to focus on the task at paw. Nectarpaw smiled slightly. "Okay! With you as my mentor, I'm gonna be the best warrior in Windclan!" Was she sucking up? Yeah, just a little.

Nectarpaw looked around curiously, taking in all of the sights and sounds of the open moor. She'd only ever seen it from a distance, but standing in it with the wind blowing in her fur...it was amazing!

The she-cat quickly tried to reign in her excitement and focused her attention on Sootstorm as he demonstrated something called a front paw strike. It didnt look too difficult...but then again, Nectarpaw had been wrong before.

Alright! Yeah! Let's see..." The tortoiseshell narrowed her eyes in concentration and tried to mimick Sootstorm. She aimed for a similar height as Sootstorm, which was probably her first mistake.

Nectarpaw underestimated the distance and though the swipe itself was alright the rest was...not. She lurched forward, temporarily losing her balance, and dropped her paws to catch herself.

That could've gone better. It definitely could've been worse though. The young she-cat peered up at Sootstorm, somewhat embarrassed. "Um. Could you show me again maybe? I'm not sure what I did wrong."

Nectarpaw's attempt was good; her strike was quick, and from the looks of it landed close to where she was aiming. When apprentice lurched forward, Sootstorm instinctively stepped forward to help support the she-cat. Once he was confident that Nectarpaw was fine, the warrior showed her once again how it was done. His paw lashed out again, slower this time, and retracted just as quickly. "It was a good first attempt; no one was expecting you to get it right the first time. I certainly didn't," Sootstorm assured the tortoiseshell. "As for what you did wrong... you didn't have a firm stance on the ground, and you put all your weight into the blow. When you striked, your own paw caused you to become unbalanced and that's how you fell," He explained.

"Here, try it on me. Facing a real-life cat might help you estimate the distance," Sootstorm suggested.

Nectarpaw nodded slowly, scuffing her paw on the pebbly soil as Sootstorm spoke. Knowing that he didn't get it right his first try either definitely made her feel better about herself. She wasn't sure why she'd assumed she was the first to mess up a move like that, how silly!

The smile returned to her face and she placed all of her paws firmly on the ground. Balance, right. That was probably important for...pretty much everything. Which was odd to her - tumbling around was so fun!

Regardless, she couldn't defeat enemies in battle by falling around. The most she would probably get accomplished is confusing them. The thought made her snicker. "Okay! I'm ready this time!" Her green eyes fixed onto Sootstorm's body, determination glittering in her gaze. She'd get it right this time!

Spreading her back paws a bit to make sure she didn't make the same mistake, Nectarpaw edged closer to Sootstorm, preparing to strike out, with sheathed claws, of course.

The she-cat hesitated, wondering if she was supposed to smack him for real, or fake attack him.

After a moment of consideration, Nectarpaw pounced, landing right in front of Sootstorm before she batted her paw against his chest with her claws sheathed. She remembered to balance herself properly this time, and with a real target, it did seem a lot easier!

Nectarpaw used front paw strike on Sootstorm, dealing 6 damage at the cost of 7 stamina.

"Very good!" Sootstorm praised as the blow landed on him. Ouch. But that's a good thing! "Now try to dodge," He instructed Nectarpaw, then raised his paw and lashed out. There wasn't much force behind the blow, but it was certainly fast.

Nectarpaw felt pleasure bubble up in her chest at Sootstorm's praise. Thank Starclan! She had been worried for a moment there that she was doomed to be the most clumsy cat in Windclan! Puring loudly, the apprentice paused to thank her mentor when he called out for her to dodge. What, dodge what?

Suddenly, she saw his paw coming straight for her. With very little time to react, she ducked below Sootstorm's outstretched paw with a soft gasp of surprise. She had expected to feel the blow of his attack on her chest or shoulder, but she had somehow managed to dodge it alltogether. Chest puffed out, Nectarpaw spun around to face the warrior once more.

Now beside him, Nectarpaw had the perfect opportunity to attack! Planting her paws firmly, she lashed out with a sheathed paw, her sights set on Sootstorm's flank. It was a larger target than his shoulder or head and with her tail swaying to help her keep her balance, Nectarpaw's attack connected with Sootstorm.

Letting out a small purr of joy, Nectarpaw retracted her paw and watched Sootstorm closely for his next attack.

Nectarpaw used dodge and fight dealing 5 damage at the cost of 7 stamina.

"Very good!" Sootstorm purred when his paw landed on soft grass. Nectarpaw managed to land a blow on him as well, something that even he had problem with sometimes. His apprentice really was talented... or was it just that he was a good mentor? Whatever the case, it is time for Nectarpaw to learn her next move. His paw lashed out to bat at the apprentice's nose, but swift as a snake another paw lashed out to catch her shoulder. "That's a move only Windclan cats can do, because all the other clans are too slow. Now you try," Sootstorm instructed.

Sootstorm used Front Paw Strike and Swift Strike, dealing 8(+5)dmg and -7(+10)SP

Nectarpaw, caught up in the afterglow of her success, didn't notice Sootstorm's paw headed straight for her face. She stumbled back, frightened, as his paw batted her nose then tipped slightly when he landed a blow on her shoulder. One right after the other! How did he do that!

She quickly found her balance, not wanting to repeat her near fall from earlier, and tried to focus on Sootstorm's explanation. Stars! Her shoulder was kind of sore from his second attack.

Regardless, she had to give this spar her all! Determined, Nectarpaw nodded and the moment the word 'try' left Sootstorm's mouth, she pounced at him, cuffing him on the side of his head with one paw, then lashing out with the other to catch the other side of his face - claws still sheathed of course.

Since he'd opened up the option to attack the face, she was going to take full advantage of that!

Though, she was starting to feel a little worn down now. Depending on how hard Sootstorm hit her on his next attack, she might have to tap out of this spar.

Regardless of that, Nectarpaw was pretty proud of how well she'd done thus far. Sootstorm's praise made her feel all warm and happy inside - she couldn't wait to boast about her new skills to the other apprentices!

Sootstorm purred as Nectarpaw attempted the move perfectly. No doubt about it, his apprentice was talented! Would he be rushing things if he showed her another move? Probably. Nectarpaw might not be able to take on another warrior yet, but maybe she could hold her own if joined by another clanmate. As long as she can keep herself alive in a fight. That was all that he asked for at the moment: to keep his friends alive, as long as possible.

"Okay, just a little longer!" Sootstorm encouraged. Nectarpaw seemed pretty tired, but stamina was important, especially in battle. She would have to slowly train that as well. His paw lashed out, gently tapping the she-cat on the nose. This wasn't so much as deal damage as test Nectarpaw's stamina. He wanted to see just how long the apprentice could go.

Nectarpaw panted her body sore from Sootstorm's strikes. She reared back as his paw lashed out, but she wasn't fast enough to avoid the smack to her nose. The she-cat snorted and shook her head, almost annoyed that he kept tapping her on her snout.

However, she nodded, determined to get in at least one last strike.

Heart beating wildly in her chest, Nectarpaw lashed out with a paw and caught Sootstorm in the chest. Without waiting for him to respond, she reared up and batted at him several times with soft blows. She didn't have a lot left in her and she knew that her mentor was going easy on her, but that wouldn't stop her from giving it her all! She needed to prove herself!

The tortoiseshell apprentice dropped back onto her paws, her sides heaving as she tried to regain her breath. She couldn't recall a time that she'd worked so hard in her life! Being an apprentice sure was tough.

Green eyes landed on Sootstorm and Nectarpaw eyed him warily, waiting for his next move. She knew for a fact that she'd be down for the count after this.

Nectarpaw used Front Paw Strike and Desperate Blows dealing 6 (+4) damage at the cost of 7 (+7) stamina.

Sootstorm could tell that Nectarpaw was tired, but just because a warrior was tired didn't mean that they could just stop fighting the enemy and go back to camp to rest. Sorry, Nectarpaw, just a little more... the tom stepped back from his apprentice's attack, his paw lashing out to try and catch an opening while he did.
