Subject: Whisper on the Wind [Whisperear] Tue 27 Sep 2022 - 15:54
She'd been meaning to catch up with Whisperear, especially after everything that had happened recently. Awkwardness and a lingering sense of anger towards Daisybreeze, and confusion over the entire nonsensical situation, had stopped her. Whisperear had offered to go hunting with her, and as the two left camp the young warrior was glad that her paws had something to do. Talking had never been her strong suit, and having something else to focus on made it a little bit easier.
"Are you alright, after...?" She began hesitantly, doubting very much that Whisperear would be happy about being reminded of Daisybreeze's foolishness, but at the same time, Whisperear was a... friend. They at least deserved her concern, even if it was difficult to show.

Whisperear
Whisperear was happy to be out of camp and in the company of a good friend. They’d been restless at home for a while now. Every time they spotted Daisybreeze, there was a small spike of anger that they felt which curled around their heart. They didn’t like it, but it had become almost commonplace after a week or two since the incident. It almost felt…normal. And that in itself was strange.
Their large ears twitched when Brackenwing began to speak, but her words were quickly swallowed up by more silence. Whisperear knew what she was talking about, of course. It was the only thing on their mind, and seemingly the only thing on anyone’s mind when they were around them. Whisperear couldn’t blame them, but it was still…frustrating. It often felt like they had to justify their actions—even to cats that were on their side.
Whisperear took a deep breath. “I am still irritated at Daisybreeze. But ultimately—yes, I’m alright.”
Whisperear was different. It was a change that Whisperear had not quite identified in themselves, but was clearer to other cats looking at them. They moved a little swifter, their muscles a little tightened at all times. Their expression, which was usually a passive, almost dissociative expression, was almost set into a scowl more times than not. What Daisybreeze said was always rolling around in their mind. They couldn’t shake it off.
“I don’t want to cause problems,” Whisperear added. Their continuation surprised even them. “But I can’t let go of it. Daisybreeze just…” They hesitated before ultimately shaking their head. They didn’t know how to put any of it into words. It was just jumbled feeling in their chest.

Irritated, which was clear even to Brackenwing, but also alright. It was an answer she might've given herself. She couldn't tell how true the last part was, though Whisperear had never been the lying sort, and did appear to be alright. It made Brackenwing feel a little better, that her friend at least seemed to be okay.
"You're not causing problems." Brackenwing reasoned, "She was out of line. For yelling at Batsong and... whatever that fight between you was. I don't believe you were the one who started it." She shook her head, "I don't understand what she must've been thinking. Or... not thinking, I guess." She'd only heard of it second-paw, and was still not quite sure that she could wrap her head around it fully. Clanmates attacking clanmates was something that should never have happened to begin with. Regardless of the reasoning - however flimsy that reasoning must've been.
"Yeah... I don't think I'd be able to either, I mean..." Brackenwing huffed. "It was wrong of her, and you're not obligated to just act like nothing happened."

Whisperear
Brackenwing agreed with them…that reassured Whisperear and put them a little more at ease. Yeah…Daisybreeze was in the wrong, and Whisperear didn’t have to forgive her or pretend like it didn’t happen. It was…nice, knowing that this didn’t have to just be swept away because she received punishment.
Whisperear took a deep breath and relaxed, a little bit of the tenseness in their muscles releasing. “Thank you, Brackenwing. That’s reassuring,” they murmured. They lifted heir nose into the air and took a deep breath. There was no use in lingering so long on this, and they should instead get to hunting like they were planning. Whisperear was not terribly confident in their ability to catch prey, especially as the air was growing colder and leaf-fall arrived. They only hoped that they could catch something for the sake of their clan.
They smelled a rabbit not too far down the moor, so they headed in that direction. They saw it nibbling away at some grass and they crept towards it, keeping low to the ground until they could leap at it—only for a hawk to have the same idea as it came crashing down. The rabbit was alerted and took off, leaving Whisperear right in line for the hawk, and its talons tore into them. Whisperear gave a yowl of pain and swiped at the hawk deliriously. What a pain! Could Whisperear partake in a single hunting patrol without a predator spawning in?
Whisperear attempted to catch a rabbit…and failed! Predator encountered! Hawk used Swoop, dealing 9 damage and costing 15 SP. Whisperear used Front Paw Strike, dealing 8 damage and costing 7 SP.

Brackenwing ducked her head, ear twitching at Whisperear's thanks. "Let's see if we can bring back some prey." Whisperear seemed to be of the same mindset, already searching. Brackenwing did the same, green eyes finding a hare in the grass a distance away.
Whisperear had gone after their own prey, and Brackenwing had hardly moved a few foxlengths toward the hare when her clanmate's yowl made her whip around. For Whisperear, that had been loud. That meant trouble. Once again, trouble seemed to have taken the form of a hawk.
"Foxdung," She muttered, rushing forward to meet the hawk with unsheathed claws. Brackenwing had the advantage of not having the typical smaller, more lithe build of a Windclan cat, and in fights it was helpful to more easily keep an opponent down, even if she might not have been the fastest warrior around. She leaped toward the bird now, aiming to tackle it to the ground with unsheathed claws and keep it there.
Brackenwing used Leap and Hold on hawk for -15 sp, dealing -10 damage. Hawk is pinned for ?

Whisperear
The hawk shrieked and struggled under Brackenwing, but a bird was not built to fight so easily against a cat, and was unable to force itself out of her grip.
Whisperear was relieved to see that Brackenwing had the bird easily under control. They continued to slash at it, blood welling onto the grasses as the hawk continued to shriek and struggle. Whisperear commented, “This is going even better than our first time fighting a hawk together."
Hawk is pinned! 1/2. Whisperear used Front Paw Strike, dealing 8 damage and costing 7 SP.

"Don't say that till it's over." Brackenwing replied, using her weight to keep the hawk pinned as she raked her claws through its flesh. Whisperear was right, though, the hawk had lost blood and was quickly weakening, despite the noise it was making. The fight would be over soon enough.
Brackenwing continued Leap and Hold for -15 sp, dealing -10 damage. Hawk pinned 2/2.

Whisperear
Whisperear nodded, knowing that Brackenwing was right. They glanced towards the sky, almost nervous that reinforcements would show up, but the sky was clear. They looked back down and raked their claws down the hawk’s side. It offered up one last choked squawk before it crumbled beneath Brackenwing and stopped moving.
They let out a breath and stepped back, waiting for a moment before relaxing fully. “The feathers are probably a good thing to have as leaf-fall has arrived.” They shook out their pelt. There were a few scratches, but nothing that they couldn’t handle. “It won’t really work for proper food, though…Did we want to bury it for now and try to catch some actual prey?”
Whisperear used Front Paw Strike, dealing 8 damage and costing 7 SP. The hawk is dead!

With a final squawk and the rake of Whisperear's claws, the hawk fell limp. Brackenwing kept it pinned until it stopped moving, and stepped back, glancing up at her pale-furred clanmate. "You good?" She was no medicine cat to tell the extent of his injuries, and she knew from experience how sharp hawk talons could be. "Nest-lining would be nice." She agreed, glancing briefly at the hawk. It seemed like there was plenty still salvageable, despite the clawing it had received.
"We should bring back more than just a hawk, though the squawking has probably scared off any sensible prey around here. Let's stash it and move on."

Whisperear
Whisperear sat down so they could catch their breath. They licked their fur clear of smeared blood from the hawk’s talons. “I’m alright,” they promised. A few scratches and they would probably sleep well tonight, but it was nothing that needed them to go back immediately. The thought of getting more to bring back was a good one, and once they cleared off the majority of blood from their pelt, they moved to dig a hole.
“You go on and hunt while I bury this. I fear I will attract another hawk’s attention,” they joked as they dragged the hawk by the tail into the shallow hole to be stashed away. They would try their hand at catching a rabbit again, but Brackenwing was the superior hunter, and if she went off first then they would guarantee at least one catch.

Brackenwing nodded once in acknowledgement of Whisperear's words, and turned. Hopefully her clanmate wouldn't attract another hawk, but if it happened, they would fight the thing off like warriors. Brackenwing wouldn't let a predator attack her clanmates without stepping in to help defend them.
"Rabbit," She mewed softly to Whisperear, then slunk forward in the direction the breeze was blowing the scent from. She spotted the brown-furred creature soon enough, and gingerly made her way toward it, trying to stay behind and downwind as much as she could. Brackenwing wasn't the fastest in Windclan, but she'd had success with hunting when she managed to get closer to her targets. Muscles bunching, the marbled tabby leapt forward, claws catching in the rabbit's pelt. She closed her jaws around it, cutting off a squeal of alarm from the rabbit, and turned, padding back toward Whisperear.

Whisperear
Whisperear finished burying the bird and looked back to where Brackenwing had taken off. They smiled when they saw her easily capture the rabbit, and Whisperear nodded in affirmation when she returned. Hopefully Brackenwing capturing a rabbit would be the good luck they needed. They stretched out their limbs and smelled another rabbit not far from where Brackenwing had claimed hers. While she was burying her own rabbit, they moved down the hill and into the grasses, prowling up on the rabbit that they set their eyes on. Their joints were stiff from the recent battle and they were more out of breath than they realized as they tried to approach silently and carefully. Their clumsy movement alerted the rabbit who took off like a bullet. They attempted to run after it, but it reached its burrow long before Whisperear could grasp its tail.
They panted for air and took a minute to recover from the sprint. They silently cursed themselves again. It felt like more than half their patrols always ended in finding no prey. They wished that they could be more helpful in that regard.
Quietly, they padded back to Brackenwing, with nothing to show but their exhaustion.
Whisperear attempted to catch a rabbit. They were…unsuccessful! -3 SP.
