No matter how hard she tried, Aoife could not stop the events from Skyclan camp replaying in her head. Today, she had decided to try and hunt to take her mind off of things, but was evidently failing, just like it always did. A flash of claws, the blood, not only from Smokefeather, but also pouring from her father's throat, an unnatural thing of the shadows and dark. Each time, she couldn't help but wonder: would she be able to do the same? Even if the whole order's life was on the line, would she have the strength bring the blow down on her own kin.

The air was warming, and prey new it. More and more started to emerge, the harsh season beginning to fade away. Aoife had only ever known the cold, frost and snow, but she was eager to see the seasons shift. Despite the plentifulness of prey, when a mouse scurried past, the guard was still too lost in her head to react fast enough. It disappeared into the hay, leaving only its scent behind.

Now properly focussed, Aoife started to search for prey amongst the hay and nests. The bedding gave shelter to prey as well as cats, and the small creatures were growing more and more confident in the warm weather. Before long, she had located another rodent, this time a shrew, and crouched down. She'd learnt how to hunt young, and the technique had stayed firmly with her, even if other things in her life had changed drastically.

She stalked it carefully, each paw placed perfectly on the on the clear ground. Her skills had improved over the moons, and were much more tidy than they used to be. After such a difficult leaf-bare, getting better was the only way to eat. With a single pounce, she trapped the shrew, killing it quickly with her jaws and burying it where she stood.

Moving on, Aoife started to venture further out of the barn, interested in finding some different kinds of prey. Prey like squirrels would soon start waking from their sleeps, and a larger animal fed more. Blinking in the sunlight, she left the shadowy barn, a light breeze ruffling her pelt. It wasn't cold, and with it came the promise of clear, longer days. It didn't take long for her to track down a fluffy grey squirrel, and she was soon in a hunting crouch. Just before she could pounce, the unmistakable scent of a predator overwhelmed her. Fox.

Whipping around, she was met face-to-face with the dark ginger animal, baring its teeth at her. Although young, it seemed to be as desperate as her to make use of the newleaf. Reacting quickly, Aoife bit down on the mangy pelt of the predator, and lashed out as she scurried out of reach. However, she didn't get quite far enough away, and soon learnt this from the sudden pain in her hind leg. If it weren't for her thick pelt, it could've badly damaged her leg, but instead she was just left with it bleeding.

The fight had only just begun, but Aoife was taking no chances on who the victor would be. She leapt onto the foxes back, using her large size to pin it to the ground as she slashed at its back with unsheathed claws.

Aoife began to lose her grip on the fox's russet pelt, and no matter how much she dug her claws in or how much blood she drew, the predator managed to escape from her grasp. She was thrown off, and she picked herself up off of the ground to round on the animal again. Now at a distance, she could leap towards it, her claws ready once again.

Now she was fully in combat again, the fox had the chance to grab her scruff, and shook her hard, making her head spin. Aoife had the sick the feeling that if she were a smaller cat, that could very well be the end. It finally released her, but her head was spinning too much to make another attack.

Her head hurt from the force of being shaken, but regardless, Aoife tried to lift a clumsy paw to the fox's face. She didn't have the strength to strike a blow, however, and was instead left at the mercy of the animal. It grabbed her in its jaws again, and she couldn't do anything to stop it.

Aoife's world had stopped spinning at last, although not enough for her to launch a real attack. She found herself face-to-face with with the fox, its foul breath unavoidable when it was so close. Unable to do much, she bared her teeth at the creature, snarling as fiercely as she could. Much to her surprise, the fox cowered away enough for her to have time to gather herself.

Creeping around the back of the fox, she yanked its tail in her teeth. It was a cheap move, usually used by younger cats, but her stunned episode had left her scared and slightly more desperate.

The fox fell down at the sudden off-balance, giving Aoife the chance to rear-up and bring her paws down on its head. Granted, she more fell than anything else, but her leg was in pain and she was beginning to tire of the fight. Luckily, it seemed the fox had had enough. It clearly decided that a squirrel wasn't worth being beaten in a fight over, and instead fled. No longer running on the adrenaline of the fight, Aoife's legs gave way, and she collapsed to the ground.
