After his success during the last hunting patrol he organized, Firestone was ready to try another one today now that the night was upon his head. Until now, hunting was the only thing that could keep him distracted from the mess that it was his life after Gingerstripe's exile. He was glad that he at least had Violetshine by his side...

"I'm going to lead a patrol again today! Meet me at the entrance if you wanna come!" He called loudly before trotting to the meeting place he chose.

The young tortoiseshell she-cat was sitting outside the apprentices den when she heard Firestorms call and immediately stood up from her spot. She had been stuck in camp all day and wanted to get out, this was her chance. She padded up to Him and looked at the ginger warrior."Can I come? Please please please?" Dawnpaw asked. She was hoping for him to say yes, she didn't want to stay in camp any longer.

The warrior looked down at her and smiled gently. She was one of the youngest apprentices in the camp but Firestone loved young cats. They were so lively their energy gave a tiny bit of happiness. "Of course you can come. Let's wait for another cat to join us and then we can go."

Wolfheart's ears pricked at the sound of Firestone's voice, his head tilting slightly as he gazed intently at the ginger tom for a brief heartbeat. The prospect of hunting seemed...at least somewhat enjoyable. It was as if ever since Magpiewing had stepped down, he spent his days in a strange haze of detachment. Slipping from the shelter of the Warriors den, the rosetted tom quietly made his way after Firestone and Dawnpaw, tail sweeping in low arcs as he did so.

"Do you mind if I tag along?" Wolfheart questioned, head tilting once more as he awaited a response from either of his Clanmates, gazing at both Firestone and Dawnpaw.

Sitting near the wall, the smoke tabby she-cat had been flexing and unflexing her black, wickedly long claws. The she-cat's unusual claw length was slightly unsettling to most, but that would never stop her. Her ears pricked at Firestone's request for a patrol and she got to her paws. She could use the hunt. Thornpaw strode over and nodded in a curt greeting before answering the ginger tabby's call with a brusque, "I want in."

The warrior greeted Wolfheart with a nod and smiled at Thornpaw. "Sure. Come. We're leaving now." He mewed flicking his tail to announce that it was time to go. He left the camp with his two clanmates and he guided them to his usual hunting spot.

(Time skip)

Once they were there, Firestone stopped and turned back to look at Wolfheart and the two apprentices. "We'll hunt here. Gather every successful catch here, in this empty log." He mewed laying a big paw over a dead tree who had a hole in its centre. In that way, predators shouldn't track the scent of fresh-kill so easily and they wouldn't need to fight a fox or a badger. "Wolfheart, you're free to go anywhere. Dawnpaw, since you're still an apprentice, please stay near to one of us so we can keep an eye on you, okay? The same instruction goes to you, Thornpaw. I think that's all. Let's start this patrol!" He mewed cheerfully with a fake smile. Pretending was becoming easier every time but it also tired him. For the warrior, even if he didn't want to admit, the pain that he was trying to hide so badly was slowly consuming him and his energies.

Ignoring that fact, the dappled tom started tracking the scent of a toad. However, a more interesting scent caught his attention and he changed the direction of his walking toward a white bunny that mixed with the snow. The flame-furred tom crouched and walked slowly to it, his eyes fixed on its back. Once he was close and the rabbit still didn't seem to notice his presence, Firestone jumped toward it, catching its scruff with his strong jaws. He quickly broke his neck, hearing the sound of the bones cracking with the satisfaction of a perfect catch. The warrior returned to the point of start and left the fresh-kill inside the log, just like he said before.

Bringing up the rear of their small party, Wolfheart remained quiet as they trekked through the sparse forest. Simply going out into the woods alongside a few of his Clanmates and indulging in the silence provided by the secluded woods proved to be quite therapeutic. Halting a few tail-lengths behind his Clanmates, the rosetted tom’s ear gave a twitch in acknowledgment to Firestone’s words.

Watching as Dawnpaw trotted after Firestone, Wolfheart gave Thornpaw a carefully measured gaze. ”I’m sure that you’re more than capable of handling yourself, but just don’t stray too far.” He simply offered before slipping off in the opposite direction. After several heartbeats of soundless stalking, the mouth-watering scent of a toad became more prominent.

Dropping into a neat crouch, Wolfheart took several heartbeats to prepare himself before leaping. The slow-going toad hardly had a chance to react before he fell upon it, a brief panicked squeal being the only confirmation that he had indeed caught it. Lifting up the limp toad, and feeling its awkwardly short limbs bump against his chest, Wolfheart hurried back to the designated prey-drop area.

As they arrived, Firestone quickly caught their attention and alerted her and the younger apprentice to stay near one of the warriors. Any other time, and the spirited she-cat would have argued. However, this time, she simply didn't have the energy. Her brother's loss had taken quite a toll on her, not that she showed it. Thornpaw hid it well. However, no amount of pretending would let her forget. Her memories were physically engraved upon her face after all. She would never forget.

She couldn't.

Turning, she silently trailed after Wolfheart at his words. She stayed near, but not too near. After all, she wanted her own prey too. The apprentice lifted her muzzle to scent the air.

Nothing.

She sighed and moved forward, jaws parted slightly to pick up any scent of prey. "Stupid future fresh kill should be around here somewhere." Just as the words left her mouth, Thornpaw caught the scent of lizard. "Knew it." She purred, following it. As soon as she was close enough she dropped into a neat crouch, waiting for the right moment to strike. She had just been ready to pounce when suddenly a new scent crossed her nose. Her blood immediately turned to ice.

Badger.

She couldn't see it yet, but not knowing it's location was the only thing stopping her from calling out to the rest of her patrol. She swiveled her head slowly to the left as her one good eye scanned the marshland for the familiar wiry black and white pelt.

Nothing.

her eye immediately jerked to the right, spotting it just a few fox lengths away. This one was easily half again as big as the last one she had encountered. The one that had brutally torn away her right eye.

The one that had stolen her brother's life.

And it was staring right at her.

Lifting her head, the apprentice yowled "Badger! Regroup!" at the top of her lungs and turned to run back towards Wolfheart, the nearest warrior. She wasn't about to fight it on her own. Images crowded her mind and her missing eye began to ache painfully. Why now? Why her? Why again?! Starclan had been trying to kill her since she was a kit. Was she cursed? Why?! Tears quickly began to flood her left eye. This wasn't fair!

The badger snarled in fury as the prey it had it's sights set on began to run. It quickly began to give chase, gaining on the little cat quickly as long jagged teeth bared viciously and saliva dripped from the creature's maw. It was not about to go hungry this day. The badger was only a fox-length away from Thornpaw as she broke through the tall grass and came into Wolfheart's line of sight.

The warrior stopped his hunting when he heard the desperate call of the young she-cat. "Dawnpaw! Come with me!" He shouted before running as fast as he could to the origin of the calling. He soon felt the nasty smell of a badger and he knew what was happening. With a hiss, the tom changed his direction and stroke the predator from the shadow at high speed. His huge body tackled the animal to one side, probably distracting it from the apprentice. He had to defend Thornpaw and Dawnpaw... he couldn't let this beast lay a claw on them.

Firestone used Night Ambush, dealing 15 damage and costing 10 stamina.

After safely stashing the precious piece of prey, Wolfheart was quietly making his way back to where he had last left Thornpaw. As he drew closer to where he had last seen the young she-cat, a strange scent filled his mouth and made the thick fur atop his nape bristle slightly. He had scented it countless times, but why couldn't he exactly place it? The sound of the young she-cat's shrill yowling interrupted his wary train of thought. Muscles jolting into action, the young tom was suddenly racing in the direction that he had once came from. The tall grasses whipped and lashed at his face as he dove into them, leaving behind a wildly swaying trail as he charged towards Thornpaw.

The grasses broke around Wolfheart as Thornpaw came racing into view, but instead of rushing to meet the clearly terrified young she-cat, he veered off to the side, hastily making a wide arc around the edges of the brittle and sparse foliage. Though his blood was roaring within his ears, he could still faintly hear Firestone's yowl as he made a loop around where he hoped the lumbering Badger now stood. Stumbling to a halt for a heartbeat so that he could suck in a rushed breath, the rosetted young tom forced his fluttering nerves to steel themselves before he went racing back into the grasses where Firestone and the Badger were waiting.

Exploding from the shadow-laden grasses behind the Badger, Wolfheart let out a loud yowl as he lunged at the lumbering creature's rear side, hoping that his lashing claws and ripping teeth would distract it long enough for Firestone to attack once more.

Wolfheart used Night Ambush, Dealing -11 in Damage & Costing -15 in Stamina.
