Step Onto Land [CLOSED]

”Creampaw. Creampaw, wake up, it’s time to train.” Shimmerdust told the Apprentice, tapping her on the shoulder with her tail. She was not looking forward to training with the Asylum breathing down their necks. Then again, there was no way she was slacking on training her own Apprentice. She was already enough of a failure, she didn't need to have an Apprentice she barely trained. Ivystar had been a little guilty of that with her, and she didn't want it repeating on Creampaw.

With luck, someone like Duran with more compassion would follow. With less luck, they could get one of those more aggressive cats who would rather kill them right there just for fun. Shuddering at the thought, Shimmerdust retreated outside the Apprentices’ Den, waiting for Creampaw to come over. She wasn't hoping to wake up any of the other Apprentices, even though their Mentors would probably come over to wake them up soon anyways.

((OOC: Plan for this is to have them each do a hunting roll, then if no predator has been called yet, force a predator for the fighting requirement. Does that sound good?))

As soon as she heard her mentor she got up “what are we doing today?” she asked curiously

"We'll be doing some hunting. Some guy's gonna have to tag along, of course, but hopefully they don't make themselves too much of a bother." Shimmerdust replied. Her disdain for the Asylum was evident in her voice as she sent a glare to the many standing around. "Come on, let's get going."

She trotted to the entrance of the camp, where an Asylum cat stopped her. "Where are you going?" He asked with a sneer. Shimmerdust found herself cringing as she looked up at the badger-pelt-wearing cat, nose wrinkling. Nope, she had bad luck and got one of the worse ones. Mouse dung.

"Hunting with my Apprentice. I guess I can't stop you from tagging along though." Shimmerdust would have happily ignored the Asylum cat and just carried on with the assumption that he would follow, but that wouldn't be the best of examples for Creampaw. Besides, she did not want him somehow getting angry and fighting her.

The Asylum cat was thankfully happy with the explanation, falling in behind Shimmerdust and Creampaw as they set off.

“Ok”she said excitedly “where are we going to hunt?

"Well, how about here?" Shimmerdust suggested, walking up to a clearing and stopping. The river was unfortunately still mostly frozen, so no catching fish. What a shame-fish were some of the easiest prey to catch. "Unfortunately, you'll have to start by learning to catch land prey." The Asylum cat scoffed but didn't say anything. Shimmerdust opted to ignore him.

Shimmerdust began showing Creampaw how to do a hunting crouch. "So you tuck your legs in a little more and keep your tail a little more still. Yup, that's it! That's better." She nodded, satisfied with Creampaw's hunting crouch.

"Alright, so I'll be showing you how to hunt now. Or, well, how not to depending on how well I do. Hunting tends to be a lot harder in leaf-bare." Shimmerdust explained to Creampaw. The Asylum cat snorted at her lack of confidence in herself but thankfully still kept his tongue.

Shimmerdust lowered herself to the ground and stalked off after a mouse. One step, two step, close enough, leap. Her claws slammed down just beside the mouse, and she grabbed it with a swipe, quickly killing it.

"Your turn!" She mewed to Creampaw, silently thanking StarClan for letting her not embarrass herself in front of her Apprentice.

"Good job!" Shimmerdust was pleasantly surprised to see her Apprentice doing well at hunting despite it being Leaf-Bare and her having seen only one demonstration. Creampaw was doing much better than Shimmerdust was back in her own Apprentice days. "Now let's try to h-"

Before she could finish her suggestion for them to hunt something else like a squirrel, since mice couldn't very well feed the clan, a loud HONK! interrupted them. The next moment, a large white bird was rushing towards them. It honked loudly, signalling its identity as a goose. The creature pecked at Shimmerdust with its beak, making the she-cat yowl in surprise as the peck nipped her fur.

Hissing, Shimmerdust turned to glare at the goose. She reared up, slashing at the opponent fiercely. "Creampaw, be careful, stay safe!" She yowled to the Apprentice.

Out of anything she would have not expected a goose. She thought of what her most powerful move would be she thought.

Creampaw's natural instinct to fight surprised Shimmerdust. In any other cases she might have been indifferent or maybe even concerned by the idea that such a young cat's first instinct was not to scream and run, but to fight. Especially since they were facing a predator, not a cat as young as she is. However, in this case, she was pleasantly surprised as Creampaw seemed to have a knack for fighting. Despite not having been taught any moves, she seemed to instinctively know to slash at the goose's easy-to-hit underbelly with her hind legs.

The goose turned to face Creampaw, but Shimmerdust lashed out first, striking the goose again with her front claw as she reared up. The goose gave another enraged honk and pecked fiercely at Shimmerdust, ripping another wound into Shimmerdust's side.

Shimmerdust let out a quiet “woah” as the goose collapsed to the ground, Creampaw’s attacks combined with hers causing too much blood loss for the bird to handle. A new Apprentice had just taken part in killing a goose. Not only that, but Creampaw dealt a huge amount of damage. That large gash on the goose’s belly? Creampaw.

Shimmerdust gaped for another moment before smiling. ”That was amazing, Creampaw! You seem to have a natural talent for fighting. Whether that’s good or not is up to your interpretation. I’ve never seen anyone do that!” Granted, Shimmerdust had only herself to base it off on, but she didn’t mention that.

Quickly, Shimmerdust picked up both mice in her mouth. ”Do you want to try carrying that goose back to camp? I’ll carry these mice.” She knew very well what impressions could do, and Creampaw might be better off holding the goose so everyone would think she was the one who killed it. Of course, she wasn’t sure if Creampaw could hold the goose since it was quite large.

As the Goose collapsed to the ground CreamPaw felt proud she had just taken part in killing a goose!
