flying feathers [solo]

As she often was when not tending to her warrior duties, Zinnia was wandering the flower fields. She was mid-hunt today, but while she was hunting prey the additions to WindClan's fresh-kill pile were simply an additional benefit of her efforts as well as a justification for the time she was spending out here. The growing bundle of feathers gathered and caught amidst the wildflowers betrayed her true goal - she wove them into her nest, laid them out in pretty patterns, and often woke with feathers clinging to her fur, but none of those feathers were perfect.

(Nor, to be entirely fair, were any of these. But that was why she was still looking.)

No, Zinnia was still trying to find the perfect feather - a gift pretty enough to match both Olivestone's appearance and the lovely rock she'd confessed with.

A flash of color caught her eye as she scanned the fields, something that didn't quite fit in among the flowers. Then, a moment later, the flash of feathers. With the expert stance of a practiced hunter, Zinnia fell into position, slowly stalking her prey. Each step was graceful and deliberate, it was almost a shame that there was no one to appreciate it - only herself and her quarry.

Finally, when she'd judged that the moment was right, she pounced.

Suddenly, she was glad for the lack of an audience, as her prey zipped off into the sky and out of her grasp. Her frustration was eased, however, by the fact that her misjudged leap had caught her a few of the thing's brown and black-striped feathers.

For the next few minutes, Zinnia sorted through the feathers. All manner of colors and sizes had found their way into today's pile, the larger ones gathered where they had fallen rather than being caught. Once she was satisfied with her collection once more, she sought out her next target - she was growing better at identifying them at a distance, though it wasn't a skill that offered her much aid in the way of catching them.

Currently, her target was a jay - well, the jay's feathers, but coming back with empty paws would disappoint herself as much as her clanmates.

This time, however, she failed to catch even a feather off her quarry's tail; her frustration leading her to leap too early.

She wasn't going to falter now, not when there was an entire field to look over - once more, she told herself. If she faltered a third time, she supposed that she would simply count this hunt as a failure, but she certainly hoped to catch something for her efforts.

Once more, the glint of feathers in the sunlight caught her attention, and she chased that glimmer of hope as best she could.

This time, it was a success; and she set the thrush she'd caught down close to her feathers.
