| Lighttail’s heart skipped a beat as she saw a familiar face on her border walk. “Bianca?” she called out.
“Lighttail! It’s been moons!” The two silver she-cats charged towards the border, stopping with their paws just on their own side, and nuzzled into each other over the line. Suddenly, Bianca bent down and picked up a small object. “This is for you,” she mewed, setting a gray and white feather down at her daughter’s feet. Lighttail gave her a puzzled look.
“I… after I gave you and your brothers up, I started keeping three feathers with me as I wandered. If one got too badly damaged, I’d find a matching one to replace it but I tried to always be careful. There was a gray-brown one and a brown and white one as well.”
Lighttail’s eyes widened. Bianca didn’t need to explain the significance.
“I buried the brown and white one recently,” Bianca continued, “and I let the gray-brown one blow away on its own journey. I don’t need my feathers anymore, because I don’t need to wonder anymore what happened to you. And so I want you to have this. Do whatever you choose with it.”
Tears in her eyes, Lighttail embraced the old loner. “Thanks, Ma, for everything.”
