Berrypaw's Hunting Assessment

Aspenstrike had almost just returned from the battle against the Exiles. He had not been hurt but was sore from the fighting they had done. The sun was back, yet it was not all the way up when the tabby tom made his way into the apprentice's den. The golden pelt of his apprentice shone out from the rest. He was growing large and would be a warrior soon. "Berrypaw, could you meet me at the camp entrance?" With that, his fluffy form trotted away to sit and wait. Today he would be testing his apprentice, and he knew that Berrypaw was more than capable enough.

The large apprentice who was barely capable to fit in his nest, smiled a little when his mentor called him. He was not taking too well Firepaw's death... he was his best friend and now he was gone forever... They never got the chance to be warriors together...

Berrypaw met Aspenstrike in the said place and looked at him. "What are we doing today, sir- I mean, Aspenstrike?" He mewed trying to cheer up a little. Firepaw was gone, probably hunting in Starclan but he was still alive and he had to be a warrior. There was so much work to do now and he no longer wanted to be a warrior just for himself... but for Firepaw too.

Aspenstrike turned to see the golden apprentice, basically as large, or larger, than he. A gently smile beamed at Berrypaw as he approached. "Well, you'll be doing your assessment today. You already have all the skills necessary. You just need to show me. When we leave camp I would like for you to catch three fish and two other land or flying animals of your choosing. I'll be following you as you hunt just to make sure that you follow my instructions and don't get into any scuffles with predators." With a swish of his tail, he motioned for Berrypaw to begin the assessment. Soon after the apprentice left, the brown warrior followed.

The apprentice nodded, dipping his head respectfully to his mentor. Even though he had grown larger than him, Berrypaw still saw him as someone he should give his respect. After all, without Aspenstrike, he would have never been so close to becoming a warrior. It was time to make him proud.

The big, fluffy tom left the side of the older warrior, noticing a bird flying near. He saw him hidden in the bushes until it landed next to a puddle to drink water. What a perfect chance! With a delighted smile, Berrypaw approached his objective silently, keeping his tail in perfect balance between high and low. When the sparrow noticed his presence, the large cat was already over it. The tom closed his jaws around the neck of the animal in the middle of an escape flight, killing it instantly.

However, before he could properly celebrate, Berrypaw heard a strange growl. He looked back just to see a grey animal with a striped tail. It was not bigger than him but even if they shared the same size, it was clear that the predator was a threat to his safety. Berrypaw dropped his fresh-kill and stepped in front of it, protectively. The fur of his back started to bristle as he let a hiss not only to scare the predator in front of him but to call Aspenstrike as well.
