Ivypaw's Assessment [Hunting]

The sunrise was still a little while off as Lichenwing led Ivypaw through the trees. It was earlier than the tom usually got up, but he'd been asked to supervise Ivypaw's assessment, and if he was going to do that, he wanted to set him up for success. Lots of prey was active in the brief time between true night, and dawn, since the nocturnal creatures were still awake, but the morning creatures were starting to stir, too. Early bird gets the worm and all that.

"Alright," he said, half-tail flicking back and forth as several sparrows fluttered overhead. "Now, what'll happen is, you go off an' hunt as normal, but this time, I'll be watchin' ya, and taking notes on what ya catch and don't catch. Ya prob'ly won't see me, but I'll be nearby just in case ya find yourself in trouble, so if you need me, just holler, yeah?"

The charcoal tom pointed his nose towards a dense ticket in the distance. "Why don't ya start there?"

Ivypaw nodded and immediately went racing off into the forest. It was all a blur as he ran, but he stopped near the stony hollow in which he was trained. The snow-filled forest was gone, and if there was remaining snow, it would come in patches. He smiled, knowing that newleaf was soon. It slightly made him more happy. A squirrel was feeding on a nut. He leaned back into a crouch. Maybe after his assessment, he would have his warrior ceremony. Maybe this would prove him worthy of becoming one. He had always dreamed to be one. What was he doing? He was letting the squirrel get away! He hurriedly jumped in the air with outstretched, unsheathed claws. The squirrel turned towards Ivypaw and let its guard down. He slashed it, and it remained still on the ground. He dug a hole in a patch of dirt and placed the squirrel there.

Without any delay, Ivypaw was off, and Lichenwing grinned at the tom's enthusiasm. Hopefully, he would be successful - Lichenwing would much rather bring back good news. He gave the apprentice a minute or so head-start, and then started moving after him. It didn't take long to pick up Ivypaw's scent trail, and not much longer after that, he spied the tom up ahead. Lichenwing sat back on his haunches, hidden mostly behind a tree as he watched Ivypaw expertly bring down a squirrel.

Nodding in approval, he waited until his charge buried the squirrel and moved off, and then continued following him.

Ivypaw watched for Lichenwing but he couldn’t hear nor see him. He just nodded; Lichenwing was probably watching Ivypaw in the shadows. He saw a chaffinch hanging on the lowest branch of a tree, close enough for him to swipe. He crouched again, eager to brag to his siblings and tell Comfreyheart about it. Smugly looking at the bird brain, he dived towards it. He would make a fine hunter when he grew up, for sure. Maybe he could even give Comfreyheart one of the pieces of prey he caught. He felt his forepaw slam onto the branch and quickly aimed for the chaffinch. It gave a tweet but dropped motionless after Ivypaw had slashed it. He was lucky indeed and smiled before walking back towards the hole he dug and dropping it in it proudly.

The second creature to fall to Ivypaw was a chaffinch, snatched out of the lower branches of a tree with expert precision. Lichenwing grinned, making note of where the apprentice hid the bird, and then crept after him, weaving silently through the brush as he continued to observe.

2 down, one more to go! Ivypaw had this assessment on his side — 3 in a row! Something great to brag about, he smiled mischievously before crouching, watching dewdrops fall off leaves. If his assessment was a few days later than now, he would have prey swarming! But with his hunting prowess, he knew even leaf-bare prey stood no chance. He stalked a mouse, weaving in the shadows; the small critter would not see his paws crashing on the ground. He leaped and prayed to StarClan that he would catch it so this assessment could end, and he could rush back to camp to tell everyone. N-No way?! It fell right into his paws. Even he was surprised. He quickly ran back to the hole to grab the other two and meowed into the air, "Lichenwing!"
