A Feathered Adventure (Closed for Midnee)

"We're here!" Finchkit dashed away from Ospreypaw's side when they arrived at their destination; the broken pools. Purring, the silver and white tabby skidded to a halt at the edge of the still water. Touching one small paw to it's surface, she let out a gasp of surprise. The murky water was frozen!

The young she-kit was about to dash off onto the slippery surface, but looked back cautiously at her more experienced companion. "Is it safe?" Finchkit never ran into things without knowing all the details; making her a wary, but smart, cat.

Ospreypaw padded behind the bumbling Finchkit. He smiled to himself as she playfully skidded around on the ice. The Tom lifted his muzzle smiling down at the curious kit."It should be fine, I think..." He meowed reassuringly. Ospreypaw shook his head, he knew he was forgetting something. He hadn't been back to the Broken Pools since he was a kit.

Ospreypaw eyed Finchkit carefully, he was responsible if she got hurt. The tabby tom screwed his head up trying to think, why was he so hopeless? Was it because Fogheart wasn't here or was it the fact he was a stupid apprentice who shouldn't be taking a kit out of camp? Ospreypaw shook his head, begging his brain to work. He smiled at Finchkit trying to seem fine. Ospreypaw turned his attention to the ground, to the frozen ice beneath him. That is when it hit him. "Finchkit, be careful of thin ice!" He yowled.

Finchkit had just begun to slip around and play on the cold ice when Ospreypaw cried out. Looking down, the young kit let out a squeak of fear and bolted off the ice, back to solid ground. Her yellow eyes wide, the silver tabby looked up at the older tom and asked worriedly "W..was I going to fall in?" Looking back towards the pools, she saw that there was no damage to the ice's surface; no cracks or holes. Still, she hesitated to go back out; though the ice was fun to slip on, the naturally cautious she-kit knew better than to run off into something without all the facts.

Ospreypaw laughed. "Nah, you'll be fine. I just overreacted." he purred reassuringly. The tabby cat stepped forward and placed a paw on the ice beneath him." See, it's fine." he meowed glancing back at Finchkit.

For a moment the small she-cat gazed skeptically at the tom, who had stepped out onto the pool. Eyes unblinking, Finchkit slowly began to creep up to the edge, touching the surface of the ice delicately with a tiny paw. Looking up once again, she made eye contact with Ospreypaw before purring, and jumping out onto the pond.

For a moment she slipped around, managing to stay on her paws but soon she lost her balance. humping her chin on the ice as she fell, her eyes shone with frustration. Gathering her paws under her, she pushed up but only succeeded in slipping father away from the land. For a moment she was embarrassed, but suddenly began to laugh. I must look pretty funny, plus this is fun!

Ospreypaw smiled as the little kit stepped out onto the slippery surface. His blue eyes glistened happily as he watched her. The tom laughed as she fell over, but was soon by her side. Gently, Ospreypaw picked her up by the scruff and set her down. "You looked pretty funny." He purred flicking his tail from side to side. The tom glanced down at the frozen water and watched as the minnows beneath darted from hiding place to hiding place. "Hey, if you look down you can see the minnows as they swim. You can try to catch them if you go to where it isn't frozen over, just be careful not to fall in." meowed Ospreypaw.

Finchkit purred her thanks as Ospreypaw helped her find her footing on the frozen water. She was still a bit wobbly, but much more prepared for it now. Looking down through the ice, she watched as the little minnows darted around in the cold water below. With one paw, she traced their graceful movements through the water until Ospreypaw brought to her attention the open water.

Dashing over, Finchkit carefully watched the small schools dash about, and dipped her paw into the water to catch one. The resulting ripples only sent them back to the shadows. Disappointed, she turned to her friend and asked "How do I catch them?"

Ospreypaw followed Finchkit to the edge of the ice. The tom glanced down into the water that shimmered below him. "Patience." He replied. "If you go too fast you scare them all off, but if you wait, they return; and then you can catch them." Ospreypaw turned to face the tiny kit, hoping she understood what he had said. "Why don't you try again?"

Finchkit gazed up at Ospreypaw seriously as he explained fishing to her, and nodded vigorously. Looking back to the shallow water, she crouched down at the edge and watched, waiting for the tiny fishes to swim back over. When a sizable number had gathered, she reached out a small white paw and dipped in quickly into the water. Scooping, she purred gleefully when she saw a small minnow hooked on her claw. Hopping over to her friend, she squealed excitedly "I did it, I did it! Do you see me? I caught a fish!"

Ospreypaw's smile widened as h watched Finchpaw attempt his instructions. He was amazed at how fast she took it on, and how easily she seemed to catch the little fish. "Well done! It too me forever to learn how to fish. You're a natural!" he purred his chest swelling with pride. The tom glanced down at th water watching the fish dart in and out of the plats that managed to grow along the bottom. He sighed, and placed his paw in the water, coming up with a minnow to match Finchkit's. "Wanna head back now, or stay and play about longer?" Ospreypaw asked his fri d.

Finchkit beamed at her friend's praise, and purred her thanks. "T..thanks Ospreypaw! You're a really good fisher too!" She had watched as he hooked the minnow with seemingly no effort, and smiled proudly. Someday, I'm going to fish like that everyday for RiverClan! I'm gonna be the best warrior ever! At his other question, Finchkit suddenly realized how tired she was. Her paws ached and her tail hung low. Yawning, she nodded and meowed "Let's go back."

Ospreypaw nodded and slowly begun to walk back to camp, his eyes hlistening with prode. "RiverClan will be thankful for the food." he purred "I'm glad Leafbare is almost over. It seems like it lasts an eternity."

Finchkit fell into step beside the tom, a proud purr rumbling in her throat. Beaming, she looked up at Ospreypaw and mumbled around the small fish; "Yea! I can't wait to show Fallowstripe!" With that, she excitedly dashed ahead a bit.

Ospreypaw smiled down at the she-kit." She'll be so proud!" he purred trotting to keep up wuth excited kit.
