Silvertongue [Closed]

Slatethroat was awake at the crack of dawn. His chest pounded with excitement. Today, he would begin to train his first apprentice. Already the thoughts of fighting beside her in battle had begun to flood his dreams. The young warrior would train her to be great, and for Windclan, they would be unstoppable. He leaped up from his nest, accidently bumping the cat who still slept next to him. However, the grey and white tom said nothing as he raced from the den. He stopped briefly to smooth his pelt out with his tongue. There was no way he would look unpresentable on the first day. All he wanted to do was impress Dovepaw. Well, and continue to come across as the imposing warrior he was. Part of the warrior longed to appear as the greatest warrior ever in her eyes, the other half just hoped she would like him. As soon as his coat was smoothed into a perfect submission, Slatethroat continued his trek to the warrior’s den. A fond smile covered his muzzle as he remembered the moons he had slept here himself. Now, he made his nest with the warriors.

A soft paw reached forwards to prod the pretty, young she-cat. He shook her slightly to jolt her into consciousness. Ashstar had given him both a beautiful and eager apprentice to train. For both, he was grateful. His tail twitched impatiently, more with excitement than aggravation as he meowed softly, “Time to get up, Dovepaw. We’ve got a long day ahead of us.” Slatethroat looked down at her with a spark of feeling in his usually aggressive eyes. They were brightened with a new light today. Inside, he was a nervous wreck over the whole thing. However, the prospect of it all thrilled him beyond belief. On the outside, he looked as cool and composed as ever. The great, Windclan warrior he was. Slatethroat turned on his paws and rushed to wait at the entrance. He hoped she would join him soon.

Groggily, Dovepaw opened her eyes, and nearly hit the tom standing above her from surprise. "'Kay," the new apprentice muttered shyly, flipping over onto her other side. As she watched his white-tipped tail flicker out of sight, though, the scent of older cats around her woke her brain and a careless grin spread across her face. Dovepaw breathed in the wildgrass scent of her new mentor and felt her ear tips warm. 

Quickly, she attempted to calm her fluffy mud-colored coat—but it was obviously pointless and she soon gave up. At least she'd tamed the most unruly tufts of fur. Another spurt of excitement rushed through her and Dove raced out of the den, nearly bumping into Slatethroat.

"I'm really not hungry," she burst out instinctively, blue eyes flickering up to meet his green ones, "I just want…can we start? I, um…"

"May we begin?" she corrected herself, trying to act a little more like Spiderfur. A tuft of brow fur wavered in the breeze above her head, failing to make her look dignified.

"As long as you're actually ready." He meowed, glancing down at her as he raised a non-existent eyebrow. The grey and white tom turned to stalk out of the entrance and his long tail flicked against her cheek. Slatethroat hoped Dovepaw would be able keep up with the rigorous training methods he had in mind. Of course, a lot of that included running the length of the territory. Any good Windclan cat, even the youngest, should have a talent for sprinting the moors. The warrior lead her out onto the territory for the first time. A smirk edged at his maw as he glanced back at her. How will she react to it all? He remembered so many moons ago being impressed with it all. Even now, he was proud of everything their clan claimed. The other clans were deprived by the stifling forests.

"It's great, isn't it? Far better than the other clans boast. I cannot imagine why any cat would like to hide among the forest." He scoffed aloud at the thought. Slatethroat did not stop walking as he spoke to her. There was plenty of ground to cover. After a moment, he took off across the open land, motioning with his tail for her to follow. The muscular tom only stopped once they approached the Riverclan border. Ashstar had taken him here the first time they went out on patrol. If she learned nothing else after today, he wanted to make sure she understood who the real enemy was.

"I am," she replied easily, landing a sidelong glance back at camp that almost seemed to read: So long, mousebrains! as she trotted close behind her mentor, his tail-tip tickling her cheek. Somehow this small touch gave her a feeling of protection and comfort that she brushed off almost immediately. Maybe she had a crush on him. That only drove her to further determination that she would become the best warrior ever known in Windclan.

As soon as they hit the clearing, the sight of moors stretching on for what seemed like forever, Dovepaw let out a gasp, pausing to let it all sink in. The scents of rabbit and tallgrass and infinite blue skies were breathed in and she leapt forward to keep up with Slatethroat, a wild ache beginning in her heart. As he took off, she shot off blindly behind him, allowing the already familiar smell of him guide her. Her legs were four blurs, and she found herself closing her eyes.

She skidded to an abrupt stop a tail length in front of the tom, sheepishly opening her eyes and catching her breath. Though it had felt right, she'd never been out of camp and run that far. 

Her nose began to crinkle at a sharp scent before them, and she took a few more steps forward to try and distinguish it. "Ew," she found herself saying in disgust, her fur billowing sideways in the wind, "What is that?" She took a few more steps forward, aching to see for herself.

"The stench of the fish-brained idiots that live in the water... Riverclan." A low hiss left his maw as he glared across the border. His nose twitched at the horrific stench. It was probably not as bad as the grey and white tom made it out to be, but his own person distaste in the clan soured his opinion on them. Out of instinct, long claws slid into the earth below. Slatethroat let them dig into the ground. No matter how much Ashstar had tried to rid him of the anger towards the clan that had once ravaged his, even though moons before his birth, the tom would never let them go. Sure, maybe attacking that apprentice had been a mistake. But he would never let his guard down when it came to the fish-breaths. Riverclan, and all of its inhabitants, were the enemy.

As he glanced at Dovepaw, his gaze softened for a brief second. She was so young and innocent still. Despite the attitude she hid underneath her attractive appearance, she was just barely older than a kit. It felt wrong to throw her into the feud now. The grey and white warrior would have to train her up. A surge of protectiveness caused him to forget about Riverclan. That wasn't the important thing. Dovepaw's training and success was far more important. She needed to be made so dangerous no cat could ever harm her. Or they will have to deal with me, He thought darkly with narrowed eyes. After a moment of silence, he turned to her, "How do you feel about starting battle training? One can never been too careful, especially here."

"Riverclan," Dovepaw repeated, feeling the name slide against her tongue. She watched as her mentor's grey fur for which he was named began to bristle, noted the sharp hiss that escaped his mouth. The she-cat glared toward the fish-smells angrily. They must've done something bad. If it made Slatethroat angry, it made her angry, too.

The apprentice turned back around to find the tom gazing at her in a strange way. Her stomach fluttered and she hesitated a heartbeat too long before replying, her eyes lighting up. "Fighting!" Dovepaw purred once his words registered, stepping toward him. "Yes, please! I've been looking forward to this since I was a kit." That was true. And, unfortunately, leaves did not make such great enemies after all.

"Good." Slatethroat was pleased with the enthusiastic response and instantly crouched down. His tail lashed, fur bristling, and teeth bared. The warrior tom had no intention of harming the apprentice. However, he did not plan on going easy on her. She needed to know how to protect herself. I can't always be around... he found himself thinking as he looked over at her. There certainly would be times he couldn't be there. She needed to know how to defend herself against Riverclan, or any others who had an ill intent against her. The grey and white warrior would never let that happen. At the thought, his claws unsheathed into the earth. But he quickly retracted them. There would be no blood drawn today, or ever, if he could help it. After a brief pause, he meowed lowly, "Attack me."

At Slatethroat's short reply and loose, quick drop to the ground, she followed, crouching sloppily. Her back legs ached with anticipation, and she raked her eyes over him, looking for any drop of weakness. He was much larger than her, to the point where she almost felt hopeless—but she remembered what she'd watched other apprentices do. Her small size might help her. She ran toward him and dived beneath his towering stature, kicking from beneath. As she landed behind him, her head buzzed and she felt more alive than ever. This was fun. Wide blue eyes and a lopsided grin waited to meet him when he turned around. For a heartbeat, she forgot that they were fighting and let her guard down.

Slatethroat was shocked by the apprentice's speed. He barely had time to react before she was sliding underneath him. The grey and white warrior leaped up as he felt his sheathed paws swipe at his underbelly. There were some advantages to having a smaller stature that he so often forgot, given his own bulk. A goofy grin crossed the she-cat's face and he couldn't help but let his battle-twisted expression falter. His tail lashed as he twisted around to face her and rushed towards the much smaller cat. Easily, his paws knocked her to the ground. Slatethroat smirked as his paws pinned her down firmly. There would be no wriggling her way out of this one.

"That speed isn't going to help you much when you can't move, now will it?" Slatethroat shot her a sharp-tooth grin that edged between an awkward growl and an attempt at humor. He couldn't help but notice what a stunning young she-cat Dovepaw was as he stared down at her. His ear flicked as if to dismiss the thought. There was no room for any distractions in battle and he certainly didn't want his apprentice to gain the upper hand on the first day of training, but there was no denying that Dovepaw was something special. The warrior waited for some sort of remark or for her to struggle in vain to attempt to shake him off. Slatethroat was satisfied either way, he was on top now.

Dovepaw let out a yelp as Slatethroat came barreling toward her, as she landed belly-side-up on the tallgrasses. With a start, she realized how close they were, and her heart began to beat quicker. She avoided looking the tom in his eyes, focused on getting out of the trap she was held in.

The mud-and-cream she-cat struggled beneath him, trying to wriggle her way out of the situation—but to no avail. "You..will…take…that back!" Dovepaw huffed, flopping around in vain.

Dovepaw is held for 1 more turn.

"Can't take it back," Slatethroat hissed lowly, "I'm still the one on top." It took all of his willpower to not let his claws slip out and knot into her fur. No, he would never hurt her, but the power he felt in having the upper hand was not like any other. The grey and white warrior felt unstoppable in battle. When adrenaline pumped through his veins, Slatethroat felt like he could take on all of Riverclan. The only thing that felt better was this moment being with Dovepaw. He shook his head quickly in confusion, but his expression remained neutral. There was no reason to let the young she-cat know what was happening in his head. He leaped backwards off of her.

In a flash, the warrior's paw flashed forwards, batting her muzzle and boxing the side of her head. It wouldn't hurt her at all, only momentarily confuse. A smug look overtook his features. Not but a moment ago she was taking advantage of speed. Now, it was his turn. Slatethroat made sure to keep light on his paws. With a bulkier frame and muscle, he was a bit slower naturally. However, he seemed to still be quick and handle it well. There was no doubting the proud tom was a decent fighter. The drive and power behind the move was matched with a surprising amount of well thought out moves. It would be easy to assume that such a brute of a warrior wouldn't be as skilled in combat. His eyes danced with a fire that only appeared when he fought. Slatethroat waited for Dovepaw to strike back. This was fun.

Struggling again, Dovepaw paused in astonishment as Slatethroat let her up—only to be clubbed in the face with a massive paw. 

The pretty apprentice was gradually becoming exhausted, but she kept fighting. Scanning her mentor for some type of weakness, as she had before, she finally dived sharply behind the tom, catching his lashing tail in her teeth and pulling, yanking him off balance. She would use the advantage of her being small as much as she could, though found herself wondering for a long heartbeat if she'd actually hurt him.

In a kit-like stubbornness, she said fiercely, mouth muffled by fur, "You—will—take that—back." Dovepaw's claws, now unsheathed, dug into the ground to keep her from falling over, and her dark tail waved high, fluffed up straight into the air.

Slatethroat was not at all prepared for what happened next. One moment he had the upperpaw, the next he was being shocked into a brief submission. A dull ache instantly started at the base of his tail as teeth prickled into the end. She had pulled off a tail yank! He was surprised by the bold move. Instantly, he berated himself for not seeing it coming. Dovepaw had far too tight a grip on his tail to want to try and pull away. He dug his claws into the earth as he tried to think of a way to get out. There wasn't one unless he wanted flesh and fur ripped away. The apprentice had outsmarted him. And on the first day too.

"Alright. Alright. Get off me." Slatethroat finally growled. Shaking his coat once she had let go, he turned to face her. Pride would not allow him to 'take it back' as she had so begged. Instead, the warrior chose to ignore that statement, "That wasn't bad. You have quite a bit of potential." His green eyes locked with her own as he spoke. Dovepaw was a magnificent apprentice. After a moment of staring at her, he glanced away. It felt wrong to tear his eyes away, but he felt strange looking at her in such a way. What now... what now, he searched for some idea of what to do next, all while waiting to hear her beautiful meow again.

A triumphant grin spread across Dovepaw's muzzle as her mentor gave in and she ungracefully dislodged the tom's tail from her tight grip. The apprentice felt herself light up with Slatethroat's praise and stepped around to meet his gaze, a smirk etched onto her maw. "I do, don't I?" she purred, fluffing out her fur. Pausing to watch him, she oddly felt herself shiver, though it was a warm day in Green-Leaf. I'm so lucky I got to be paired with him, she thought dreamily, before quickly snapping out of it. They were in a training session…there was work to be done. If Dovepaw wanted to be the fiercest, strongest warrior out there, she needed to stay focused.

"Now what?" the she-cat mewed. Her soft, messy fur stuck up in tufts after the fight, and it gave her an amusing appearance. Bold blue eyes peeked through the chaos, flickering glee. She awaited his answer, heart beating rapidly—and not just because of the recent workout. It was only him and her and the sweetly singing birds up above.
