Rapidfire was well aware of the critically low levels of food on the fresh kill pile. A lot of her patrols had been for Tigerstar and searching for their lost leader. The reality of his dissapeance was still settling for her and she was not sure she would ever really accept it. That wouldn't matter for long if she couldn't get the pile back to looking more like an actual pile instead of the sorry excuse that it was currently. Picking at it she saw a skinny mouse and a bird that looked like it had been on there for a day or so too long, she stuck her tongue out in disgust a it cleaning it out before doing anything else. Going over towards the camp exit she was ready for a hunt. "Windclan, let's hunt" she meowed to those around, this would not be a formally planned patrol, she had been rolling with the events lately and so the usual planning that she would do was no more at least for now in the hectic times of acting as both the clan leader and deputy. It made her realize that she should not and would not be able to keep doing both jobs for much longer. If Tigerstar was not found she would need to face the reality she had been long hoping to avoid this soon... She needed another.
She walked out of camp ears already on alert for chances to catch much needed food, well at least they were in luck in one aspect, the winds of the moorlands were loaded with rabbits today, there would be plenty it would appear.
"Fan out but close enough for trouble" she whispered stalking ahead.
A rabbit was nearby, she could scent it all over. She stalked towards its location and pounced at it.
She caught it, though it was not at all a clean catch, she had to work hard to nip its neck and she panted heavily after the chase. She could feel the longer days of working what essentially the job of two cats catching up with her. Hopefully her clanmates were having just a good a luck with the hunting however.

The whole camp was swept with grief it seemed, duties neglected left and right. It wasn't good enough, but Viperpaw had no grounds to stand on, it wasn't like she had tried to be that change, tried to organise patrols or even hunt alone. No, she'd... She'd feigned superiority once again. Next time, if there was a next time - and she prayed to the stars that there wouldn't be - Viperpaw would do more. She'd see WindClan through the bad times like they didn't exist. It was if her thoughts were echoed aloud as Rapidfire called finally for a hunt, putting her words into actions. Naturally, the golden molly was on her paws, trotting proudly to the deputy's side. Her and Rapidfire they would be the future of WindClan, and while Rapidfire hadn't received her lives... And she... She wasn't even a warrior, it was important the clan got use to seeing thier united front. That was, at least, what she told herself, not that she was eager to take her mind off the loss of Creamlily and her father. WindClan... It was larger than them both, and this was something she'd known deep down, didn't make it any easier though.
The cats that had gathered fanned out once away from camp, and while Viperpaw wished to stay on task her mind was elsewhere. No matter what she told herself it seemed the deeper into the territory she went, the further from those she had to appear strong in front of, the more the loss seemed to fester. Her heart was heavy and her pelt frayed, reflecting her own internal strife. She had to catch something though, coming back empty pawed was not an option. Her lip curled, and she inhaled, a breath to quiet her mind and to scent the prey. The scent of squirrel hit the back of her throat, which only upset her further. A reminder of Creamlily, and another one of their squabbles. It was close too. A tail length or two away. Her eyes peered through the tall grass, catching its red fur. this close to hibernation it was taking risks to gather as much food as possible.
Viperpaw sucked in a breath, and bent her legs, before leaping into the air. She'd seen foxes using this technique, perhaps they were on to something. She'd miscalculated though, and the squirrel scattered. She remembered why WindClan stuck to rabbits, and how she now had nothing. If she'd been more focused before, instead of caught up in her own feelings, maybe she would have been capable of hunting properly. With a low growl, she shoved her sadness further down.

While the search for Tigerstar continued, it was clear that WindClan also needed to keep on top of hunting and keeping the freshkill pile stocked prior to the colder season that was quickly approaching. Having been wanting to help his mate in any way he could in hopes of taking some stress off of her shoulders, he had joined her and some others on a patrol. Personally, he wasn't the clan's best rabbit hunter and preferred smaller prey that wasn't as nimble as these big-footed rodents, but even so he knew he had a job to do and was determined to help out.
Nodding at his mate's words, he caught the scent of a rabbit nearby and crouched down. Slowly making his way through the tall grass with his tail low and being sure to step carefully, he soon caught sight of a plump rabbit just a few foxlengths away. Slowing his pace and breathing steadily, Molehill crouched down even further and bunched his hind legs up in preparation to pounce. If he stayed silent enough and if the wind kept steady, there was no way he would be detected.
Readying himself, the plump warrior leaped forward and landed squarely onto the rabbit's back. Before it was able to let out a warning squeal, he gave it a swift bite to its neck. Standing up and giving his pelt a shake, he padded back over to where the hunt had begun and in the process made his way past Viperpaw who looked a bit disgruntled.
"There will be more prey," the warrior mewed, hoping he wasn't overstepping. "Don't give up," he added softly before trotting off. Back when he was younger he would've wanted to give up right then and there, but he knew now that with just a little bit of practice that it's possible to improve one's skills. His mentor had believed in him and he wanted to share the same hope with his clanmates.
Leopardwind trailed after his clanmates, for once not at the front of the patrol or even trying to take charge. Standing at the back, it was the first time he really paid attention to them. How Rapidfire's kill was messy, the weariness evident even in the way she moved; how Viperpaw clearly had a lot of her mind, and how she tried to mirror a fox's way of hunting squirrels-- he had never even thought of doing that, and honestly it did sound like a good idea; and how Molehill, despite his usual quietness, was quick to comfort Viperpaw... he had always expected the older tom to be the kind sort, but this-- seeing it-- was different. It made him wonder just how much of his clanmates he had missed, trying to race to the top.
Tigerstar was still missing, and the Clan was slowly tiring from all the search parties. They had all seen it before-- when their clanmates went missing in the past, they had done the same, and all of them knew by now that it was hopeless. The Clan couldn't sustain these search parties forever, and the world was so, so big. As he now knew, trying to find his siblings away from home. The black tom briefly closed his eyes, swallowing his grief, and began his own hunt. Leaffall had settled over the forest, and before long, snow would cover the moor as well. They had to make the best of the plentiful prey while it lasted. Tasting the familiar scent of rabbits flood his mouth-- oh how he had missed that scent-- Leopardwind split from the patrol to persue it. It was too easy, falling back into the standard hunting positions, the same stalk as he approached his prey, keeping down wind just as it had been drilled into him as an apprentice. He let his paws fall into place, feeling the familiar tensing of his muscles, the wave of his tail, the prick of his ears. This-- this he had missed.
He must've been out of practice. His claws fell short, and he watched the rabbit scurry away. Frustration welled up in him-- had he grown too used to digging for mice to remember how to hunt rabbits? His clanmates were watching, he knew, and hot shame rippled over his pelt. Still, there was a smile that tugged at the corners of his mouth. It was nice to be back to racing down the moor, and he promised himself that he'd get the next rabbit. For now, he would join his sister empty-pawed, simply happy to be beside her.
