Subject: Pondkit's Apprentice Ceremony Mon 21 Oct 2024 - 14:39
Another day, another ceremony. This time one of the kits was ready to become an apprentice, and Wolfstar was happy to cover for Falconmoon today. Apprentice ceremonies had been her favorite thing about being deputy, and the leader was smiling when she leapt to the tallbranch.
"Let all cats old enough to climb a tree gather beneath the tallbranch for a clan meeting!"
Pondkit's large ears perked when Wolfstar called the meeting. Could it be, finally, his apprentice ceremony? After Firetreader's little training lesson, he felt more ready for apprenticeship, but looking up at Wolfstar on the Tallbranch was certainly daunting. Hesitantly, he crept closer, lingering in the middle of the gathered cats just in case this was actually for him. Glancing around at everyone, he wondered to himself if Foxsnap, Asterpaw, and Firetreader were watching.

"Pondkit, step forward," Wolfstar offered the kit a smile when she spotted him hesitantly moving to the center of the crowd. "You've reached the age of six moons, and it is time you become an apprentice of Skyclan. From now until you earn your warrior name, you shall be known as Pondpaw. Your mentor will be Firetreader. He is young, but a capable warrior, and I expect him to pass on all he knows to you." Wolfstar dipped her head to her grandson, then leapt from the branch to signal the end of the meeting.
The gray tom's eyes widened when Wolfstar declared his new name, his heart thundering in his chest. Suddenly he felt a bit faint, but a proud smile soon crossed his face and he looked around for Firetreader, his mentor.
Spotting the young warrior among the crowd, Pondpaw weaved his way towards him, tail held high. "Firetreader...!" he cried, smiling up at him. "I did it, I'm an apprentice now...! And you're my mentor...!" His eyes gleamed with excitement, but he remembered himself and his manners and grew shy again. Gingerly, he bumped his forehead against his mentor's shoulder in respect. "Um, so...when do we start? Tomorrow?"

Wolfstar's voice echoed through the camp and Firetreader lifted his head from a rather in-depth grooming session, his tongue partially stuck out of his mouth. Grunting, he rasped his tongue over a couple more spots before he got to his paws and moved to settle down beneath the tallbranch. Another ceremony, another announcement, what did it matter? Another voice in Firetreader's head tried to tell him that it all mattered, that this was his clan, but he turned his head to towards the ground, a frown carved firmly onto his face as Wolfstar called forward the apprentice of the hour.
The name was familiar, for once, and Firetreader's body tensed, his body like a puppet whose string had just been pulled. He peered through the crowd, yellow eyes bright, and felt his ears slant back at the sight of Pondkit approaching the tallbranch. He remembered the kit, soon to be apprentice, fondly from their little training session not too long ago. He'd admittedly endeared himself to Firetreader, a fact that had the tortoiseshell tom picking at the ground uncertainly with his claws. He liked Pondkit - he was a good cat - if something happened to him now that he was about to debut in the world...well...he'd try not to think about that.
Instead, Firetreader scanned the crowd as the ceremony droned on, trying to pick out his ideal mentor for Pondkit. Suddenly, Wolfstar said his name instead of another warrior's. Firetreader's head snapped up to look at his grandmother as she dipped her head, and he frowned. He already had an apprentice, but if she thought he was capable of training two at the same time, he supposed he would just have to trust her judgement.
Before he got the chance to even get up, Pondkit - paw now - was in front of him, a great big smile on his face. Whiskers twitching, Firetreader got to his paws as Pondpaw nudged his head into his shoulder and, for the second time of his life, touched his nose to the top of his new apprentice's head. "Tomorrow." He confirmed with a slow nod. "I'll come find you at dawn, so get yourself a good, comfy nest. You'll be wanting all the sleep you can get come tomorrow."It would be a long day.
