Subject: Lilies and Briars [Lilyvalley] Wed 9 Oct 2024 - 19:03
Briarpatch was happy to return to camp after an uneventful border patrol. Glancing around, she searched for signs of her siblings, but they must have been on their own patrols. She did spot her aunt however, and Briarpatch trotted toward her. Hopefully she wasn't intruding. "Hey," She offered her aunt a small smile, though she wasn't even sure what to say. So much had happened recently.

LILYVALLEY
If we did what was easy
With Cedarkit asleep in the nursery, Lilyvalley was just about to request a patrol. She had learned that keeping occupied got her through each day, and work often did that fairly well. Especially when she was with other cats who could keep her out of her own head.
So she was both relieved and anxious when Briarpatch approached her. Conversation was always something nice, but at the same time, Briarpatch was a cat that would care more about the struggles she went through. And that might mean she might be forced to actually talk about the things she had decided avoiding would be best.
Still, she managed her best smile. "Hi, Briarpatch. How are things? Are you just coming back from patrol?"

"Yeah, just a border patrol." She mewed, "No raccoons or dumb angry birds this time. I don't remember the last time one of my patrols was uninterrupted. I kind of like the quite, though." She added with a small smile.
"How are you? And Cedarkit?" She was almost hesitant to ask, knowing well, everything that had been going on. But Lilyvalley was family and Briarpatch cared for her aunt. And to not ask would have been rude, even so.

LILYVALLEY
If we did what was easy
There it was, that dreaded question. Her smile tightened slightly, forced to maintain how everything was absolutely perfect and everything wasn't falling apart at her paws.
"I'm doing great! Cedarkit is taking a nap, so I have some free time to spare. He's growing up so fast, I don't know what I'm going to do with myself when he becomes an apprentice. Going back to being a warrior full time after 6 whole moons is going to be a transition for sure."
Taking a seat, Lilyvalley patted the ground to invite her niece to join her. "What about you? How have you been holding up?"

She could tell Lilyvalley was holding back, but Briarpatch wasn't confident in her ability to say the right thing or not make things worse. She cared for her aunt, but... Perhaps it was best not to push.
"I bet he's eager to become an apprentice. I know I was at Cedarkit's age." Briarpatch grinned wryly, Lilyvalley probably remembered her excitement all too well. "I'm... Not sure it's all I thought it would be, honestly. Fourtrees-" Briarpatch stopped herself mid-sentence, ears flattening briefly.
"Not that I wouldn't defend my family or clan, of course. I just wish it wasn't... So often." She'd had a similar conversation with Smokeytimber when he'd become a warrior too, she recalled. "But I've been alright. Having my own littermate for an apprentice is a little weird, honestly? But I love it. Even if Web is stubborn."

If we did what was easy
Lilyvalley smiled softly, knowing all too well what was going through Briarpatch's head. "It is scary, all that seems to happen. I wish I could tell you it gets easier. But if I am being honest, if that were true, it hasn't happened yet. I can't remember a time where it was easy. Only a time where I was too naive to realize the bad happening."
She sighed, shaking her head.
"Webpaw is lucky to have you for a mentor. And if it helps? Even though things don't get easier, I have learned that they prove how strong we truly are. So many hardships, and yet we still are standing. That has to count for something."

"I don't like how much sense that makes..." Briarpatch grumbled. "But yeah. I guess that tracks." As a kit she'd definitely not had any idea of what she was in for as a warrior. All they could really do was roll with what happened and survive. Make the best of it. As her aunt had said, they were still standing.
She nodded at the mention of Webpaw, "Oh, I love training with her. It's just... Awkward. She spent so long in the medicine den, and it's hard to really think of her as my apprentice, y'know? She's my sister first, really."

LILYVALLEY
If we did what was easy
Lilyvalley let out a hum, thinking for a second. "If anything, Webpaw is lucky to have you as a mentor. I remember my apprenticeship. The first one, at least. I don't think I had spoken to my mentor once. He didn't even acknowledge me at my own ceremony when he was named as my mentor. And then he vanished. My brother was supposed to take over my training. Except, he never really did."
She let out a sigh, turning back to her niece. "Webpaw is going to go far in life, just because she has a mentor that cares about her. Who actually wants her to succeed. It makes a big difference, too. Be thankful for the chance you are giving her."
She let out a smile, before continuing. "For what it's worth, I would even trust you to mentor Cedarkit. I think you would make an amazing mentor."

"Your mentor never acknowledged you? Even at your own ceremony?" Briarpatch's confusion must have been obvious, but she couldn't mask it. "All apprentices need someone to guide them, don't they? If someone has the privilege to be named a mentor and still can't be relied on..." She shook her head. "I'm glad I haven't seen anything like that. At least, I haven't noticed anything. I like to think I would if one of my peers was just... Ignored by the cat assigned to train them. How did you manage?" It sounded like a very different apprenticeship than what she had had under Larkshine's tutelage. "I mean, I know other warriors will help train apprentices when a mentor is ill or injured, but such a complete lack?" She shook her head.
"I hope she does. Sometimes I'm not sure if I can really teach her everything just because we're littermates... But if Sablestrike thought I could, maybe I can." Sablestrike... He was gone too now. Just like Juniperhunt and Cardinalpaw. Briarpatch gave her head a small shake, choosing instead to focus on what Lilyvalley was saying.
The torbie ducked her head in embarrassment, but couldn't help a pleased purr at the idea of mentoring Cedarkit. "Maybe Web will have earned her name by the time he's apprenticed. I can't imagine they'd let me train two at once." She mewed, "Of course, I'd love to help either way." She added.
