If we did what was easy

"HEATHERBERRY!"

The cry for the medicine cat rang throughout the camp, coming from the nursery. The sun was starting to rise, but fate did not care for the fact that the Clan was beginning to settle down to sleep. This was a matter that simply could not wait.

It was a lot harder then when she only had one kit to bring into the world. But soon four little kits rested at her belly. Three tortoiseshell she-cats and a brown tom. She rasped her tongue over each of them, a purr rumbling in her chest.

For the first time, it felt like everything would be okay. The birth had gone okay. All her fears were for nothing. She had her children here, and she knew she would give the world for them.

One by one, she touched her nose to her kits.

"Blackkit. With your pelt like the shadows we live in, may you grow to love your home and the family that loves you so much."

The next kit nearly had her choking up, but still she continued. "Echokit. You look so much like my brother did. I hope you learn to shine just as brightly, and be just as kind."

"Maplekit. May you be just as sweet as the sap of the maple tree. Never be afraid to let the world see that beautiful heart of yours."

Just one more kit yet to be named. The only tom of the litter. "Cedarkit. May you always stand tall and strong. Look after your sisters, and always follow what you believe to be right."

Lilyvalley blinked weary eyes awake, glancing down at the four tiny bodies at her side. She had been holed up in the nursery with them for some time now, giving them room to grow in peace. But today, as she nudged each kit.

"Come on. It's time you guys got to meet the Clan."

As she led them outside of the nursery, she paused. "Alright, here are the rules. No going into any of the dens. Don't go anywhere where I can't see you. Try not to cause too much trouble for the rest of the Clan. Make sure you are polite, I don't want to hear about any of you being rude to any of your Clanmates. Try not to get too dirty, this is your first time out and I don't want you to make a mess of yourselves. And make sure you guys stick together." She had to let them go. She knew this very well. But every rule she listed just made her wish she could just whisk her children away and hide them away from the world.

"Alright, you guys go enjoy yourselves. Make sure you're mindful of everyone else, though!"

Then there wouldn't be anything to live for.

It’s a one of a kind feeling, being born, but then you immediately forget it, and it’s impossible to feel it again. But, you're easily distracted by all the smells you can take in, while to a full-grown cat, the amount of smells in the nursery were probably around one to two, but to this little one, it was revolutionary. She had then only just realized there were 3 others just like her, and all 4 of them huddled at the bigger one. Suddenly, the bigger one had started giving them names. Her sisters were named first, Blackkit and Echokit respectively, but what would she be named? ‘Maplekit’, was her assigned name, now she couldn’t actually see but she hoped it would match what she looked like. Then, the last one of them was named, Cedarkit.

Maplekit had just woken up, eyes still a bit blurry from waking up. Hopefully today if she asked enough times she would be able to leave the nursery today. Just as she was about to go up to her mom to ask, she was nudged in the direction of the rest of the clan by her mom. Surprisingly, today she wouldn’t have to ask to leave the nursery today. As it was finally time to meet the clan. She followed her mother like the rest of her siblings outside the nursery. Their mom had then layed out the rules. No dens, must stay in sight, don’t annoy clan mates, don’t be rude, and… stick together? While she didn’t understand the one about dens, she at least would follow that one. Stick together though? She wanted to explore as much as possible as fast as possible. Her siblings would definitely slow her down, so as soon as her mom took her eyes off her, she darted towards the nearest unoccupied cat, “Heya, who are you? I’m Maplekit”

A tiny calico kit wriggled among her siblings, sniffing each from whiskers to tail. For now soft ears stayed folded against her head but in time they would unfurl and her eyes would open. Even without all her senses she was already investigating the world she'd entered. When she grew bored of exploring the confines of the nest she turned back. With a soft mew the kit curled up against her mother's belly, dappled pelt nearly indistinguishable from those of her family.

Echokit crept past her mother, neck craning to peer around Lilyvalley's side. Her ears swiveled forward as she took in the camp. Finally she would get to see it all and find out what her clanmates were up to! It must be interesting, judging by the hubbub she’d always observed from the edge of the nursery. Her tiny mouth opened almost immediately to ask what was in the other dens but she was distracted just as soon by Maplekit’s escape. “Wait for me!” Echokit squealed after her sister, tiny legs churning to catch up. “Mama said to stick together!”

The hushed warmth of the nursery was what welcomed the kits into the world, along with tender, loving kisses from their mother. The reddish-brown kit let out a quiet wail before wedging himself next to his sisters. It was a declaration and warcry. Though Cedarkit had yet to know his family, a love so strong began to root itself in his heart.

Lilyvalley's voice sifted through the rustle of sleeping bodies in the nursery, reaching Cedarkit's ears clear as day. With a gentle prod, the tom yawned, tears springing out from the corner of his now open eyes. Those very eyes sparkled with pure, unbridled happiness. "G'morning mama.." he mumbled, brushing a ruddy cheek against his mother's flank. As the family peered out the den's entrance, Cedarkit's mind had nearly been too sleepy to fully pick up what Lilyvalley was saying. A mouthful of exclamations nearly came spilling from his maw, but the tom bit his tongue, eagerly hopping in his spot. It's time! It's time! It's time! He began mouthing this chant, prancing on his paws.

"Alright, you guys go enjoy yourselves. Make sure you're mindful of everyone else, though!"

"Maple! Echo! Wait!" Soon Cedarkit tumbled after the two sisters, burly form stumbling behind. "Ya Maple- Mama said to stick together." he huffed, seconding Echokit's cry once they caught up. Who was this that Maplekit was talking to? The tom-kit eyed the stranger with wide-eyed wariness, standing protectively in front of the other kits.
