It had been so boring lately, Milkkit felt as if he would melt under the sun any day now. It was too hot to play much outside the nursery, and he hated being confined to the inner walls of the nursery. The stuffy scent of milk and the high-pitched squeals of the other kits drove him mad, and if not for the many cats around them, he'd have loved to claw out a few tongues to get them all to stop their screeching. How did kits have so much capacity to scream so much all day long?
The white tom-kit knew he had to think of something, and he had to do it fast. What was an excuse he could use that would get him out of the nursery and away from the heat? Hold on, weren't there some shallow pools close to the edge of Camp? The water would be super cooling, and he was a RiverClan cat; no one would try to stop him from swimming, right? He might even get a few praises out of it. A thrill shot through the tom as he got to his paws, rushing out of the nursery as quickly as he could while still looking decently graceful. Even in this heat, he wouldn't want to trip and fall face-first into the dirt, or look like a beetle scrambling across Camp.
Milkkit reached the pools swiftly, slight disappointment welling up in him when he spotted another cat already dipping themself in the water. That wasn't fair! He wanted to swim too! The tom did not take long to find another idea, and with a yowl he plunged into the water, throwing a giant splash of water towards the other cat. He was still a kit, and who would fault a kit for engaging in a game? Milkkit giggled to himself as the other cat became drenched. Now this was fun!

ROOKFLIGHT
I would rather stay in bed, but...
Rookflight hated green-leaf, truly. They hated very little, but this season was always miserable. Even though their coat was short, which they were grateful for, the darkness of their fur swallowed heat and light like it was starved for it. And they were sensitive to the rising temperatures, feeling snappish and a little ill when the heat spiked too high. The days recently had been especially miserable, too warm to do much of anything unless it was dawn or sunset.
In an effort to combat their misery, Rookflight had found a moment between patrols to disappear to the Broken Pools just outside camp. They were far too large to sink into the water, pools too shallow and small for their proper use, but they could at least dip their paws in the water. And it did help, at least a little. The water was soothingly cool against their pads. Rookflight didn’t quite perk up from his heat-baked wilt, but he did feel, if only by margins, better.
He hadn’t been out there very long before the patter of tiny pawsteps drew his attention. Rookflight turned to see who was approaching just in time to see Milkkit trot up and stall at the edge of the pool. Rookflight opened his mouth to greet the little tom when Milkkit suddenly threw himself forward with a screech. The pool nearly emptied itself in response to the plunge, water splashing out and onto Rookflight. It soaked through his fur and made him shiver. Immediately, he felt uncomfortable with the clinging wetness. But at the same time… it felt rather nice. It helped to further drive away the heat under their pelt. Rookflight did not bother to shake themself out before craning their head down to blink at Milkkit. ”Hello,” they said quietly. Then, on a whim, they slowly reached out a paw--and splashed water back at him. A soft smile rose on Rookflight’s muzzle.
