I feel like I’m waiting for something that’ll never happen
Quillsplash swore that he could never keep Silverhawk away for long. For whatever reason, he just had to end up on patrol with the tom, and with Hedgepaw as well. He didn't mind his apprentice, of course, but when her older brother was around-- especially when said older brother's own apprentice wasn't around-- Quillsplash knew he was going to have a tough day trying to give Hedgepaw instructions. Not without at least one comment or look from Silverhawk. And both the silver tom's voice and his eyes drove the tortoiseshell mad. If annoying and charm had a face, it would be Silverhawk's.
At least Wolfpaw wasn't here, and Quillsplash would only have to worry about his mental stability and not his life stability. Hedgepaw's family sure was weird... anyway. It was just a border patrol, so if luck was on his side, it'd be over soon, and he could take Hedgepaw out for a training session after. Quillsplash greeted Silverhawk with a dip of his head and waited for the older tom to take the lead.
“A patrol with all three of my favourite cats!” meowed Nettleweaver, bounding over to join the group “Excuse my tardiness, someone had pressing matters to discuss with me, which weren’t very pressing, if I’m honest.” From Quillsplash’s tense greeting with Silverhawk he figured the two were at odds, which was disappointing. He didn’t need rifts between his two friends. They had to all be on the same page, his mismatched eyes fell to Hedgepaw. At least everyone liked her. Except Orchidspark hadn’t, but she was gone and so he pushed the bicolour molly from his mind. She could occupy his thoughts some other time. He needed to be focused on making his friends want to be friends with each other, and as he pondered he came to a single conclusion. He needed Hedgepaw’s help. In the most inconspicuous manner he could, Nettleweaver lowered his voice so just she could hear “I think Silverhawk and Quillsplash might not like each other that much, which is annoying, don’t you think?”

How lucky could she be? Hedgepaw liked patrols more than hunting or fighting, but her favorite kind of patrols were ones with cats that she liked. So when she heard that not only her big brother Silverhawk would be with her this time, but also her mentor Quillsplash and her friend Nettleweaver, she found it hard to keep her paws from fidgeting as she waited for the time to come. She smiled as she walked up to the group, allowing her green eyes to roam onto each individual face. "Hi!" she chirped happily. "Ready to go when you are." It had been a while since she talked to Nettleweaver, especially, since he'd become a warrior. Whenever she thought about that her throat got kind of tight and it was hard to speak, though, so she decided to leave that alone for now. He leaned down to whisper to her, and... what was he talking about?
The small apprentice blinked up at her friend with alarm, then looked at the two older warriors again. What did he mean? They didn't like each other much? Glancing at their faces didn't give many hints. Quillsplash was very stoic, but he kinda always looked like that, didn't he? Words of praise or criticism generally held the same face from him. And Silverhawk always smiled. She didn't see anything strange between them, but... she knew she wasn't that smart. If Nettleweaver saw it, she believed him. That would be horrible if it were true! Her mentor and her big brother were both very important to her. She liked them both and wanted to be with them all the time. If they didn't like each other, then... then would she have to pick one of them? The thought nearly made her feel ill. "What should we do about it?" she whispered back, feeling the way her heart raced with worry. "I want them to get along."
Quillsplash’s discomfort with him was funny. Silverhawk had few qualms with the tom other than thinking he was unfit to mentor his sister, though that thought was hardly exclusive to Quillsplash. No one outside his family should’ve been assigned the care of his siblings. That was neither here nor there. Quillsplash, though odd and surprisingly stunted in proper knowledge of warriorhood given who his own mentor was, was just as surprisingly… fine. Silverhawk did not understand what made Hedgepaw like him so much, but the bulky tom was at least decent. Silverhawk could practically taste the loathing in the air when Quillsplash approached, though.
”Hello, Quillsplash,” he trilled with a wave of his tail. It was such a lark, seeing if he could get the mottled tom to squirm. What was it that made him so uncomfortable? Was it that Quillsplash saw through his sheen and knew of the nasty, squirming thing within him? Or perhaps he just hated the games Silverhawk liked to play. He didn’t seem like the type that could keep up. Silverhawk’s usual smile grew wider. ”I’m glad to have you.”
Hedgepaw and Nettleweaver joined soon as well, the latter with his usual self-important crowing. An ear swiveled toward their whispered conversation, though Nettleweaver’s voice was too low to make out the words with clarity. Curiosity and a bit of indignation burned through Silverhawk’s pads, but he shrugged it off and rose to his paws. ”Alright, everybody,” he raised his voice, ”let’s get going. The moonlight won’t wait for us.” With a nod and a wave of his tail, Silverhawk turned and led them out of camp.
I feel like I’m waiting for something that’ll never happen
Quillsplash flicked his tail in greeting to Nettleweaver. The younger white tom was obnoxious as always, but today his eagerness to talk about himself didn't go unappreciated by the tortoiseshell tom. Anything to fill the awkward silence of the patrol... As Nettleweaver and Hedgepaw began whispering amongst themselves, he tuned himself out and instead focused on Silverhawk. Ignoring the way his entire body burned every single time he happened to be around this headache-causing menace, he tried his best to return the silver tom's smile. Something about that warrior's smile just sent shivers down his spine. Silverhawk wasn't a moral cat, not by a long shot, but surely there was nothing too horrible that he would do. He seemed to care about his family and friends, at least, and had become quite reputable among their clanmates so far. He could trust Silverhawk with a patrol, he supposed. And yet neither the reluctance nor the dread went away.
As they set off, Quillsplash took care to bring up the rear of the patrol. That way, he could keep Hedgepaw in the center, where she would be safe with Nettleweaver beside her and Silverhawk ahead. That, and he'd be the furthest from Silverhawk. He wasn't keen to be around the warrior for long periods of time. His amber gaze scanned the forest around them absentmindedly, content in his silence as he walked.
