To any other cat, it may have made sense to seek comfort in someone who knew a recently lost loved one. To find solace in the company of another who could empathize in the loss and heartbreak. However, Firepaw wasn't so quick to realize the good it might do when Blazepaw was killed. It seemed as though no cat knew his best friend like he did - that there was nobody he could confide in when the pain grew to be too much. It threatened to overwhelm him on days like today and just when Firepaw thought his thoughts might drive him mad, he remembered something. Or rather, someone who might be able to help. At least...he hoped she could.
The black and orange tom hesitated in front of the elder's den for several minutes, his eyes dull. Would she even want to talk to him about Blazepaw, the cat whose death consumed his every waking thought? What if she would rather just forget the whole thing? Though, if she cared about Blazepaw even half as much as he did, he doubted that was the case. So, with a deep breath, Firepaw nudged his way into the dimly lit den. Why did this feel so important? Maybe it was because he was finally meeting this she-cat who'd meant so much to his closest friend. "Robinmist?" He called, voice shaking as his eyes adjusted to the dark space.

Robinmist
You need a little bit of insanity
The days following the attack of the dogs had been wearing Robinmist down greatly. Her pelt was starting to lose it's shine, and she could be seen outside of her den less and less. Whether it was grief, or merely her age catching up to her, it was hard to tell.
She still enjoyed getting visitors, but she no longer sought cats out. She just stayed in her nest most of the time.
Hearing an apprentice come to the den, she supposed it was time for apprentice's to be going about their duties. Lately she felt more like a waste of space then a cat to be honored. She could barely pick herself up out of her nest anymore.
Firepaw stood stock still in the den, his yellow eyes fixed on Robinmist as she lay in her nest. He stared at her for a moment, well aware of the awkward silence hanging between them, yet unable for formulate the words storming through his mind. What was he supposed to say? She'd clearly suffered since the dogs attacked their camp - they all had. Some more than others, though as he looked down at the brown she-cat, all he saw was exhaustion. She'd been alive seasons longer than him and had seen so much...had Blazepaw's death truly affected her as much as it had him? The silence stretched on and, finally, the pressure became too much. "I'm so sorry."
Maybe it wasn't even Blazepaw whose death rendered Robinmist den-bound. He hardly saw her around the camp anymore, but maybe it was wishful thinking to assume he and this elderly she-cat had anything in common. Because, honestly, he desperately needed someone who understood. With a sniffle, Firepaw took a hesitant step back, his head hung low. "Blazepaw." He meowed eventually, the name clawing its way up his throat and out of his mouth like it had claws. Just saying his friend's name made his heart ache with loss.
"It was my fault." What did he hope to gain from this? "I should have done something." Sympathy? "If I had been faster," Maybe understanding? "If I'd been stronger," Companionship, perhaps? "I could have saved him. It shouldn't have been him." Forgiveness? Firepaw choked back tears, his vision blurry. He was a poor excuse for a SkyClanner. Sunfire would have been able to save Blazepaw. Sunfire would've saved everyone if he'd only been here - his absence only another of Firepaw's failures to add to the growing list.

Robinmist
You need a little bit of insanity
Robinmist's smile fell at the mention of Blazepaw, simply staring at Firepaw in silence as he spoke. Blaming himself for the death.
It was a few heartbeats before she even said anything. Simply taking the time to process what had been said.
"Ya know, there's a lotta things that coulda been done different. How many cats woulda been alive today, if only we made a different choice. If only we had known. If only.
We ain't got that knowledge, though. We catch the squirrels we see, never knowin' there is a bigger one in the trees till it runs away. We can go back t' camp and cry, or we can just keep on huntin'.
What do ya think Blazepaw is gonna want ya to do? He want you to wallow in ya self pity, livin' in regrets and thinkin' about them "if only"s? Or do ya think he gonna want ya t' look to the future. Keep moving forward.
The choice is yours t' make, but I think ya know what you oughtta do, dontcha?"
Firepaw frowned, his claws digging into the packed earth beneath him. He didn't like this. Robinmist should be mad at him. Furious, even. He was the one who'd stood back, terror stricken, as Blazepaw was viciously mauled. He'd been right there. He could smell the dog's breath and hear the crunch of bone as its teeth tore into his best friend. Worse than that, though, was that he hadn't be able to do anything to save him. Or rather, that he'd been too frightened to. It would be better if Robinmist yelled at him for what he'd done instead of trying to convince him to move on. He didn't want to. It was his job to protect his clan and he failed.
But maybe Robinmist was right. Blazepaw wouldn't want him to wallow in self-pity, a useless sack of fur for the clan to look out for. They had grand plans of leading SkyClan to glory, once. That shouldn't be forgotten just because Blazepaw wasn't here anymore. If anything, he should be working even harder than before. Jaw set, eyes still wet with tears, Firepaw moved closer to Robinmist's nest and laid down, careful to keep a respectful distance.
Firepaw would never forget Blazepaw, but he could turn his anger and sadness into something productive. Something that, if Blazepaw were still alive, would make his friend proud. "Okay." He whispered; voice still thick with emotion. "I can do better. For him." He wasn't sure what to say after that, still too frozen by Robinmist's words and his own traitorous feelings. He missed his dad and Mintglade, who was often too distraught over Sunfire's death to be very present anymore. With a sniff, he leaned his head against the elderly she-cat's shoulder. "Can you tell me about Blazepaw? How you met him? Nobody ever talks about him anymore."
