Nectarflower woke that morning with a sharp, debilitating pain in her belly. She jolted in her nest, a gasp ripped from her throat, and dug her claws into the soft mossy bed beneath her. What in the name of StarClan was happening? It had only been a few hours since she even realized she was expecting - she still needed to see Hemlockfox and tell everyone! The kits couldn't possibly be coming already! Kestrelchirp didn't even know! Wave after wave of anxiety rippled through the queen's pelt and she grimaced, teeth clenched against the pain. A nearby queen, resting in her own nest, lifted her head, concerned. "G-Get Hemlockfox. Now!"
She held back a groan as the other she-cat hurried away from the den, shooing any kits out into the clearing as she went. The nest several moments went by in a blur and by the Time Hemlockfox arrived with herbs and a single stick in his jaws, Nectarflower was lightheaded. He held a few leaves of some pungent plant to her muzzle and, after a moment, Nectarflower lapped them up. The medicine cat spoke, but she hardly heard him over the roaring in her own ears. A few of his words broke through the haze of pain and then, the stick was in front of her. "Push, Nectarflower." Pain shot through her and she nodded.

Spent, Nectarflower slackened her jaws and the stick fell to the soft, dirt ground with a thump. Hemlockfox sniffed at each kit in turn, making sure they were healthy, and Nectarflower watched silently as he padded out into the clearing. Exhausted but filled with a warmth she hadn't felt in moons, Nectarflower lifted her head to look down at the six beautiful kits curled against her belly. Each one was perfect and healthy and so so so precious. Four she-kits and a single tom. The queen licked each kit in turn before pawsteps caught her attention.
"Kestrelchirp." She meowed hesitantly. "Do you...want to help me name them?" She looked away uncertainly, tail moving to curl protectively around the small kittens. They'd only been mates for a short while, but surely, he wouldn't be upset. "I was thinking Deerkit, for this little brown and white one and then Moonkit for the silver she-kit and perhaps Cloudkit for this one that takes after me?" She panted for a moment, throat tight, and looked back to Kestrelchirp for approval. Were the names okay? Would he be as happy as she was?
Hemlockfox turned as paws thundered towards his sheltered alcove, blue eyes narrowed at the sight of one of WindClan's queens, a panicked look on her face. Great StarClan. What was it now? Did one of her kits cough a few times? Fall and scrape a paw? As he prepared to tell her off for bothering him, she frantically meowed that one of his former patients, Nectarflower, was about to start kitting. The seal point medicine cat stared for a moment, shocked, but nodded and quickly gathered up all of the herbs he could think of that might help.
As he moved to head towards the nursery, he grabbed a long stick and pushed past the queen that had fetched him. There's wasn't any time to waste if Nectarflower was, indeed, about to begin kitting. Anxiety pooled in his chest as he approached the breathless queen, though. He'd never assisted with a kitting before. At least, not on his own. Hopefully, the retired queen would pull through. He'd spent too many herbs and too much time on her for her to die now.
"Nectarflower." He meowed, concern edging his voice. "You need to take deep breaths. You're panicking." He reached for a few leaves of chervil and chamomile and held them to the tortoiseshell's maw. "Eat these. They'll give you strength and help soothe you." She clearly couldn't focus on his words, but Nectarflower ate the herbs anyway and he released a sigh of relief. There. Now, she just needed to focus. Voice uncharacteristically gentle, Hemlockfox put a paw to the she-cat's shoulder. "Push, Nectarflower."

As Hemlockfox nipped the clear sac around the last kit, Nectarflower slumped, the side of her face pressed against her nest. He blinked and vigorously lapped at the final kit until it began to mewl plaintively and carefully guided the soggy kit to Nectarflower's belly. The queen slowly came to her senses as he looked over each kit and, once he was satisfied that they were healthy, backed away to leave. "I'll...let Kestrelchirp know." He muttered under his breath.

The little she-kit, still yet to be named, met the world yowling. It was terribly, terribly cold, and there was a cacophony of vibrations all around her. Mewling, she squirmed closer to her mama, grateful for the tail that curled around her. It was warm and safe and she moved closer to Nectarflower's belly in a short series of wriggles, attempting to retreat into that safety. Mama? The tiny tortoiseshell had no voice yet - she could only squeak or mewl. And oh, she was so small - barely more than a scrap of fur, really. With her eyes yet to open and her ears yet to unfold, she had no means of defending herself.
But mama was safe. She trusted mama. There was an innate sense of security that fell over her, not unlike the softest blanket, as she curled close to her mama.Protect me, mama. She tumbled onto her side, exposing a small, round patch of ginger fur on her chest that wasn't unlike a small sun. A purr rumbled through her body. She was safe here. Warm and content, the little kitten gave one last, fiercemew,and promptly fell asleep.

The world was so cold, and yet her mother was so warm. Nothing else in the world mattered to the newly-named Deerkit as she stayed close to her mother's belly, surrounded by the collective and welcoming warmth of both her and her littermates. The world was at peace for a moment, and time seemed to slow down just for them. Nothing was more precious than a litter of kits that only knew love and peace, and had not yet been exposed to fear and hatred.

Cloudkit wriggled next to her siblings, tiny mewls escaping the little calico and white kit's mouth. She was hungry, and that bothered her. Greatly. Another meow escaped her as she pushed her way forward toward her mother's belly. It was... Crowded, with the bodies of her siblings also crowding around the poor queen, and once the kit had gotten what she wanted she stretched and squirmed, trying to make herself comfortable.

A multicolored kit squirmed at her mother's side, following the scents of milk until she was latched onto the queen and suckling. Thankfully she hadn't wandered too far from Nectarflower, but the little distance she had covered took a lot out of the young kit. She let her body fall limp against her mother's side and let her head bob as she drank her fill.

Whatever it was that entered his lungs now, it hurt. His body, once surrounded by warmth and softness, writhed against the strange feeling of his white fur drying for the very first time. For a minute or so he wriggled in the wrong direction, blind and deaf as he was, mewing plaintively for something to happen to set his path to rights, before bumping into something warm. What it was, he couldn't know, but he followed it back towards the scent of milk. Like the little worm he was, he squeezed and pushed between other things squishy and smelling like himself. When he had his fill there he instead burrowed slightly under the big thing called Mother, content and sleepy after a hard day of being born.

Kestrelchirp was shocked when the tom reached the camp to find queens outside the nursery and yowling coming from the den - Nectarflower's. With his heart racing, the tom sprinted to the den, about to shove his way through when Hemlockfox exited, mumbling that he would go get him. Without a word, the tom pushed through the entrance, immediately at his new mate's side. "Nectarflower? You were pregnant?" he gasped, nuzzling her cheek. It was good his mother delayed her journey to see this. And, he was a father! Looking over his mate, she looked tired but fine. "I'm here." he whispered.

Kestrelchirp was filled with a love he never knew as he gazed at the kits. He loved the names that came out of Nectarflower's maw and nuzzled her once more. "I love them." he breathed, pulling back to study the kits. "We should name that one Sunkit, to match their sibling. What about Snakekit and Gorsekit for the other two?" he added, gently brushing the bodies of the named kits with each one.
