Rashoumon
Rashoumon crept carefully through the sticky, muddy lands. It was darkest in this area of the forest, which aided him in his hunts. He appeared almost invisible in the dark shadows, save for his golden eyes that seemed to almost glow with bloodlust as he sought out a meal to eat. He hadn’t eaten in a couple of days now, mostly due to his poor hunting abilities at his younger age. He was only seven moons old, seemingly smaller than that because of his malnutrition, and so all prey felt enormous.
Despite the advantages of hunting in this dark part of the forest, Rashoumon was not the biggest fan of the prey found here. Toads and rats and salamanders—all slimy and disgusting in their own right, but at least it was edible. At least it would help him survive.
He heard a small skittering across the ground and froze. He opened his mouth, taking in a deep breath, and identifying the rare scent of a squirrel in these parts. His stomach rumbled and he carefully crept atop the wet mud. A squirrel sounded delectable. Food, at least, could keep him going where he had nothing else. He continued, carefully, until he felt he was close enough and then he pounced.
His paw did land on the squirrel, but unfortunately, it managed to wriggle out from under him thanks to the slickness of the mud and ran off with a squeaking shriek. Rashoumon ran a couple of strides after it, but he had such little energy to give proper chase. It disappeared into a tree and Rashoumon was left with nothing to show. He lowered, sulking and his ear twitched with irritation—until it twitched at the sound of an approach. He turned, eyes wide and claws remaining out. He thought he saw a shadow a short distance away, but his hunger left his senses dulled. He hissed out, “Who is there? Show yourself!”

Everything I say is a lie, but they’re the only things keeping me alive
He knew it was his duty to chase the rogue away, but he couldn't bring himself to do it. Some seasons ago, he had been that exact same kit, barely old enough to leave the comforts of his home but crashing through SkyClan's territory, desperate to find even the scrawniest mouse to feed himself. He remembered the fury that came with each missed prey, the shame and anger that burned in him when that she-cat stopped him and told him to leave. The coldness of her eyes that spoke of kindness she could not offer him. Even now, that same anger remained in him, sparking each time he caught a piece of prey he could have used back then. Maybe his littermates would all still be alive, maybe Copper wouldn't have been so hard on herself. Maybe he'd still be whole.
The black kit looked about the same age he had been when he was taken into ShadowClan; a moon or two older than a newly-named apprentice. The tom looked malnourished, and Quillsplash wasn't surprised when he missed the squirrel. The fact that the rogue was still standing at all was shocking, but he had to remind himself of his own desperation; he'd have found energy where no energy could have been. Eventually, his hesitation ebbed enough for him to approach the rogue with slow and careful paws. He didn't flinch at the rage that laced the words, not surprised to taste the bit of fear in the air. The tortoiseshell lowered himself into a half-crouch, stopping some distance away from the rogue to give him space. "I'm not going to harm you," He told the black tom, trying to keep his voice as soft and harmless-sounding as possible. "Do you want food?" He added. It wasn't a matter of whether the tom needed the prey, but if he wanted it from him. His own catches were some distance away, but he was sure he could run back and bring back something. He was breaking so many rules right now, but he couldn't bring himself to care.

It's not so much that I want to die...
Rashoumon had a lot of pride when he was younger. He despised the idea of relying on anyone other than his sister. He hated getting hurt or showing that he was hurting. He hated the smallest whiff of weakness; he was the strong tom that he was and he protected his sister from all of the bad in the world. Eventually, his sister died anyway, and that image he had built for himself was shattered. His pride still remained, but it did not hold nearly as much value as it once did. It was pride that had gotten his sister killed, after all.
He observed the tom that stepped out of the shadows with suspicion. The cats that he had run into in the forest had not been especially kind to him. And he of course had not been kind in return. Kindness is what got you hurt and killed.
Food was being offered to him. His stomach growled, audible to the cat standing before him. Hunger would get him killed too. At least he could fight off a cat. He could only fight hunger if he caught prey, and that was increasingly hard to do on an empty stomach.
His ear twitched and he regarded the burly tom with suspicion before he spat out, “All cats want food. What does it matter to you?” He could read between the lines with what this stranger cat was saying, or at least he was pretty sure he understood what was being implied, but he could not anticipate kindness from a stranger so readily.

I feel like I’m waiting for something that’ll never happen
Quillsplash sadly couldn't say he didn't expect the kit's reaction. He remembered dryly when he had been a much younger rogue, and upon being offered a mouse by an older she-cat, had scratched her before running away-- without even taking the mouse. "I don't enjoy seeing other cats' suffering," The tortoiseshell answered shortly, "And I know what it's like to go hungry." Without a word, he turned and left the black tom. Swiftly, he tracked down his catches, surprising even himself with how quickly he navigated the land. Maybe he really was becoming a ShadowClan cat. He picked up a plump-looking mouse and quickly covered the rest of his catches before running back to the rogue. He slowed to a stop before the black tom and dropped the mouse at his paws. Taking several steps back to give the rogue some space, Quillsplash sat down and starred at the tom. He was half surprised he hadn't bolted the minute Quillsplash had gone out of sight, but at least he now had food. "Eat it. You clearly need it more than me." He wondered what the rest of his clanmates would think if they caught him feeding this stranger. He knew some kind-hearted souls would understand, while some others would react with anger and scorn. Once the rogue had eaten some of the mouse, he prompted, "What's your name?"

Rashoumon regarded this stranger cat with immense and obvious suspicion. Every little movement made him flinch and his muscles tightened, ready to attack the second he moved a little too close. Then he left with a quick word, but Rashoumon barely had time to consider retreating before the tortoiseshell was back. His eyes widened when he saw the mouse that was laid down between them. He watched the tom back away, listened to his words, and carefully approached. He leaned down and sniffed at the mouse. It didn’t smell like crowfood. It was possible that it was poisoned in some manner. Did clan cats typically have poisoned food on standby for rogues? It sounded like a more difficult thing to keep up with than just being prepared to claw their faces off.
His stomach growled again, the hunger deep and aching. He sucked in a breath and survival instincts took over. He tore at the mouse, starting to eat away at it. He had nearly cleared away all but the pelt when the stranger offered his second question.
He glanced up at the clan cat suspiciously. He licked at his lips, clearing off the last of the blood. “…Rashoumon,” he finally stated. “What is yours, then?”

"Bird. You can call me Bird." It had been moons, seasons, even, since he'd last used his first name. It felt as comforting as he remembered, slipping off his tongue easily. The name itself carried a load of memories, meant more than it could convey; and, oddly, it was not he that knew the name best, but his mother. The giver of his name, in honor of her lost loves, the cats who had stayed with her until they couldn't. The losses that left her heart aching and her mind in disarray. Quillsplash shook the thoughts away and focused back onto the rogue before him. Rashoumon... what a strange name, even for a rogue. "Do you have any family or friends staying with you?" He asked the younger tom. Chances were this kit was abandoned by his mother, or got lost along the way, but there was always a chance that he did have somebody... somebody who wasn't all that great when it came to caring for him. Copper had loved him, he knew, but even now that left a sour taste in his mouth. Nothing about her love had felt like how love was supposed to feel like. How was love supposed to feel like, anyway?
