It was a long trip from the abandoned barn back to WindClan territory and Whisperear huffed and puffed as they finally entered the camp. It was sunset, having taken more hours to get the former-elders—well, they were elders again if they were in WindClan, aren’t they?—back, but Whisperear and Brackenwing had managed the journey all the same. It had been actually rather nice to be back in familiar territory. The long grasses, open plains, and sight of flowers were all nostalgic and nice.
And now in the center of camp, as Whisperear looked around…They really could see that there were so many faces they didn’t recognize. It made their stomach turn by they remained standing tall and stuck close to Brackenwing. It had been many moons, but this was still once their home. Perhaps it could be their home again.
That scent... she would have caught it anywhere, even in a gathering. Her head shot up like a rabbit, before swinging behind her, craving her neck before her body followed. Immediately, she was breathless, wordless. Did she die? Did Whisperear die, and they were bringing her to StarClan? Lunacy thoughts, there was no way that Brackenwing would do that for her. Yet, she was just excited to see her too. Her paws were running before her thoughts even caught up with her. A pace as swift as she used to run in her youth with a matching kit-like squee. Slowing to a skidding haunted, remembering her first child's fragility, the hardened mother felt warm as she breathlessly took in Whisperear.
"Whisperear... You're back!" She stretched up, mimicking a rabbit once more to rub her maw against her lost child's own. Purring, she joined the ground once more and took to licking their shoulder before turning away and regarding Brackenwing with a surprising amount of warmth. "And you, Brackenwing. Welcome back too." Tigerstar would let them back in. Or he'd be losing a life.
Stars above, her leg ached. Had the trip to the barn from Windclan camp taken them so long as the return? Brackenwing wasn't sure, but the sight of familiar rolling fields full of blooming flowers, the feeling of the warm breeze in her short, marbled fur... She could almost ignore the pain as she pushed through the entrance to Windclan's camp alongside Whisperear and her sons.
The sight of camp was both familiar and... Not. There were different faces that stared at them, startled by the appearance of two unfamiliar cats no doubt, but a small-framed calico was one face that Brackenwing recognized immediately. She had darted for Whisperear with excitement and a warmth that Brackenwing did not think she too would receive, and it made her just a little nervous. They had come home to a camp full of strange faces and memories that were less than friendly... But she had told Tigerstar and Sootstorm that she would try.
The calico turned toward her, "Hello, Coyotegrin," Their relationship had been a rather turbulent one, but Brackenwing felt... Relived to see that the expression on Coyotegrin's face was not one that she had expected, the greeting warmer than she thought it would've been, "Been a little while, hasn't it?"
You can’t fix the past, but you can change the future.
Sootstorm was close behind Brackenwing and Whisperear, having helped guide the two cats back to camp. He stood back as Whisperear greeted Coyotegrin, allowing his gaze to travel across his clanmates' faces. Most of them have never seen either of the elders before, and the same applied for Brackenwing and Whisperear. He'd have to introduce them all slowly to the elders. "Coyotegrin, please help make Whisperear and Brackenwing comfortable. The elder's den could use some cleaning, I'm sure. Send a few apprentices to fetch anything you might need. I trust you'll do your best to make them comfortable," He stepped forward once the greetings seemed to stop for a moment to instruct the she-cat. He was sure that she'd love a chance to welcome the two elders back, as well as catch up with them. Stars knows how much she must have missed them. In the mean time, he'd have to check with Hemlockfox if he could give the two elders a brief check up later.
