Sablestrike focused on the feeling of icy mud squishing under his paws as he lead the young apprentice further into their territory. His destination was the Pine Grove, though he had decided to abandon that idea about halfway there. This apprentice was taller than most her age, there was no need to bring her to the drier part of Shadowclan's land for training when most of their territory would have trouble swallowing her. If she couldn't handle a little water and mud then she wouldn't make it far as a warrior anyway, best to get her acclimated to her territory as soon as possible.

Pushing past some tall grasses the tom entered a tiny clearing barely large enough to hold the both of them. Turning to Hazelpaw, Sablestrike spoke for the first time since their departure. "I'm sure you've notice already, but there's a shortage of prey right now. Instead of wasting your energy in a spar we'll be doing something that benefits out clan. Go catch something and bring it back to me."

Hazelpaw stopped trotting and nodded obediently. "Yes, Sablestrike," she meowed. The freezing cold stung her fur, but she persevered through it. With a flick of her tail, she exited the clearing and dropped her haunches into a low crouching stance. Her eyes darted around, searching for prey to bring to her new mentor. She closed her eyes, still trying to persist through the weather. The tall ferns covered her brown pelt, which gave her an advantage in catching prey, though she wouldn't let this advantage lower her guard.

Hazelpaw heard a rustling sound from a pine tree. She didn't think much of it, but suddenly an owl swooped from the tree and skimmed its rather sharp talons through Hazelpaw's shoulder. Hazelpaw attempted to crouch to avoid being carried off, but the wound cut deep into her shoulder. Blood slowly followed, trickling down her foreleg like a waterfall slowly making its way down her side. She raised herself from her stance and growled, obviously irked. She turned around and faced the owl, wanting to kill it at that instant, but she felt the wound dig deeper into her shoulder. It ached. Hazelpaw, striked the owl with her unsheathed claws, and hissed at it.

Hazelpaw used front paw strike, dealing 6 HP.

The sound of flapping wings and the scuffling that ensued alerted the tom that Hazelpaw's hunt hadn't gone well. Paws rushed toward where the apprentice had disappeared with ease and Sablestrike was quick to find Hazelpaw warding off her attacker. He would have to scold her for not calling out for him later, but for now he would help her deal with the predator. Sablestrike hid in the grasses waiting patiently for the owl to swoop in for another attack on the apprentice, and when it did he leapt! Powerful muscles pushed the deputy through the air in an arc above Hazelpaw, intercepting the avian without problem. The poor thing had probably assumed Hazelpaw was alone, how wrong it was. Claws sunk into the owl's wings as he pinned it to the ground, allowing his apprentice a safer opportunity to attack.
