Last night, in the darkest corners of Littlekit's mind, she had experienced a nightmare about none other than mushrooms.
They had loomed over her, their vicious shadows covering her in darkness, bearing fangs that could only belong to the likes of a tiger or a panther. They had chased her for a seemingly endless amount of time until she had woken up that morning to see that her limbs were practically sprawled out in her nest. She must've been kicking in her sleep. She quickly pulled herself together, clearing her throat and looking around the nursery quickly to ensure that nobody else had witnessed her in such a state. The kit needed some fresh air. She skirted along the walls of the nursery before ducking out and letting out the biggest sigh of relief once the sunlight hit her pelt. Those cursed mushrooms had kept her in the dark for too long.
She sat down in the patch of sunlight to close her eyes and catch her breath before she looked up and saw the purest form of evil right in front of her very eyes.
Mushrooms.
There had to at least be three of them growing in a small patch somewhere near the nursery, and Littlekit could clearly see how they had looked in her nightmare with their intimidating height and their razor sharp teeth. She let out a scream, jumping backward and unsheathing her tiny kit claws.
"HELP! HELP! THE MUSHROOMS ARE HERE! HIDE YOUR KITS! HIDE YOUR MOTHERS!" She shrieked, crouching down and eyeing the fungi as if she'd have a solid chance against them.
With a startled jolt, Maplekit tumbled out of the grass patch she had been hiding in. The fluffy brown and white kit had concealed herself within the tall blades of green in hopes of stalking the cats in camp. However, the sudden loud yowling had quickly drawn her attention away. Someone's in trouble!
"Who's there? What's happened?! Help is here!" Maplekit hurtled to the source of the noise at the speed of light.
It was another kit! Maplekit took a brave stance next to this other kit following her gaze to... a patch of mushrooms?

HELP! HELP! THE MUSHROOMS ARE HERE! HIDE YOUR KITS! HIDE YOUR MOTHERS! The cry could be heard through the entire camp, even piercing the elder's den where Shrewpaw had been put to work removing ticks. As soon as the call for help had reached her ears the golden apprentice had bolted from the den, leaving an angry elder that called out for her to return and finish what she had started. There would be time for that later! Dayquill would keep the ornery tom at bay while she did what needed to be done!
Like a streak of lightning the apprentice rushed to the kit's side, green eyes immediately snapping to the villain that stood before them. "Fear not, Shrewstar of Birdclan has arrived! I needn't assemble the other leaders, we can take care of this threat to camp by ourselves!" Stars, it was like she was a kit again! Kits these days knew how to have fun, Shrewpaw's idea of fun at their age had involved bird watching. Still a rewarding hobby, but not exactly what a kit should be doing.
"I have with me a mushroom's weakness, mouse bile!" Shrewpaw raised a paw to show off the bile that still coated one of her paws. It stunk immensely, but that's what made it potent! The molly batted at the oddly shaped menace, each whack as fast as a thunderbolt.
Echopaw had been removing mouse bile from some mice to then give to the apprentice's working on assisting the elders when he heard one of the newest kittens scream and pierced his ears all the way over through the medicine den. His ears perked and he mumbled something to Fawnshine about checking out the commotion. Echopaw moved swiftly, pushing his way to the front of the crowd that had gathered only to sigh in relief as he realized it was only a mushroom. And not a poisonous one - to his knowledge anyways.
Echopaw looked at his newest friend Shrewpaw and twitched his whiskers in amusement. He didn't remember learning about mouse bile being a weakness of mushrooms, they seemed to grow no matter what the condition of their environment. "If it was alive before, it surely isn't now, yes?" he meowed, a laugh bubbling in his throat as he watched the apprentice evicerate the mushroom.
So much happened in such a short span of time that Nettlekit had barely opened his eyes before his little body was sent into a panic, only hearing hide your kits, hide your mothers. What was happening?
The ginger kit scrambled to his paws, sleepily staring out of the nursery entrance at the commotion. Within moments it became clear the cry was nothing more than the other kits playing, his heart rate beginning to slow down. Leaders? Mushrooms? He was sure he was awake.
“Mushrooms?” He mumbled through a yawn, shaking down his pelt. It was wild and ungroomed, as though he had been dragged through brambles. He would learn pride in time, for now he was curious. Nettlekit watched in awe as one of the apprentices fended off the mushrooms, shouting, “you’re so brave!”
"You're on your own, kid. You've always had been."
"You come away with a great little story of a mess of a dreamer with the nerve to adore you."
Thrushnose had been laying inside the warriors' den, his tail curled peacefully around his figure as he took an afternoon nap to rest himself after a recent hunt. That was, until an ear-piercing shriek of a kit-like voice jolted him awake, senses on high alert for danger. Though, as odd as it was, he smelt no signs of actual potential danger; having Echopaw already racing in alarm to check out the situation. What seemed to be a concerning call for emergency soon revealed itself as an unpleasant dream clouding young Littlekit's mind, his gaze softening down at the she-kit in relief. Thank the Stars no one was hurt.
All things considered, the tom found it quite amusing how 'Shrewstar', the apparent, newer addition to their supposed 'Birdclan' was now protecting the kit from harm with... mousebile? Questionable, but he let the cats have their fun. "Careful, Shrewpaw—star," He grinned, correcting himself, "That mousebile is incredibly potent. If not handled correctly, it can leave your paw stained for quite a long while. You've made a great sacrifice to protect Littlekit from the mushrooms' harm." He chuckled, playing along with the younger cat's act of bravery.
Blazefang padded over, giving her daughter a lick on the head. “Good job, Shrewstar,” she purred. “You fought those mushrooms bravely, and made the kits feel better. You’ll be a good mentor someday.” Blazefang couldn’t help but see a bit of herself in her daughter, the mushroom-busting taking her back to the Bushface days with her own apprentices.
Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times.
Littlekit wasn't surprised when quite a few cats rushed to her aid. She could feel the fur on the back of her neck begin to raise. Mushrooms were a genuine threat that needed to be purged from ThunderClan's borders, and she was relieved when Shrewpaw immediately began to clear the fungi with the mouse bile. The scent was horrendous, but certainly that would be enough to frighten the terrifying mushrooms away. She let her little kit claws slip back into their sheaths before she sighed in exasperation. That wouldn't be the last of them... more would grow, and Littlekit would be there to fight them off before they could hurt any of her Clanmates.
"That was amazing, Shrewstar!" Littlekit gushed, following Nettlekit in giving praise. She cleared her throat once again before announcing to the crowd that had made its way to the scene, "NEVER FEAR, THUNDERCLAN! THE THREAT HAS BEEN ELIMINATED! You can, uh, un-hide your kits and your mothers now."
Littlekit had no idea that the older cats around her weren't afraid of the mushrooms. Most of the cats believed it to be a game, but she genuinely believed that the Clan had just been saved from a deadly enemy. She only just realized that there were two other kits in the fray. She looked at both Maplekit and Nettlekit with wide eyes. "Wait! Didn't I say hide your kits? You two could've been killed!" She exclaimed.
She was a kit herself, but that thought obviously went over her head.
Maplekit could only gape in adoration for the mighty apprentice. Her display of courage won a whole lot of points in her book. "Did you see how she attacked the mushrooms?! Shrewstar was like- hiYA hoo- hah! Take that you monstrous mushrooms!! She was so cool!" the kit mewed, bobbing her head in agreement with Nettlekit and Littlekit.
Littlekit's outburst to announce that the threat had been taken care of made Maplekit study her peer with interest. What a helpful thing to do! Upon being faced with a threat, this kit had immediately warned the others of danger. Maplekit decided she wanted to be friends with this kit.
The kit in question now seemed to be talking to them, so Maplekit took the opportunity to introduce herself. "Killed? I just thought I could help ya... Anyway, I'm Maplekit! Who'r you two?"

The assault had ended with shreds of mushroom scattered where they had stood. Shrewpaw was aware of cats gathering, but it wasn't until her attack had fully finished that the she-cat recognized who had joined them. "Ah, Thrushstar! Echostar!" Members of Birdclan had assembled to help the young kit in distress. Somehow that made Shrewpaw feel an extreme sense of pride, but the following praise that she received only served to make the apprentice shrink back slightly. Brave? Cool? Amazing? Stars! A bubbly feeling rose in her chest forcing out a nervous giggle as the golden molly absorbed the praise. This was all just a silly little game, but that didn't mean she couldn't feel good about all the fake praise!
"If the price I have to pay for saving my fellow clanmates is stained paws, then so be it! I- Uh... Hold on!" He was right! Shrewpaw had gotten herself too caught up in their game, but if she didn't clean the bile from her paws soon she'd be stuck with ugly stains for moons! The golden molly loped away from the group and out of camp, searching for a puddle or any water source she could use to clean the nasty stuff from her paws.
