Newleaf Restock [open SC herb hunt]

Looking at her soaked paws and then back to the ground of gathering warriors and apprentices, Harriertalon couldn't help but smile. Who would have thought she would go from helping find herbs, to being the very cat that asked others to help gather them! With the recent happenings, it was best to keep this as lighthearted as possible; the last thing anyone needed was more stress in this is tumultuous time.

"Alright, please be mindful that you don't put anything in your mouth unless you get the okay from me! That means no putting the darkest leaves or the brightest flowers anywhere near your teeth or tongue. NO BERRIES, especially!!" She made sure to carefully emphasize that this would not be tolerated, and everyone should be taking this very seriously.

"Flowers with these types of leaves paired with either the yellow flower or fluffy white ball, are one and the same: Dandelions. These wont kill you, but please ask me before gathering them."

Harriertalon found a dandelion! She's added it to the pile.

Tawnyshadow joined the medicine cat on the herb patrol. It was her first time on a herb hunt, but since it was Newleaf finding a bunch of leaves shouldn't be too hard, right? She pressed her nose to the dirt to experimentally sniff. Almost immediately, she found a small green plant with tiny yellow flowers. She gently nibbled the stem of the plant and after collecting a mouthful, deposited them at the pile. "Are these considered herbs?" She asked Harriertalon politely.

Badgermask couldn't help but be proud of her sister, becoming the new medicine cat. She had wasted no heartbeats in hesitation when Harriertalon had requested aid, even if she wasn't that familiar with some of the others who had joined as well. Her ears were perked as she padded after Harriertalon, listening to her sister's orders and warnings. It seemed simple enough - she didn't even need to know the herbs, just get Harriertalon's attention if she saw something that caught her eye...Which was for the best, because honestly all of the herbs looked nearly the same to her. A strong scent caught her nose as she glanced around, following it to a small patch of small green herbs. The leaves were small - rounded with the softest looking point. Leaning down to give it a sniff caused her to recoil - it was certainly the source at least. "I found something. Smells...Strong. Is this useful?" she asked, waving a paw towards the leaves, not wanting to risk even touching it without Harriertalon's assurance.

Badgermask has followed her nose and found a small patch of basil!

Moondancer trotted after the patrol. This wasn't her first time on such, but at least it wasn't with that rude oaf the clan called a medicine cat this time. Harriertalon had just become the new medicine cat apprentice, and while Moondancer couldn't imagine why, Harriertalon was... okay to be around, all things considered. She listened as the former warrior gave a few instructions, then broke away from the group, carefully searching the deep marshes while keeping an eye out for her clanmates.

After a bit of searching, Moondancer found some sort of plant that was stinky and foul-smelling. She knew better than to try collecting it herself, not that she'd ever deign to get her paws dirty over the plant, so glanced around for the medicine cat apprentice. The blue, star-shaped flowers almost looked pretty, but Moondancer was sure that was deceptive. "Harriertalon? Are these useful?"

Moondancer has found borage, not that she knows what it is.

Rookfire was more than happy to help gather herbs. There were a ton of cats anyways, but the black tuxedo knew that this was an important time to keep track of what was going on. As the patrol began searching for herbs, Rookfire wandered a bit further away from the rest of the patrol. Perhaps he could find ground that wasn't treaded on for old herbs.

As he made his way through the marshes, he noticed a group of tall purple-and-green stems sticking out of the marsh, their glossy green leaves making it clear to Rookfire what it was. Water hemlock. Quickly making his way back to Harriertalon, the black tuxedo made sure to talk to her about it (at least, after when she was done with her previous check). "Harriertalon, I found some water hemlock over that way." The black tuxedo pointed his tail towards the place. "If you want to see it to make sure it's not parsley, then I can take you to it."

Thalia spent quite a bit of her time gathering herbs- it was typically easier for her than hunting was, and still useful to ShadowClan. Today, though, was a bit different: she usually went out on her own, looking for herbs and flowers, but today she'd chosen to join a patrol. It would be nice, she thought, to interact a bit more with her Clanmates; she was aware that she'd been a bit distant lately.

Plus, this was being led not by the Clan's current medicine cat- who Thalia admittedly also didn't know all that well- but by her recently-appointed apprentice. While she wouldn't mind trying to befriend Burdockroot, it seemed like Harriertalon was more receptive to the company of others, and probably a better place to start if she wanted to make friends.

While she tended to look for pretty flowers, there was something that immediately caught her attention. "Harriertalon," she called, waiting for the medicine cat apprentice to finish whatever she was doing before. She gestured to the flowers, keeping her distance. "These are poisonous, aren't they?"

Well. She did know for certain that they were poisonous- and she thought she knew the name, but she wasn't sure. She spent enough time dealing with plants on her own that she had to know which ones weren't safe to touch.

It was sweet little Silverpaw who called out to her first, his fur dripping with the murky waters of the marshland. At his paws were the thin stalks and pink flower heads of coneflowers. One of her favourites, actually. All parts of this flower could be used for all kinds of ailments. Â "Well done, Silverpaw! All parts of the coneflower can be ingested. If you could, please remove these from the ground roots and all. Perfect for illnesses like whitecough and fighting infections."

Her eyes lingered on the silver tom, desperately trying to stop herself from asking how he was. If she were him, being asked that publicly like this would not only be embarrassing, but also infuriating.

The call of Tawnyshadow pulled her attention away Silverpaw, the mottled warrior having already pulled plants from the ground even after Harriertalon had given the warning of asking before putting anything in their mouths. She looked at Tawnyshadow in bewilderment before sighing,"Those are called Celadine... The juice of this plant is used to soothe damage eyes. Well done." Her tail flicked. "Reminder, everyone! Do NOT put anything in your mouth until I've inspected it!" The last thing she needed was someone to ingest poison on her first herb hunt without Burdockroot.

Next, it was her adorable sister Badgermask who called out. Catching the she-cat recoil from the scent of the small patch of green leaves at her feet, the medicine cat apprentice couldn't help but chuckle. "That would be basil. Smells terrible, but these are used to draw out venom. They wont hurt you if ingested, but they have no effect that way for any type of ailment. Badgermask, could you please collect them for me?"

"Are these useful?"
Her head swiveled to face Moondancer this time, her paws moving on their own to join her other sister. No matter what the herb was, she knew that, much like Batswarm, the molly would not be to keen on dirtying her paws for the cause (helping restock Burdockroots extensive hoard). "Borage! Pretty, aren't they? These are very helpful for queens who have just given birth."

Rookfire was the next on to call out, the former medicine cat approaching Harriertalon on his own. She smiled gratefully at him, thankful he was here to help, but that he wasn't overstepping her opportunity to learn. However, her blood ran cold at the mention of what he had found: water hemlock. A very deadly plant that was not discriminatory in who it sent to Silverpelt should they not be quick to act. "U-Um... Yes, I'd like to see it before we do anything." Placing Moondancer's find alongside the growing collection, she followed the tuxedo tom.

Upon arrival, it was definitely not parsley. "I'm sure you know how to carry these, but I'll say it anyway: don't put a single part of this plant in your mouth. Use a larger leaf to carry these, and be careful. I know you have experience in this, but I still need you to be mindful."

"These are poisonous, aren't they?"
Oh, StarClan. Not too far off, stood Thalia with the exact same bushel of poisonous plant: water hemlock. At this point, Harriertalon's nerves were beginning to get the best of her. It was time she wrapped up this herb hunt before the less experienced cats got hold of something they shouldn't. Thankful it had been Rookfire and Thalia to have been the ones to find the water hemlock, Harriertalon raised her voice, "Alright everyone! I think that's enough for one day... Please gather what you've found and help carry them back to the medicine den!"

In a whisper to Thalia, "I'll gather these for you. Could you make sure everyone gets back to camp? I think Burdockroot was mentioning she wanted to talk with you soon." The medicine cat apprentice would gather only a few more of this dangerous plant... Not that they would really need it...
