Subject: Rebuilding the Elder's Den [Birdstar/Juniperpaw] Tue 24 Jan 2023 - 7:54
Stonepaw stared at the bundles of moss and sticks and discarded tree branches for a moment, not quite sure where to begin, in truth. Skyclan's patrols had been busy, and camp was slowly, slowly being cleaned up and restored. With the buzz of activity and dens being rebuilt however, the camp looked to be in quite the state of disarray... Organized, chaotic disarray. The moss couldn't be used until the den was actually in place along with the nests that would go inside it, so for now, the moss got set aside. The den walls, the roof... That would be the harder part, Stonepaw expected. And staring at the mountain of work wouldn't make it go by any faster.
Of course, it wasn't quite a mountain of work, and her clanmates - Birdstar and Juniperpaw, neither of whom Stonepaw knew all that well - had been assigned the same task as her. In a way, it was comforting to see the clan's leader and deputy working so hard to help their clanmates, but Stonepaw had little idea of how to approach her own denmates half the time, let alone Skyclan's high ranks.

Juniperpaw
Juniperpaw padded over to what used to be the elder’s den, excitement bubbling from every step. She had never gotten to see SkyClan in its full glory, rescued and brought in before the rebuilding begun. She wasn’t sure exactly what had happened in the first place, only told little details from Birdstar and Wolfblossom, but regardless of what had transpired, Juniperpaw wanted to be as helpful as she could possibly be. This is her first chance to show SkyClan that this new apprentice could be worth something, and Juniperpaw was more than ready to show it.
Rounding on the discarded pile of twigs and moss, the ragdoll molly regarded a fellow apprentice she had never met before— a thick furred, gray smoke molly stared down at the mess of branches just as Juniperpaw was. She seemed much less enthralled by the task then Juniperpaw was, but that didn’t stop the apprentice from attempting to introduce herself.
”Hello!” she greeted softly as she approached the other she-cat, fluffy tail raised jauntily in greeting. ”You must be Stonepaw! I’m Juniperpaw, but I assume you must know that too…”
Breaking her berry blue gaze from Stonepaw to the remains of the elder’s den, Juniperpaw began to wonder where her green-eyed mother figure and leader was. Birdstar was hardly ever late to anything, at least in Juniperpaw’s mind, yet both of the apprentices had gotten here before her…

Birdstar
Though they'd only been back for a few sunrises, camp was well on its way to looking like a proper home again. Everyone had been hard at work since their return, and their efforts clearly showed. There was still plenty of damage left to be undone (Birdstar hid a wince when she looked at the dens that had been all-but completely ruined), but they were on their way. It was a good feeling, to sit under the Tallbranch and watch her Clanmates work, watch the patrols coming and going. As her gaze drifted across camp, she spotted a pair of apprentices sitting by the ruined elder's den, and considered them for a moment before letting out a quiet, surprised oh! She was supposed to be helping them today, that was right. Rising quickly to her paws, Birdstar padded over to join them.
"I don't think I need to introduce myself, do I?" The large molly said warmly as she got closer. Her tail flicked over Juniperpaw's shoulder in greeting, and to Stonepaw she gave a respectful nod. Though she wasn't as close with Juniperpaw as she was Rainpaw (yet? a wondering thought for her to consider later), she was a little more familiar with the ragdoll– Stonepaw, she had only really spoken to in passing. At least this would be a good chance to become more familiar with SkyClan's youth while they worked.
Thankfully, at least some of the den was still standing. That made their work considerably easier. Nodding to the collection of materials, Birdstar mewed, "Let's start with the bigger branches. They'll be good and sturdy for the walls." As she spoke, she bent down, gingerly picking up one of the fallen limbs. It set precariously against the skeleton of broken wood and shrubbery, and it wobbled briefly when Birdstar let go of it, but it leaned into place and didn't collapse the entire thing as she worried it might. Moving to pick up another branch and repeat the process, she idly hummed, "How's training going for you both? I'm sure it's been difficult with everything, but still."

"Hi, uhm, yeah. That's me. You're one of the newer apprentices, right?" Stonepaw offered an awkward greeting, silently cursing herself for having spoken before her mind caught up with her tongue. Thankfully Birdstar's approach and warmer greeting saved her from that blunder. The fluffy apprentice dipped her head to the leader respectfully. Picking up another branch, she carefully moved it into place alongside the one Birdstar had moved.
"Training is going well. It feels strange to have to learn the territory though." So much of her training had been done within the tight, cramped confines of fourtrees and the surrounding area. "It's bigger than I thought it would be. But Stormwatcher's been showing me everything." Her mentor, for their awkward and not-great early training, had found ways to surprise Stonepaw. He really wasn't as horrible as she had expected, not after saving Mistpaw from that twoleg trap. Training after that had gone... Smoothly, actually. She was almost sure the clan's deputy was watching them closely, but she didn't seem displeased by anything. Quite the opposite, actually.

”I am! It’s nice to meet you, maybe we can train together sometime!” Juniperpaw mewed to Stonepaw, trying not to show too much enthusiasm. Stonepaw seemed like the silent, thoughtful type— Juniperpaw worried her excitement would scare her off.
At Birdstar’s appearance Juniperpaw jumped to stand by her side, the ragdoll molly regarding her adoptive mother figure with a wide smile; ”Training is going great! I’ve been learning tons of new things and I get to spend more time with Rainpaw than I used to!” Juniperpaw hadn’t been able to spend as much time with Birdstar as she had with Wolfblossom, which upset the poor molly a little more than she wanted to admit. She loved and respected both of her adoptive mothers equally, but Birdstar… Birdstar was a little more of an enigma to her. Juniperpaw couldn’t wait to get to know her more. Who knows, maybe they would one day be as close as Birdstar and Rainpaw were— a thought that kept Juniperpaw looking towards the future instead of the past. Her actual mother may now be a passing memory, but these cats she had surrounding her now.. they may be her entire life.
Juniperpaw watched Birdstar as she began to piece the elder den back together, carefully and one branch at a time. It looked like tedious and boring work, if the molly had to be truthful, but she would never complain— she had to be the best apprentice and future warrior she could possibly be, especially in front of Birdstar. Following her adoptive mother’s example, Juniperpaw took the initiative and stepped away from where she stood with Stonepaw, she quickly scanned the area for a smaller branch to move. She found one quickly, broken off from a much larger branch, and she happily took it up in her mouth before placing it down next to Birdstar’s own branches. It didn’t wobble like hers did— it didn’t have the weight— but it leaned upright on the others just as she was shown. Pride swelled up in Juniperpaw— it was such a small task, sure, but she was being helpful! Her new favorite pastime had to be helping her clan.

Birdstar
Birdstar nodded along as the two apprentices talked, continuing to set branches in place as they each answered in turn. To Juniperpaw in particular, she offered an approving hum as smaller limbs were slotted into place. "I'm glad you're spending more time with your brother. I bet he has lots to teach you, even if he's still an apprentice," she purred softly. Juniperpaw was so loudly and strikingly different than he was, but they'd gotten along famously since the little ragdoll had been found. It made her happy, to see his spirits finally brightened, and just as grateful that Juniperpaw had settled in so easily. Warmth still lit her eyes when she turned to face Stonepaw.
"That's good." The note of surprise in her mew, though small, was hardly subtle. The petty, kittish part of her hadn't been expecting much from Stormwatcher as a mentor, even when Wolfblossom told her otherwise. She hardly doubted her sister, but hearing his apprentice's confirmation made her finally accept that he wasn't entirely the lazy, uncaring oaf that she thought. He'd never been a bad cat, before or after losing Crookedpaw, and maybe an active paw in raising the youth of the Clan would be enough to push him into being a model warrior. One day, at least. "It's a mess now, but give it time. Once we've rebuilt more, cleaned up the forest more, you'll feel more comfortable." To them both, she added, "Wait until new-leaf. I've heard its beautiful, seeing everything bloom after all the snow. You'll really enjoy the territory, then."

"Oh, sure." Stonepaw offered Juniperpaw. It would be... nice, she supposed, to spend time with apprentices that weren't just her sister, right? She listened as the other apprentice answered the leader, clearly she was pleased with her own training, that was good. Birdstar too, seemed happy to hear about how their training was progressing.
But even Birdstar sounded surprised by Stonepaw's admission. Had everyone in the clan really been expecting Stormwatcher to fail as a mentor? Was he really that disliked? Not that it was really Stonepaw's problem if he was, because she wasn't her mentor, but what if cats thought she would turn out the same way? While she thought on that, Stonepaw continued working sticks into place. Birdstar continued talking, pulling her mind away from her own thoughts, and Stonepaw merely nodded. "I hope so." She mewed. She didn't like the strangeness of her training, it felt like some of the younger apprentices knew Skyclan's own territory better than she did... But she would catch up to them, on that front. She wanted to be more used to it, and Birdstar was right that about the camp, too. At least that they were all helping to make a difference with.

Juniperpaw’s ears stood upright at the word “new-leaf”, excited eyes bright. ”I can’t wait for new-leaf! I’m so tired of the cold and the snow— I just want it all to end!” She left out the part that it reminded her of her mother, that the cold nipped at her face and at her heart in ways she didn’t like to think of. She had to keep looking forward; one day there will be green grass and leaves, birds singing in the air and the sun will shine, warm and welcoming onto Juniperpaw’s face. And then, maybe, she can stop thinking about her mother. Maybe then she could finally just live in the moment.
”Birdstar?” Juniperpaw prodded after a moment of silence between the three mollies. ”What's it like, being a warrior? Is it hard?”
