Subject: Unbreakable [Birdstar] Mon 12 Feb 2024 - 16:50
They had returned from all the chaos of the lake, and Wolfblossom felt like she'd had only a few moments to savor the joy of that before reality had come crashing down upon her once more. The camp was coming along nicely, her clanmates were better fed and healthier than they had been in moons, and yet the tension remained, heavy and thick in the air. Riverclan, Thunderclan... Dread sat heavy in Wolfblossom's stomach despite the smiles and kind words she offered her clanmates.
She had returned from a border patrol, and all had been quiet along the fallen oak and the river. The silence had not been nearly as reassuring as Wolfblossom would have liked it to be. She had decided to hunt on the way back, try to clear her mind. A squirrel and blackbird to show for her efforts, Wolfblossom dropped the bird onto the fresh kill pile and turned, scanning the cats that were in camp.
A small smile tugged at the corner of her mouth when she spotted Birdstar near the camp's edge, and without a second thought Wolfblossom was padding in her sister's direction. Things had been busy and hectic enough lately, but Birdstar seemed to be doing much better from her own prolonged bout with illness. Not spending enough time with another sibling was not a mistake that Wolfblossom would make again.
"Squirrel?" Wolfblossom offered, lightly nudging the prey in her sister's direction.

"Some days end when I need a few friends."
Birdstar SkyClan | she/her
Being in the walls of camp quieted some of her eternal anxiety, even if only marginally. Birdstar was grateful for the security that knowing they were surrounded by familiar walls--familiar land, that she and many of her Clanmates knew like the backs of their paws--brought, however tenuous it might have been. Had Perchstar and Mottlestar not been sick-- or if they'd been deluded enough to attempt an attack while they were --fighting at the strange lake territories would have been, at best, difficult. Even if the forest they claimed was similar to their home, it wasn't; Birdstar's pads weren't melded to the clefts in the stone and bark there. But when war finally, inevitably descended on them here... Retreat would be easier, if necessary. There was nowhere a defector could run that a trained SkyClan warrior wouldn't catch them first. If Perchstar's quest led them deep enough into the forest, she would be forcing her own warriors to suffer a disadvantage from having to fight around roots, extensive bramble growths, thick-trunked trees. Perchstar was lucky that ThunderClan bodies would be beside them to supplement the fight.
Approaching pawsteps made Birdstar blink and look up. Always, she was worried someone came to bring her more terrible news... but it was only Wolfblossom. Which didn't ease the tension from her immediately, but when Birdstar noticed the smile that opened around her squirrel and the laxness in Wolfblossom's shoulders, she let her own relax. They spoke and shared tongues and patrolled together often, of course, but with all the recent turmoil and health crises... how long had it been since they'd really just sat? Too long.
Birdstar swept her tail back to allow Wolfblossom more space beside her and dipped her head in quiet greeting. "Sure," she purred softly. Birdstar hadn't eaten yet that day; there would be no better time than now. She shifted to settle down properly and took a careful bite of the squirrel once she was comfortable. After she swallowed, Birdstar looked to her sister and mewed, "Are the herbs working well? It looks like they are. I hope you're finding time to look after yourself. ...somehow."

Her poor sister looked pensive, likely lost in her own thoughts until Wolfblossom's approach. Wolfblossom couldn't blame her, of course, but seeing her relax at least a little eased some of the tension in the back of her mind. For now at least, though she knew it wouldn't last for either of them. Not for long. It never did, these days.
"I'm alright, the cough is still lingering but I feel fine. It'll clear up. You?" She replied, dropping to the ground beside her sister. "I can't say I liked the idea of three medicine cats, but they've been doing good work. It seems like they've been having an easier time now that we're back on familiar land with familiar herbs. And the apprentices are coming along well." The recent warrior ceremonies that bolstered their ranks were proof of that. As happy as it made Wolfblossom to see them, each one filled her with dread. Should Riverclan and Thunderclan attack, the young apprentices and newest warriors would be in danger. It was their duty to help defend the clan, but the idea still bothered her. And to have to defend the clan from the consequences of actions they held no part in... She didn't want to see her clanmates hurt. She didn't want to let her mother go, though. And her son...
"The weather's warming up a bit... It'll be newleaf before we know it." Anything to distract from the thoughts plaguing her mind.

Birdstar nodded while her sister spoke, relieved and at ease with the assurance Wolfblossom was doing better. "Neither did I, though the extra set of paws is certainly apparent. Thymelight and Hemlockfox are both excellent medicine cats." Absently, her gaze slid toward the medicine den, as if expecting one of the apprentices to show up at the utterance of their name. When neither of them did, her tail flicked through the snow and Birdstar went on, "Thymelight in particular--and yes, I'm doing better. I went to see her when she was giving out herbs recently." What a blessing it was, to finally be rid of that wretched fever and the cough that came with. If she could appreciate nothing else in her life now, she could appreciate that.
"Are they?" She hummed, head inclining curiously toward Wolfblossom. "I haven't been able to spend as much time with them as I want to recently. I'm glad I have you around to look after the apprentices." Birdstar huffed with faint-but-present humor. "It's good that they're coming along well, though. I'm sure they'll all make fine warriors. Some of them must be ready for their ceremonies." And where would their ceremonies lead them? Would any of the newly-named warriors, claws still soft despite their rank, find themselves caught in the throes of war? Would any of them bleed--would any of them die?
Birdstar shook her head to banish the thoughts. "New-leaf... mm." Would their youngest warriors live to see new-leaf for the first time? How many of them would get to watch all the little green shoots unfurling from the earth, banishing the gray drab with the return of full color? "I won't be looking forward to the humidity," Birdstar eventually snorted, the humor forced. She needed to quit with counting bodies before they came. Their omniscient ancestors likely couldn't tell the difference between obsessive hinge and wishful thinking. Birdstar wanted to be present, for one moment of her life, rather than lost in the twisting paths of her thoughts. "But... it'll be good to see the forest alive again. I can suffer the humidity to watch all the apprentices see the trees bloom for the first time."

"Have you seen Thymelight's flower crowns? She has a way with them, it seems. It should bode well for her ability to find herbs come the warm weather... And they're pretty." She was glad to hear that Birdstar was doing better, she certainly sounded it. "Good, you needed that. I thought I was going to have to drag you to the medicine den. I'm glad you got help." She added.
As her sister spoke, she could all but feel the undercurrent of worry lurking behind her forced humor. "Yeah... The humidity is gross. Those with short fur have it lucky." Of course, they complained about just the opposite in the cold leafbare. "But I won't mind not freezing my ears off... For a little while, at least. And the apprentices who have only known that miserable lake and frigid mountain... They're in for a real shock."
"They'll be okay, though. We'll all be okay." Oh, how desperately she wanted it to be true.

"I have," Birdstar answered. The display Thymelight had made with them would be hard to forget anytime soon. "And I agree." She'd had the same thought when she went to investigate Thymelight's flower crowns. If the young medicine cat could pluck out plants only useful for color, when everything was still and dead, then Birdstar had absolute faith in her ability to find proper herbs in any season. Warrior life had never been Thymelight's destiny; she was shining in her new role.
New-leaf was her favorite season: the temperatures were mild, and while the humidity and frequent rains are irksome, it wasn't as bad as snow or burning heat. The reawakening of life was just another reason to appreciate it so much. "They sure will. I'll be joining them in marveling, I'm sure." A soft laugh left her and Birdstar shook her head. She would, if... blinking, she looked more directly at Wolfblossom. For a heartbeat, she just studied her sister, taking in the pale shades of her coat; then, when she was satisfied, she leaned over and pressed her nose to Wolfblossom's shoulder.
"Hey," she whispered gently, "they will be. They'll get through this--we'll get through this. We always do, right?"

Wolfblossom watched as her sister laughed... And then the humor fled, replaced by a more serious set to her expression as she leaned forward and pressed against the deputy. She had hoped to cheer Birdstar up, to give them both a distraction from... All of this. But they each knew the other too well for such to work. She was grateful for it though.
"We do." She agreed softly, "We'll get through this storm too. I promise you." Wolfblossom mewed, leaning into Birdstar's fluffy pelt.
