In all her travels, Poppy had never once been swept up and trapped; but as she'd ventured further from home that was exactly what had happened. She rarely ventured away from green and grassy fields and trails, but one curious investigation of what the locals called the Twolegplace had ended with her where she was now: in a dirty, overrun nest, surrounded by others who had fallen to the same fate.
There was food, sure- if you could count it as food. But there was no open air, or soft grass, or pretty flowers; she hadn't seen her namesake in what felt like moons. It was almost enough to make her homesick. But she was a wanderer at heart, and she wanted adventure- even when that adventure led her into what seemed to be a kind of prison.
The one real benefit was the company, even if there was far too much of it for the space they shared. She'd always liked meeting new cats, seeing what they were like and where they were from, and how it was different from her own experiences. With this many cats, there would surely be a wealth of stories, right?
So she'd padded up to a nearby cat, because the only way to learn something like that was to talk to them. "Uh... Hi!"

Hartstep was sore.
Her bones ached in a way they hadn’t since the torrential rains that had pushed ShadowClan out of their very territory. Maybe it was the way she’d been thrown into the silver bramble, or the odd injury they’d given her, slicing her ear (not that there was much of it left to slice- heh. The thought of a victory, even such a small one, filled her with bitter satisfaction). At any rate, all she wanted to do was curl up in a corner and sleep. But no. The unutterably stupid Twoleg kept trying to give her food that smelled weird, and seemed worried when she refused it. Hartstep didn’t care. She’d lived long enough on less food than what she now managed to steal from others without them noticing. She would not die here, ignobly, with a total loss of dignity, in a Twoleg nest. No. No way.
She was stretching in the cluttered space, watching out for the Twoleg with a wary eye, when a cat just… came up to her? She- this wasn’t a Clan cat. Hartstep hadn’t seen any, yet, though admittedly she’d been here for scant time, and spent most of it hiding. Why- well, who cared. She’d need help to escape, as much as she hated to admit it.
“Hello…” she echoed, mildly surprised that this kittypet would approach her, the scarred, imposing, tall old molly instead of some fat kittypet… but this wasn’t a kittypet. She- ever-so-faintly, she smelled of freedom, of the outside, a smell Hartstep herself was quickly losing. Perhaps she was a Clanner, just one she’d never met? “I’m Hartstep. You?” The easiest way to find out.

Harrierpaw had held complete silence the entire grueling trip to... wherever this was. Her back paw had gotten stuck in between the vines of her confine, ripping out a nail that throbbed every now and again. It was wrapped in... something she could only relate to a thick leaf. Her ears were flattened against her head. This place was... cramped. It was hard to find a place to gather her thoughts alone in here!
It was upon hearing a name that sounded like a Clan name that her ears shot straight up and she hurriedly turned her head to scan. Her green eyes locked onto the two cats speaking nearby. She limped over. "Hartstep...? You wouldn't be from a Clan would you? My name is Harrierpaw." She nodded at the cat with Hartstep. Poppy, was it? Maybe not a Clan cat, but shen didn't want to ignore her just because of that. "Um... where are we?"

Poppy's ears twitched as the cats around her talked of clans. It sounded- familiar, somehow, but she couldn't place it; maybe something one of the cats at home had talked about while she was younger? Some of them had traveled further than she thought she could ever hope to, after all.
"Hartstep," she nodded. "Harrierpaw. Weird names! Not bad," she immediately moved to clarify. "Just... Weird. To me, anyway. I'm Poppy! Sorry. I usually introduce myself first, promise!"
Poppy was a nice, normal name; even this far from home, most cats didn't bat an eye when she said it. Well, not unless they were batting their eyes at something else she'd said, usually.
She pawed at the ground for a moment, making a face at the state of it. Oh, how she missed grass; the green and the lushness of it. Even this time of year, when it grew dull and brown beneath her paws- that was better than this.
"So, this'll probably sound super weird to you," she said. "But you can probably tell I'm not from around here... What's a clan, exactly?"
Maybe some kind of an explanation would jog her memory. She'd definitely heard something about them from somewhere.

A young black cat limped over- and at her words Hartstep felt a surge of new energy go through her. Not a WindClanner- she’d surely recognize another from the moor- but still, a young cat, so far away from home. She reminded her of Russetpaw… just a little… the old molly smiled, slightly. “Yes, youngling. It’s good to find others here. WindClan. You?” The scents of the Clans had been mingled enough at Fourtrees, but now, she could hardly differentiate between those who were truly free and the kittypets who had never been outside this nest. She… had Russetpaw mentioned a Harrierpaw? Quite likely- but then Russetpaw talked so much and so quickly that Hartstep simply couldn’t keep up. Russetpaw certainly had not gotten that from her great-great-grandmother.
Hartstep turned, slightly, to the cat who had addressed her first. Not a Clanner: that much was obvious, her name was half-finished and dangling… but still, perhaps, an ally. She dipped her head in greeting. “A Clan is a group of cats who look out for one another… yet it is much more than that. It is freedom- living as the cats of old did once, hunting for ourselves and fighting to protect our territory.” For a second, Hartstep paused, letting the youngling contribute whatever she wanted to. Then, with a quick change of subject- “Do either of you know a way out?” Preferably one that included giving the Twoleg a thrashing… though she’d be amenable to just escaping… returning to WindClan, and to the moor.

Harrierpaw sat down rather heavily, kicking her back foot out further that usual with the awkward weird leaf bandage on it that had begun to bleed through. It was aching and was beginning to drain her. "I'm from ShadowClan." She managed.
The ShadowClan apprentice understood what Poppy meant by their names being weird; Harrierpaw wasn't always her name, and she also remembered thinking clan names were odd. For an outsider, Poopy was a very pretty and normal name. "Your name is nice, too! I think you're the first outsider I've met so far." She allowed Hartstep to answer the clan question, feeling as though she didn't know enough to really add anything to it.
The question Harrierpaw had been dying to ask since this whole chat began came from Hartstep. Where were they? She black furred apprentice look around, nothing in this place looked even slightly familiar. "If I did, I'd be out of here already..." She sighed, looking to Poppy in hopes that maybe she would know.

eveningmoon
warrior of thunderclan
Eveningmoon paced as best he could, limping as usual with a bitter scowl on his face. How could he let himself get taken by Twolegs? He was supposed to be a strong ThunderClan warrior. What would Mottlestar think? Growling to himself, he turned to see a group of gathered cats talking quietly. Two smelled definitely of Clan cats, although with all the jumbled scents in the room, he couldn't quite tell from which. He knew they weren't ThunderClan, though. The other...an outsider. Instinctively he bristled, but once he thought about it logically... They were all in this dump together. In-fighting between them would do them no good.
The tuxedo tom limped over to join the conversation. "Hey, couldn't help but hear talk of Clans. Eveningmoon, from ThunderClan." He nodded towards the other cats, his gaze lingering on Poppy just for a moment. Piercing blue eyes trailed down ot the bandage on the apprentice's leg. With a wistful smile, he lifted his own scarred, lame leg. "Hey, we're twins!"

Rowanpaw
The trip from Fourtrees was a blur, as was... however much time had passed. Rowanpaw wasn't sure if it had even been a day yet, or if it had been multiple, or if seasons and seasons of his life had slipped by. He'd been conscious for much of it, he thought so, at least, but whatever he had been awake for fled his memory as soon as the experience was over. From one cold cage to another, blurry faces of twolegs swimming before him, lots of pain and fear and talking himself out of throwing up.
And now he was here. It was a horrible place. If it were not for the fact that his stomach growled and his body ached, Rowanpaw would have been convinced he was dead. Or maybe he was, and his terrible temperament had gotten him banished to the Dark Forest, and the cats that wandered there were doomed to starve and ache for all eternity. What a miserable afterlife. He lamented quietly as he shoved himself to his paws. He did not want to explore this place. It reeked with the smell of a thousand cats, with sweet and stale twoleg food, with dust and dirt. But the mix of scents was not the worst part– no, the worst part was the noise. There was always noise. Whether it was that stupid twoleg bumbling about, or trilling at the cats that milled here in that weird tone, or trilling after him in particular, or, oh, the other cats were the worst part. Mewing, meowing, hissing, yowling, spitting, coughing, growling. Whatever noise a cat could make, someone made it.
He was about to wedge himself into one of the wooden boxes with their swinging entrances in hopes of escaping it when near chatter caught his attention. It wasn't just the idle drabble he'd gotten used to hearing; it was Clan names, warrior names, something he knew. Rowanpaw hadn't spoken with another Clan cat since he'd been pulled from Fourtrees. And one name in particular caught his attention and made him spin towards the chatter immediately: Poppy. He'd feared for a moment that in all the chaos his mother had been grabbed too. It was hard to tell whether he felt relief or misery when he saw no familiar faces in the gathered group.
Familiarity had never been a barrier for him before, even though it felt like an insurmountable barrier now. He wanted to speak with these cats as much as he wanted to be thrown into the river to learn to swim right before it froze. But even though he did not want to, and he could feel his agitation already mounting (even if it was not at that group directly), he knew he would need them. He did not know where he was; that older molly that announced herself from WindClan probably knew everything. He would need companions if he were to get out of here and return to the forest alive. He could recognize that, as much as it left a sour taste in his mouth. Clearing his throat, Rowanpaw gathered himself and puffed out his chest as he swaggered over to the growing party, hoping he seemed larger and not so fearful as he felt. "Now we are just missing SkyClan," he announced as he drew closer. His voice was drier than he'd hoped, lacking in the proud sheen he'd intended. Oh, well. "I am Rowanpaw, of RiverClan. It is nice, I suppose, to know there are other Clan cats here, even if none of us fare particularly well." His attention flickered to the odd-one-out among them, the loner. Poppy. His expression was narrow and unrecognizable as he studied her, but after a long moment, he turned his attention back to the broader group of cats, forcing a tight-lipped smile.

Harrierpaw, normally the nicest and most naïve cat you'd meet in ShadowClan, grimaced at Eveningmoon's comment on them being twins. She... Really hoped not. But she gave a polite smile soon after. "I'm sure it's only temporary..." Two of her back toes had broken and detached during a fight for her life when those Twolegs tried cutting her nails off. She gave them something to remember her by, though.
Her gaze flicked to yet another cat introducing himself to the group, the big thing being both toms baring Clan names. The mere mention of any Clan at all made Harrierpaw's shoulders feel lighter. This meant there was an even bigger chance of escaping. "Harrierpaw of ShadowClan." Normally she would greet others with more gusto, but as the day dragged on she felt more and more tired and her heart ached for the comforts of home. For Leopardsun.
Her eyes scanned each and every cat in this new circle carefully, lingering on Rowanpaw and his strange smile, before actively looking between the two new cats. "It is a relief, yea... " She couldn't stand the small talk right now, if she were beign honest. "You two wouldn't happen to know a way out, would you?"
